Episode 7 | Making a Skylight for under $60!! | Van Build

- Hey guys!
Well it’s been 3 weeks now and I’ve tested the skylight in pouring rain, gale-force winds and a heap of highway driving - not a single leak and it feels as solid as ever! I decided to make my own rather than buy one new for a few reasons, cost was definitely a factor, but I’m also not a fan of the generic “factory” look of most of the skylights out there. I love how simple the end result looks and it fits in really well with the van.

You are the only one with common sense. I have been looking for a skylight for my van and everyone I see you need to buy so much extra stuff to install a skylight and here you are showing us how to build one. Cheaper and still make it look good. Thanks for the video.
Solid as! Top marks for no screw holes through the roof skin 👏🏼
Thank you so much!! I've been wanting to do this and wishing someone would make a video about how they did it. Great job bty!
Great job!
Looking at building one for my coaster after watching this! 👌🚌👍🏻
This is awesome!!
Awesome! Keep it coming!
Well done man gonna give it a go
Brilliant and Brave fabrication! I'd love to do this using a solar panel so I can stand in and look out a low roof van and carefully bending rounded corners of roof sheet metal up so no need for drilling and caulking. I'm in Florida and don't want sun or moon light into the van.
Amazing Job! You have so much personality.
AMAZING!! Thank you so much this is such an awesome idea!!
Hey Mitch, i'm doing something similar, but with a removable plank covering it with a little gap on top so it can be blocked out from the outside during the day for the intense summer sun. Also going to build a flyscreen in for ventilation in buggy areas. Diy Beats the flimsy $800 dometic heki 2 imo
Good job!
dude another amazing video. That is so dope. I kind of want to re do the windows in my Kombi, I will see if i can do it like you did. Hopefully those supplies exist here
Hoping you see this as I have questions like the people below! This is awesome and I also want to know what other materials you used that aren’t linked? What’s the plastic?🤞🙏
I want this roof/deck too 👍
You're a legend Mitch! Cheers for that awesome DIY that Ill use for my own project mate! BTW, when you nearly fell through the roof I nearly wet my pants as that's something I would do 🤣🤟
Great questions from your viewers but..DO YOU EVER get back to any of their questions? Like, what ddi you use as the glass? plesxiglass? And what kind of glue and/or sealant did you use to seal it all in (to wood?)? Or, do you get much condensation during cold months? Does it screw up any insulation you may (or may not) have had? I'm sure ppl would appreciate any reaponses and you'd probabl;y get more followers too!
He said in the video it’s 4.5mm uv resistant Perspex
i really enjoyed this one, great work! and really inspired me, ...I wondered...
why you attached the hatch to the wood frame inside the van (sideways screws) as appose to placing it on the roof and drilling through the van roof into the frame inside ?
also was there a reason for the hinges being on the outside and will they gain rust over time ?
and finally how much did it weigh and was it heavier than expected considering it was wood ?
Hey Mitch, your videos are totally awesome ! so inspiring doing my own build now. what is the automotive adhesive you've used? Would be great to have the ref. Could find the seal and weather seal membrane but not the white silicone like adhesive. cheers!
Nice attention to detail. When it’s closed what is the pitch exactly? I am looking to do something similar but concerned about purchasing a flat window that could collect water.
Brilliant 👍👋
Boom....
Nice1 brother I thank thee 👍
Well done 👏👏👏 this is amazing. I'll definitely be making myself one following this. Thank you
Amazing video! I might do this in my conversion! What did you use to fix the acrylic window on the frame? I think you mentioned it but wasn't super clear.
bumping this question
Damn dude, I wanna buy one
what type of glass did you use? where did you get it? Im thinking of using a shower door for my skylight
thank you your the man
Isnt the saying 'fake it to you make it' ;-) looks killer mate!!
I'm interested in doing this as well, what is this amazing glue that you used?
do you go to cold places, how is the condensation on the alu frame? Also any leaks or dripping problems of any kind? I want to do the same but have been warned about drips in the night.
Cool. So what is the top made of? Plexi?
Hey Mitch!
Do you know anything about the skylight needing to have a engineer cert to be roadworthy ?
Hi Mitch, it's been a while now, how did it go with the rain? or condensation? I cant find the materials you have used on your desciption as bunning has taken some of them off. Could you please let us know what are those? :) Thankyou so much for this, i didnt know it is possible.
Great work. What is the name of the automotive "Crazy Adhesives" u used for the skylight?
Awesome video. Planning to do something similar but I will use gas struts and have the perspex extend 10cm beyond the frame to allow air flow without the rain coming in :)
Which product do you use for the crazy automotive adhesive ?
Same plan ✌🏼
Thanks brother. Now I'm off on it.
Hey just curious if this skylight ever leaked?
Can you walk on the sky light? Will it support your weight?
Update?
How’s the wood and seals and acrylic?
What automotive adhesive did you use?
How has it been holding up?
What kind of glass is this again? Something acrylic?
Did you waterproof the wood frame
Auto adhesive?
Do you have room for a solar panel?
Is the skylight glass or plastic?
Where you bought that shirt in the end
Heyo! Is it still holding up?
Great job!
It would be nice if you responded to questions though' 😊.
I wish my Ford transit had a flat roof
same here pain in the arse i installed a hatch and it took me 3 attempts to get it nice and waterproof. the glue Selley was expensive and totally crap such poor quality. Stay away from sealey!!! marine stuff whatever UV proof marketing was BS. ended up using another brand cheaper and way better.
@@romatou18 yeah I had this automotive foam that I used to level the sides and a good marine sealant still took 2 tries to make perfect but it's held up in some pretty crazy rain
Some hard wood would have been better. But look great
Ah I see plastic. Won't it scratch easily??
What’s it gonna be like 5-10 years down the line? Neglected maintenance of the frame and whoops it comes off the highway?
I like the idea but not sure about the risks here?
Exactly, YOU’RE not sure about the risks, better leave it to people more confident in their work.
$60 plus 20 hours of free labor
Thats part of the beauty of all that, isnt it after all?
$60 and $10k worth of tools 🙄
The way you don't know what things are called, it seems more like you're taking credit for other people's work 🐵 you only show yourself doing slight things, it's like the TikTok women that show themselves in slight seconds doing things
bro... that music.. ugh..
12:28, what type automotive adhesive is that?
