@@tracylowe9570 I mostly shop local or eBay. Shopping local is the most important thing you can do if you care about your town/city's health. You can't get everything though so eBay sometimes. Nice thing about buying local is you get to know the people in your town and build a nice friendly relationship. Also stop buying chinese when possible or from any county that supports slave labor.
Getting rid of Facebook was one of the best things I've ever done for myself. For the first few days I literally didn't know what to with idle time, i.e. breaks at work, sitting on the commode, etc. Once I refamiliarized myself with pooping or brushing my teeth without FB, my life improved.

That's very a clever name. Debloated software is what XDA users refer to a lot! Or GAPS free ROM. There's been a sudden surge in software that's modular in the installation interface (which is very clever also) allowing users to opt in or out of including Google software in the installation package. What would be ideal is that in the /system/app that there only purely be the minimum amount of "system applications" required to allow the phone to operate and perform the basic functions of a phone and operating system; all other non-essential Google made applications should be shifted to /data/data to allow all users the free choice to completely remove all Google related applications! There are some cavits when considering this for yourself (as I used to do upon obtaining my new phone - it wouldn't boot even once with factory firmware) that many of the Google related applications and library supporting applications tie back in and/or are so heavily embedded through links within the systemUI, framework and Java libraries that it becomes a bit of a crash test the first time you boot👍 Often there'd be some XML hidden in the public of systemUI referring to proprietary Google application (like DSP in the old days) and then your launcher crashes. It's fun figuring out what files do what when you don't even have any source files to begin with..... Samsung phones and mapping out 'here be dragons' of the innards Samsung Touchwiz! Those were the days when men were men and devices were considered guinea pigs! Only those that knew how to "roll their own" and build a 4 part recovery firmware for un-bricking their device.....they were the pioneers of early Android. And it's making me want to dust off my old Android ROM cooking stuff and rebuild a more security focused software for my phone? The issue I have is that being a Samsung excludes me from using a non-Samsung proprietary bootloader (with Knox embedded - I was one of the guys that worked on root without Knox trigger in the early days). I can't remember where I was reading about it; but I believe that there is a pixel available now where the user can use a 3rd party bootloader that allows for re-encryption?? To be fully secure I need to enable an "encryptable" boot loader in order to disable boot into download mode?
I use an app called "Package Disabler Pro". It's a couple bucks to buy but it's awesome. I've rooted my phone's in the past but anymore these days I don't want to risk bricking the phone & keeping up with the latest "you better know this before you root" info takes up too much time to stay current on. Esp when the XDA threads are 100+ pages long... Package Disabler Pro let's you disable pretty much everything you want to just like Titanium Backup does but do so without having root access. I really wish more devs would develop apps that let you bring your phone more to the side of private etc etc etc.

I've got package disabler Pro 2, however I've found it's just as easy to run a few commands via adb to uninstall the listed apps from the 0 user account. Does the same as package disabler without needing the another app. Myself these days, i think I've become accustomed to just using a hand full of apps. I've got apps I have installed for those times their required but infrequently used as well then all other apps remain as apk install files on my sdcard. All apps I've personally downloaded vetted myself, removed any and all unnecessary URLs and basically anything that is not required for the app to functiom I'll remove from the apk, repackage and sign the app. All apps I do this to. Even apps from F droid. Comment out the manifest is a good way to start. Remove all the shit you don't want listed in the manifest xml and then as the app starts to break and crap it's self I go through each fault 1 by 1 until the app functions again exactly how I want it and then use it. I keep doing that until app doesn't work with the version of firmware I'm using then i look for an upgrade or an alternative and start the process again. I once almost got caught out with an invisible premium dialler in an app on Google Play. Lucky I had my phone in aeroplane mode and adb was throwing hidden errors (suppressed errors - instead of a toast pop up it writes to a file instead) like crazy. Since then I've been sketchy as with any application. I reported that application. I did an analysis report and posted to XDA many years back

But what if maybe consume less of the the big tech giants apps and services (which I know is easier said than done because they monopolise so fast). They do afterall also need us to stay afloat, people could encourage manufactures to make products that aren't so reliant on the same ol big tech companies, by purchasing those alternatives. But idk.

I don't think you can buy a google-less phone, at least they are extremely hard to find. The most promising one for a while has been Librem 5 though, but it's availability is a bit scarce as it's release keeps getting delayed.

There is no such thing as 100%, although you can audit the code (since AOSP is open source; you can read the code directly and review it to see if it has any backdoors, before compiling it for your phone and installing it; but for phones in particular it requires some fairly extensive know-how, as opposed to PCs where it's a lot easier to ensure compatibility; since phones are all different but PCs are all more or less the same) There's also of course writing your own operating system yourself. But whether you audit the code, or make your own, there's on circumventing the possibility that you might still become a victim of direct hacking, even if you avoid the major data collection initiatives. There's also always the possibility of human error where you make an oopsie and install an app that comes with some unwanted bonuses.
Most phones have locked bootloader now. It's a pain watching XDA praying and hoping for certain phone hackers find a way without getting harassed and then quit developing.

I have been concerned about contact tracing in light of Covid-19 and seeing a policeman admitting they monitor Facebook. Deleted Facebook immediately. I don't use much digital tech and will use even less in the future. Frankly afraid of people and knowing the history of Communism and totalitarian states and how easily my people are giving up their civil rights to the government for 'safety' I'm even more so.

But obviously I'm skeptical and something tells me that going into my phone and into my google settings and turnibg off all the permissions won't actually have the effect I'm looking for - but I don't have any concrete reason to believe this other than a prejudicial distrust of Google and Samsung. Anybody know any different? Will contact tracing apps (or what have you) still collect location data even if I've told google to stop saving locations, and just generally turned off all the permissions I can for all the apps I can? At the end of the day I think whether this works or not presently, the writing's on the wall and as soon as governments and big tecg started talking about using smartphones to track the movement of individuals: we should all see where this is heading, if it's not there already. @@amoniousbt1110 they aren't supported by any providers anymore. I tried this with Verizon. Now even smartphones not at least 4g are not supported. I haven't seen a dumb phone on 4g, and even 4g will be pulled within a year or two. They're backing us into a corner. Personally, not having access to call for cops or ambulance makes me really uneasy.

signal is a scam. If you want a chat messenger that is actually secure use tox. signal requires a phone number and google play services for use. It's advertised as private yet the technology is as far from private as it gets. Tox is decentralized and requires zero personal information to use.
Yeah any app that requires phone# is completely compromised. @nixops on Twitter showed that you can easily exploit the phone# / sms process to impersonate people without their knowledge, and intercept messages to them and send responses to intercepted messages without anybody being the wiser. I think they left it as a backdoor for LEO. Scary... Idk why you can't log in with just login + pwd + TOTP 2fa, why does literally no messaging app allow that? Highly suspicious. The "Light" phone looks promising. They're coming out with a new version that has the most useful apps and basically nothing else. The original Light phone basically didn't have anything at all on it, so it was a little too 'light' for me for the price, but I think it'll be a great product in another year or two.
It's simple start with identity, get rid of or obscure that and they can't get useful info on you because they wont know who you are. Try to get a de-google'd phone but more importantly; use cell data until you get a VPN; bytzVPN. On cellular data only your carrier can spy on you.

Several years ago, I watched as my mouth dropped open when my elderly aunt held a landline phone in her hand and dialed a few relatives by memory! No numbers were stored on the phone and she didn’t have to look in a phone book.

I've been rooting my phones always for years now and look for custom roms but don't do something that u don't know about(for new people watching this). Right now i'm using rooted and degoogled phone and how sweet when u have total control of ur phone and how beautiful when ur phone is always fast, stable and secure. Great video btw!!
I received an email a few months ago mapping out EVERY place I had gone that month. I LOST MY SHIT. Suffice it to say, I removed gmail from my phone, and as much google everything as I could. I have been using duck duck go for years, and tried to limit google, so I was SHOCKED upon viewing that email, and took it as a threat. It wouldn't allow me to uncheck the button that tracked me all over the place. I WAS MORTIFIED. And then once I got rid of my gmail account on my phone, I had access to NOTHING. I had zero clue who any of my contacts were, etc, nor could I access my uploaded videos on youtube. I had to download it all back on, but as soon as I save everything differently, I will delete google again. LESSON LEARNED!!!
I've already started the process of getting rid of google permissions. Some of their apps are using your camera, connected to your contact list, your location and these are apps that it makes no sense why they would need any of those things
Right, but my concern is that turning those permissions off doesn't mean they are actually not still doing those things. Like voting, that's likely just a show.
If you think they're going to give you all these satellite services for free without a subscription service and you're just going to be able to use all their storage and all this stuff that separately would cost you $100 a month they're going to sell you ...you are the sellable piece. When I got my first smart phone, I tried to disable permissions to everything I didn't understand, but I just kept being notified that they were off. It was really annoying. Google doesn't want us to disable their spyware.

@@hendralastname3382 google can't get your identity from your contacts, as long as they are stored locally (or, in a caldav/carddav server like nextcloud, which I recommend). I have a googled and degoogled phone, one for work with spooky apps on it (teams), and the other (the degoogled one) is my personal phone. Google can get certain information about the phone using the googled one, such as if you turn on the hotspot it will know the name of the hotspot. But it cannot know any real major details about the phone like it's unique ID or anything else important. They may figure out that you own a degoogled phone, but they won't be able to figure out anything specific about it. You can't do anything about ultrasonic unless you also find a way to put it in something soundproof. But ultrasonic IIRC is short range anyway and requires specific equipment.

I haven't been able to find any carrier that will allow me to use just a phone aka flip phone. I've ketp it going for as long as I could moving to carriers that still ran networks that supported 3g and below. Us cellular phones was the last one to shut down that I know of aarp was given free phone service for elderly and disabled. Us cellular was the free service. Sadly they shut down the last system What needs to happen is that a group of people buy the out dated networks and then have groups of people to keep the system up. Idk if there enough people left that even care about privacy
I have been using a de-googled phone that I purchased from Rob for a few weeks now. For the most part the experience has been very positive. Most of what I was missing I have found a replacement for. Here are my top shortcomings: 4. Google Navigation/Waze The FOSS navigation app, OSM Maps, was quickly thrown out since it did not allow me to enter an address as the destination, I was usually limited to just a street. So I started going through the Aurora offerings. Most did not work since they were based on Google maps. Others did not work since they relied on Google Play Services to detect location. Virtually none would voice notifications, which led to COMPROMISE #1 - I had to install "Google Text To Voice" to get voice notifications from the navigation apps. This did not require the full Google Play Services and functions as a standalone app. My 4 favorite apps that I am using are 1. Magic Earth, 2. HERE WeGO, 3. GPS Navigation & Maps, 4. MapQuest - Magic Earth does it all so far. My only complaints are, I don't like the way it displays traffic and the community is so small the speed trap/police notifications are non-existent (I have yet to see one I didn't enter) - HERE WeGO displays traffic similar to how Google Navigation does it. My nits with it are NO speed trap/police notifications and in the portrait mode it only allows you to select 2 data items to display with with speed/speed limit fixed. I selected Arrival time and time to destination. I would really like also miles to destination. - GPS Navigation & Maps this by far has the best visual presentation. I like it as much or more than the Google offerings. So why is it #3? it does not mute or lower the podcasts/music when it makes voice notifications, which renders them useless. Also on a recent road trip it crashed several times. - MapQuest had the best back office. Directions routing, re-routing for traffic has been flawless. Why #4? It's visual presentation is HORRIBLE. My three key pieces of information (Arrival time, time to destination and miles to destination) is so small I could not read it without picking up the phone. Also it did not offer speed trap/police notifications. The perfect app would combine MapQuest's back office with GPS Navigation & Maps visual display. 3. Google Assistant One thing I really miss from my Google Android phone is Google Assistant, who I affectionately refer to as Agnes. I could ask her just about anything and she seemingly always had an answer. The best digital assistant I have found for Lineage OS is Hound. It performs basic operations well, but is quick to show me an internet search when the complexity increases. I will note that Microsoft's Cortana is currently available and will work on Lineage OS. I chose not to use Cortana since it is Microsoft and it will be discontinued for Android in 2021, so for now it is Hound. 2. Notifications I use Edison as my email client for Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail. Notifications work fine for these. However, Protonmail, Viber and several other apps notifications do not work. 1. Voice-to-Text ******************************************************************** SOLVED: by Ivan Patrick Lambert (see below) - Download Googles GBOARD keyboard. Hate having to install another Google APP, but this is better than typing. :) ******************************************************************** As an old man I don't type well at all on a phone. When using Google Android, I would just hit the microphone and dictate the message. I have found no viable solution for this one. I can speak into Hound then copy the text from hound to another app, but is really painful. Plus, it is annoying to hear Hound say, "searching the internet for 'Hey dear, stopping to pick up milk at the grocery store. Will be home soon.'" I have noticed some of this differs from phone to phone. The Protonmail notifications did work on de-Googled Moto G7, but not on my OnePlus 6. Your mileage may vary.

It hen would route me to the mid point of the street. Were you seeing anything like that when you entered a residential address?
Another alternative is to use a phone from Gabb Wireless. It has no internet connection, so you can't get apps, but can't be tracked or listened to either. It looks like other smart phones, has good phone service, camera, music, texting, calendar, etc. I got one for my son a year ago and now I am switching to Gabb also. One day I told my son the truck near us was a Cummins diesel and when we got home, on my computer RUclips suggested a video: Cummins vs standard diesel. That's when I decided to get rid of my phone.
Waze? I'm still using my decade old Garmin. (Highly recommend! Has voice activation, traffic updates, and you don't need to worry about getting a signal).

The custom rom scene on XDA has plenty of info... 10+ years back AOSP with no GAPPS was still a thing. Get any popular device with an unlockable bootloader and it's all fairly simple/straightforward.

The problem is that providers are ceasing to support phones that aren't 4g or above, with 5g only becoming the next push. Most flip phones and dumb phones won't be 5g.
@@deliciousficticious3150 the issue with dumb phones is that all providers have stopped activation of 3g network phones and 4g will be next within a year or two. Finding a dumb phone with 5g, which no one should want or use, is pretty much impossible. The providers are very tactfully removing our options to have a phone that isn't a smartphone.

Getting rid of Facebook was one of the best things I've ever done for myself. For the first few days I literally didn't know what to with idle time, i.e. breaks at work, sitting on the commode, etc. Once I refamiliarized myself with pooping or brushing my teeth without FB, my life improved.

This should be a genre called "clean tech".
That's very a clever name. Debloated software is what XDA users refer to a lot! Or GAPS free ROM.
There's been a sudden surge in software that's modular in the installation interface (which is very clever also) allowing users to opt in or out of including Google software in the installation package.
What would be ideal is that in the /system/app that there only purely be the minimum amount of "system applications" required to allow the phone to operate and perform the basic functions of a phone and operating system; all other non-essential Google made applications should be shifted to /data/data to allow all users the free choice to completely remove all Google related applications!
There are some cavits when considering this for yourself (as I used to do upon obtaining my new phone - it wouldn't boot even once with factory firmware) that many of the Google related applications and library supporting applications tie back in and/or are so heavily embedded through links within the systemUI, framework and Java libraries that it becomes a bit of a crash test the first time you boot👍
Often there'd be some XML hidden in the public of systemUI referring to proprietary Google application (like DSP in the old days) and then your launcher crashes. It's fun figuring out what files do what when you don't even have any source files to begin with..... Samsung phones and mapping out 'here be dragons' of the innards Samsung Touchwiz! Those were the days when men were men and devices were considered guinea pigs!
Only those that knew how to "roll their own" and build a 4 part recovery firmware for un-bricking their device.....they were the pioneers of early Android.

The issue I have is that being a Samsung excludes me from using a non-Samsung proprietary bootloader (with Knox embedded - I was one of the guys that worked on root without Knox trigger in the early days).
I can't remember where I was reading about it; but I believe that there is a pixel available now where the user can use a 3rd party bootloader that allows for re-encryption??
To be fully secure I need to enable an "encryptable" boot loader in order to disable boot into download mode?
I use an app called "Package Disabler Pro".
It's a couple bucks to buy but it's awesome.
I've rooted my phone's in the past but anymore these days I don't want to risk bricking the phone & keeping up with the latest "you better know this before you root" info takes up too much time to stay current on. Esp when the XDA threads are 100+ pages long...
Package Disabler Pro let's you disable pretty much everything you want to just like Titanium Backup does but do so without having root access.
I really wish more devs would develop apps that let you bring your phone more to the side of private etc etc etc.

I've got package disabler Pro 2, however I've found it's just as easy to run a few commands via adb to uninstall the listed apps from the 0 user account. Does the same as package disabler without needing the another app.
Myself these days, i think I've become accustomed to just using a hand full of apps. I've got apps I have installed for those times their required but infrequently used as well then all other apps remain as apk install files on my sdcard. All apps I've personally downloaded vetted myself, removed any and all unnecessary URLs and basically anything that is not required for the app to functiom I'll remove from the apk, repackage and sign the app. All apps I do this to. Even apps from F droid. Comment out the manifest is a good way to start. Remove all the shit you don't want listed in the manifest xml and then as the app starts to break and crap it's self I go through each fault 1 by 1 until the app functions again exactly how I want it and then use it. I keep doing that until app doesn't work with the version of firmware I'm using then i look for an upgrade or an alternative and start the process again.
I once almost got caught out with an invisible premium dialler in an app on Google Play. Lucky I had my phone in aeroplane mode and adb was throwing hidden errors (suppressed errors - instead of a toast pop up it writes to a file instead) like crazy. Since then I've been sketchy as with any application. I reported that application. I did an analysis report and posted to XDA many years back

I don't think you can buy a google-less phone, at least they are extremely hard to find. The most promising one for a while has been Librem 5 though, but it's availability is a bit scarce as it's release keeps getting delayed.

There is no such thing as 100%, although you can audit the code (since AOSP is open source; you can read the code directly and review it to see if it has any backdoors, before compiling it for your phone and installing it; but for phones in particular it requires some fairly extensive know-how, as opposed to PCs where it's a lot easier to ensure compatibility; since phones are all different but PCs are all more or less the same)
There's also of course writing your own operating system yourself.
But whether you audit the code, or make your own, there's on circumventing the possibility that you might still become a victim of direct hacking, even if you avoid the major data collection initiatives. There's also always the possibility of human error where you make an oopsie and install an app that comes with some unwanted bonuses.
To De-Google your phone, Its like trying to remove cancer.
Most phones have locked bootloader now. It's a pain watching XDA praying and hoping for certain phone hackers find a way without getting harassed and then quit developing.
And equally satisfying when you succeed.

I have been concerned about contact tracing in light of Covid-19 and seeing a policeman admitting they monitor Facebook. Deleted Facebook immediately. @@newfoundling9275 So modern androids to appear to give you control over what functions a given app has permission to use, and between the regular settings and enabling developer mode and messing around with those settings, it does appear like you can prohibit most apps from using GPS, bluetooth, wifi - whatever it is that would be used create contact tracing data on an individual.
But obviously I'm skeptical and something tells me that going into my phone and into my google settings and turnibg off all the permissions won't actually have the effect I'm looking for - but I don't have any concrete reason to believe this other than a prejudicial distrust of Google and Samsung.
Anybody know any different? Will contact tracing apps (or what have you) still collect location data even if I've told google to stop saving locations, and just generally turned off all the permissions I can for all the apps I can?
At the end of the day I think whether this works or not presently, the writing's on the wall and as soon as governments and big tecg started talking about using smartphones to track the movement of individuals: we should all see where this is heading, if it's not there already. Namely that the technocratic police state growing around us is going to utlize our dependence on devices to gather "evidence" that coukd potentially be used to justify sending you to a quarantine camp or whatever. It's truly a leveled up version of the East German Stazi.
And when you've got governments and a big tech corpo-borg that's willing to do that, it seems more likely that they'll give you the illusion of being able to opt out of the tracking without actually doing any such thing. But then again, such a relatively small amount of people ever take the time to dig through their google and phone settings and turn off all that privacy invasion stuff that's left on by default, that maybe just adjusting these settings actually does what it tells the user it's doing?
Regardless, I certainly like the look of the Linux phones.Well worth paying a premium in price and the learning curve if it means you won't have your device used against you by authoritarians.

I haven't seen a dumb phone on 4g, and even 4g will be pulled within a year or two. They're backing us into a corner. Personally, not having access to call for cops or ambulance makes me really uneasy.

signal is a scam. If you want a chat messenger that is actually secure use tox. signal requires a phone number and google play services for use. It's advertised as private yet the technology is as far from private as it gets. Tox is decentralized and requires zero personal information to use.

Yeah any app that requires phone# is completely compromised. @nixops on Twitter showed that you can easily exploit the phone# / sms process to impersonate people without their knowledge, and intercept messages to them and send responses to intercepted messages without anybody being the wiser. I think they left it as a backdoor for LEO. Scary... Idk why you can't log in with just login + pwd + TOTP 2fa, why does literally no messaging app allow that? Highly suspicious. The "Light" phone looks promising. They're coming out with a new version that has the most useful apps and basically nothing else. The original Light phone basically didn't have anything at all on it, so it was a little too 'light' for me for the price, but I think it'll be a great product in another year or two.

I've been rooting my phones always for years now and look for custom roms but don't do something that u don't know about(for new people watching this). Right now i'm using rooted and degoogled phone and how sweet when u have total control of ur phone and how beautiful when ur phone is always fast, stable and secure. Great video btw!!
I received an email a few months ago mapping out EVERY place I had gone that month. I LOST MY SHIT. Suffice it to say, I removed gmail from my phone, and as much google everything as I could. I have been using duck duck go for years, and tried to limit google, so I was SHOCKED upon viewing that email, and took it as a threat. It wouldn't allow me to uncheck the button that tracked me all over the place. I WAS MORTIFIED. And then once I got rid of my gmail account on my phone, I had access to NOTHING. I had zero clue who any of my contacts were, etc, nor could I access my uploaded videos on youtube. I had to download it all back on, but as soon as I save everything differently, I will delete google again. LESSON LEARNED!!!
Uncheck the button 3 times in a row to turn off Google location. They make it tricky but can be done.
They use wifi triangulation and now have upped their game with bluetooth contact tracing.

I've already started the process of getting rid of google permissions. Some of their apps are using your camera, connected to your contact list, your location and these are apps that it makes no sense why they would need any of those things

When I got my first smart phone, I tried to disable permissions to everything I didn't understand, but I just kept being notified that they were off. It was really annoying. Google doesn't want us to disable their spyware.

@@hendralastname3382 google can't get your identity from your contacts, as long as they are stored locally (or, in a caldav/carddav server like nextcloud, which I recommend). I have a googled and degoogled phone, one for work with spooky apps on it (teams), and the other (the degoogled one) is my personal phone. Google can get certain information about the phone using the googled one, such as if you turn on the hotspot it will know the name of the hotspot. But it cannot know any real major details about the phone like it's unique ID or anything else important. They may figure out that you own a degoogled phone, but they won't be able to figure out anything specific about it.
You can't do anything about ultrasonic unless you also find a way to put it in something soundproof. But ultrasonic IIRC is short range anyway and requires specific equipment.
Thank you, Rob. I have been trying to disassociate from Google recently, but was unsure how to manage most it, or if it was possible with our phones. (Androids) Going to do my best to attempt this with mine. In April, our last phone is off of service contract. And I'm so relieved to know we are able to purchase deGoogled phones as necessary. This is so weird, I think my phone knows what I’m thinking. Earlier today I was thinking about how I could get google and other stuff off my phone, I’m not at all tech savvy, so I had no idea if it’s actually possible, and then this video pops up on my suggestions! I’m going to listen to it now 👍🏼
Our brain waves go thru the phone and they get "translate" by google scary AI and then this pops up 🤟 I cant explain it clearly, but this is how it really goes....trust me or not ☺️

or if our de-Googled and Google phone are always at the same location,

The Enemies don't need phone tech to monitor you. They use the wifi fields that surround us, for total surveillance of everything and everyone within those internet fields. TOTAL surveillance! Thoughts, emotions, memories, imagination and even heart rate can be monitored AND influenced through the Internet of Everything! All of us targeted individuals can attest to that. Luckily they can't focus their malice on everyone simultaneously at this point in thr game. But I guarantee ya this: the demonic entities, the evil Deus Ex Machina of their AI supercomputers, will get it done.

Man. I glad I found this, I was about to get rid of my phone all together and how back to a flip phone.
Providers won't support dumb phones anymore. Recently they turned off 3g support, 4g is next and u have yet to see a dumb phone that's 4g, even.
Checked into that same Avenue. The new flip phone I looked at has Google!

I haven't been able to find any carrier that will allow me to use just a phone aka flip phone.
I've ketp it going for as long as I could moving to carriers that still ran networks that supported 3g and below. Us cellular phones was the last one to shut down that I know of aarp was given free phone service for elderly and disabled. Us cellular was the free service. Sadly they shut down the last system
What needs to happen is that a group of people buy the out dated networks and then have groups of people to keep the system up. Idk if there enough people left that even care about privacy

I have been using a de-googled phone that I purchased from Rob for a few weeks now. For the most part the experience has been very positive. Most of what I was missing I have found a replacement for. Here are my top shortcomings:
4. Google Navigation/Waze
The FOSS navigation app, OSM Maps, was quickly thrown out since it did not allow me to enter an address as the destination, I was usually limited to just a street. So I started going through the Aurora offerings. Most did not work since they were based on Google maps. Others did not work since they relied on Google Play Services to detect location. Virtually none would voice notifications, which led to COMPROMISE #1 - I had to install "Google Text To Voice" to get voice notifications from the navigation apps. This did not require the full Google Play Services and functions as a standalone app.
My 4 favorite apps that I am using are 1. Magic Earth, 2. HERE WeGO, 3. GPS Navigation & Maps, 4. MapQuest
- Magic Earth does it all so far. My only complaints are, I don't like the way it displays traffic and the community is so small the speed trap/police notifications are non-existent (I have yet to see one I didn't enter)
- HERE WeGO displays traffic similar to how Google Navigation does it. My nits with it are NO speed trap/police notifications and in the portrait mode it only allows you to select 2 data items to display with with speed/speed limit fixed. I selected Arrival time and time to destination. I would really like also miles to destination.
- GPS Navigation & Maps this by far has the best visual presentation. I like it as much or more than the Google offerings. So why is it #3? it does not mute or lower the podcasts/music when it makes voice notifications, which renders them useless. Also on a recent road trip it crashed several times.
- MapQuest had the best back office. Directions routing, re-routing for traffic has been flawless. Why #4? It's visual presentation is HORRIBLE. My three key pieces of information (Arrival time, time to destination and miles to destination) is so small I could not read it without picking up the phone. Also it did not offer speed trap/police notifications.
The perfect app would combine MapQuest's back office with GPS Navigation & Maps visual display.
3. Google Assistant
One thing I really miss from my Google Android phone is Google Assistant, who I affectionately refer to as Agnes. I could ask her just about anything and she seemingly always had an answer. The best digital assistant I have found for Lineage OS is Hound. It performs basic operations well, but is quick to show me an internet search when the complexity increases. I will note that Microsoft's Cortana is currently available and will work on Lineage OS. I chose not to use Cortana since it is Microsoft and it will be discontinued for Android in 2021, so for now it is Hound.
2. Notifications
I use Edison as my email client for Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail. Notifications work fine for these. However, Protonmail, Viber and several other apps notifications do not work.

As an old man I don't type well at all on a phone. When using Google Android, I would just hit the microphone and dictate the message. I have found no viable solution for this one. I can speak into Hound then copy the text from hound to another app, but is really painful. Plus, it is annoying to hear Hound say, "searching the internet for 'Hey dear, stopping to pick up milk at the grocery store. Will be home soon.'"
I have noticed some of this differs from phone to phone. The Protonmail notifications did work on de-Googled Moto G7, but not on my OnePlus 6. Your mileage may vary.
Can’t you download the gboard keyboard? I think that has the dictation build in...not sure though

@@TeddyOnRUclips My only complaint with it was when I put in some residential addresses, it would not recognize the house number. It would take city, state and street, but not a house number. It hen would route me to the mid point of the street. Were you seeing anything like that when you entered a residential address?
Another alternative is to use a phone from Gabb Wireless. It has no internet connection, so you can't get apps, but can't be tracked or listened to either. It looks like other smart phones, has good phone service, camera, music, texting, calendar, etc. I got one for my son a year ago and now I am switching to Gabb also. One day I told my son the truck near us was a Cummins diesel and when we got home, on my computer RUclips suggested a video: Cummins vs standard diesel. That's when I decided to get rid of my phone.

Waze? I'm still using my decade old Garmin. (Highly recommend! Has voice activation, traffic updates, and you don't need to worry about getting a signal).

The custom rom scene on XDA has plenty of info... 10+ years back AOSP with no GAPPS was still a thing. Get any popular device with an unlockable bootloader and it's all fairly simple/straightforward.

I own a Kyocera flip phone. Having lived most of my life without phone applications, at this point I don't NEED an app of any kind.

The problem is that providers are ceasing to support phones that aren't 4g or above, with 5g only becoming the next push. Most flip phones and dumb phones won't be 5g.

@@deliciousficticious3150 the issue with dumb phones is that all providers have stopped activation of 3g network phones and 4g will be next within a year or two. Finding a dumb phone with 5g, which no one should want or use, is pretty much impossible. The providers are very tactfully removing our options to have a phone that isn't a smartphone.
@Meddlecat verizon is telling people 4g will be phased out within 2 years.
@Meddlecat 5g is satellite based as well. They're still rolling that out, but let's deal with one human catastrophe at a time lol.
Decades ago, I was excited to track my movements and rise & fall of elevation by GPS for training. They quickly forbade self-use of the data, and forced us to allow others to do it for us. I'm excited to be able to begin again.
