    Description:
In this video, raw food chef and author Jennifer Cornbleet takes the mystery of growing your own nutritious health sprouts, one of the many techniques she writes about in her book Raw Food Made Easy for 1 or 2 People.
Sprouting involves germinating seeds so you can easily digest them. In this raw food basics video, Jennifer shows you how to grow sprouts loaded with vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and phytochemicals that you can add to your salad every day can improve your nutrition.
Jennifer begins her demonstration with a look at different types of sprouts that produce green leafy veggies, grains, legumes, and seeds. You'll find out how to mix them and which sprouts (green leafy ones) are easiest to digest.
Sprouting is the best kind of work: it's easy to do, doesn't take much time or skill, and your rewards come quickly. As you'll discover, you don't need to be a gardener or even have a yard to start sprouting.
If you've ever tried buying sprouts at a health food store, you can already imagine how much money sprouting saves. Jennifer shares her "jar method" for sprouting seeds. It's a simple process that starts with soaking your seeds and can be accomplished on your kitchen counter-top.
And as you'll discover, this is a great year-round activity because sprouts will grow at room temperature without direct sunlight.
Jennifer shows you how to turn a simple Mason jar into a "sprout farm" by simply filling it with water and seeds. After 8 to 12 hours, Jennifer demonstrates how to remove the band and lid and put a square of cheesecloth or mesh screening on top of the jar to rinse and drain the seeds.
You'll discover the trick of inverting your jar on a dish rack so the seeds continue to drain during their five days of sprouting. Then something magical happens. Jennifer shows you how to use the power of the sun to activate the chlorophyll in the pale sprouts to turn them a delectable green.
Next Jennifer shows you how to make quick work of removing the hulls from your sprouts. The only equipment needed is a medium bowl filled with water and one of Jennifer's favorite tools: the human hand. She shows you how to swish the water gently to remove the hulls and then drain off the hulls and the water in a single step.
Put the sprouts in a colander to air-dry for thirty minutes. Stored in a sealed container or jar in the refrigerator, green leafy sprouts will keep for five days and nourish you from dawn to dusk.
Sprouts are so nutritious that many people consider them a superfood. But just as importantly, they're crunchy, refreshing, and extra-satisfying when they're the result of your own work.
