I was one of those whose decision to buy a Fusion Pro was helped by your original review, so here goes: I got the Fusion Pro 2, and the staggered locking tuners and graphene string trees, are excellent for stability, this guitar does not go out of tune, unless you seriously mistreat it. It does have a distinct and unique tone, and yet always was very different from the tone yours has (of course, different amps, different, strings, different players), but I have nonetheless found it to be a very versatile guitar. It does not mimic, anything else. The sound of my Strat and Tele are a million miles away from each other, and this is similarly a million miles away from each of those. The only thing that I could wish were slightly better, are the pickups. They are fine, and function as pickups should, and do not let you down, but they lack responsiveness to some extent. Considering the price of the guitar I think this is to be expected. That said, it is very useable in terms of tone and playability, and it does inspire different playing styles. All in all mine is standing up very well, I am planing to swap out the pickups, but it's actually not a priority right now. They produce a good tone in studio conditions, so I can think of better ways to spend the money! Thanks Jonathan for the original review, it was honest and that gave me the information I needed, not hype, but realistic expectations, priceless, and much appreciated..

This is my favorite guitar now have same guitar upgrade eletronic to cts usa 5 way crl switch craft jack .hsh custom handwound pickup, custom brass bridge and block, gotoh locking tuner . Reprofile the neck to modern d and refinish the neck and fretboard with lacquer so the fretboard will look same all the time. I think all the upgrades put my guitar some weight.

I want to say thank you for posting a wonderful showcase of this guitar. Your phrasing and general playing here influenced me to work on my more melodic emotional playing because I've always been more of a metal shred guy. I brought the blue veneer with the roasted maple neck and it is my absolute favorite guitar that I own now.

Hi Jonathan. my Harley Benton Fusion Pro HSH arrived just over a week ago and I am delighted with it. So pleased that they removed that bar from the neck. I went for a red one and in my opinion it looks gorgeous, it is really well set up and almost in tune which is pretty amazing after the long journey from Germany. It's good to know that the factory take notice of reviews like yours and act upon them. Thanks.

I just modified mine as well, it is a beast now. I changed the HB to Dimarzios. I also burnished and polised the frets, adjusted the string height on the nut, adjusted the trussrod and bridge height. Also added treble bleed. This guitar is the best deal ever really. It records really well with amps sims and plays beautifully after adjustment.

Hi Jon! My HB Fusion II HSH Roasted Maple FBB arrived a week and a half ago. I really like it. I think it’s a really good deal for the price. Stainless steel frets at this price? Yes! I have one or two minor issues. The main one is the selector switch gets noisy when in the neck position or out of phase(?) position. I hope it’s just needing some electronic cleaner. It’s a keeper!

    Jonathan ,
After watching your videos I purchased a Fusion II HSH Roasted. My impression of the guitar is as follows. Body and finish are good quality. The bridge is very good and Stable. The headstock angle is too shallow and the G string is giving me a problem. I will need to add another string tree as you did. The nut was cut to high and I fixed that. I changed the wiring and added a super switch. In The middle or 3rd position the neck and bridge pickup are in parallel like a Les Paul. The middle pickup is only active is positions 2 and 5 to provide the out of phase quack. The pickups are to thin and sound too much like a Stratocaster so I ordered new pickups from Jim Wagner of JWP pickups in CA. I bought a set of Godwood humbuckers and an SR single coil for the middle position. These pickups cost more than the guitar did! I don’t mind because I have purchased other pickups from Jim that have transformed other guitars I own and gave them a new life! I’m going to install them this weekend!

Jonathan, thanks for your videos! I bought a fusion II after seeing your videos. I changed the wiring and had the nut cut deeper. The action and neck are spot on now! I installed a treble bleed RC circuit and a strat super switch. I wired it so the the middle position never sees the middle pickup by itself. Instead, the middle or 3rd position is connected to the bridge and neck pickups as in a Tele or Les Paul in either single or humbucking mode. I like those tones much better. Now I’m thinking about changing the pickups after watching your video on the pickup swap.

Really terrific playing, Jonathan. And I am sure that the Charvels, Sterlings and EVH's of this world are not happy with Hartley Benton. Especially when you are playing. I still own a 2004 Gibson Les Paul, but I hardly touch it anymore. it is a good guitar, but 4, maybe 5 times as expensive than this versatile little baby. Oh... I am a bit mystified by that big clock on your Laney Amp - what is it for?

Humbuckers are a bit mid range, but i would say you could use this guitar to play any style. Keep in mind I only use it for home use tho, don't know how it would hold up on a big stage ;D

@@JonIsJustTooLoud Those look like really nice axes. I have the lowly TE-30 BE Standard and I absolutely love it - great neck! Pickups are a weak spot and the TE-70 has the better ones. They just look classy!

Would you still reccomend this over other hb models? I really want one, but I know the shipping and import fees are going to be insane. Plus the big possibility of getting a lemon or something with a few problems that I cannot fix myself.

The shipping depends on the country you live in (for US, it's like 30-35$), this is a flat rate for up to 3 guitars. So 3 guitars -

Hi Jon, I was lucky enough to find a version 2 model used at a good price. I immediately noticed two things: first of all, something I really dislike is the fact that neck being so fat makes the guitar neck heavy and it tends to dive. In terms of tone, I found that with the stock pickups there was a distinctly nasal quality to the tone which was not easy to EQ out. That said, I was surprised to find that it was easy to get a fairly fat warm Jazz tone out of the neck pickup. I also found the neck very reactive to weather changes, necessitating frequent tweaks of the truss rod (here in the south of Spain it can vary greatly between very high temperatures during the day to considerably cooler at night), which I wasn’t expecting, given the weight and thickness of the neck.
Speaking of the truss rod adjuster itself, it’s a great design, but uses poor materials which do not stand up well to the insertion of hex keys or other steel tools into the adjustment holes. There is also a tendency for these tools to pass right through two holes at once and dig into the body beneath the adjuster - not good!
On the positive side though this adjuster design makes it far easier to adjust neck relief on the fly than the typical Fender or Gibson adjusters, which are located at the base of the headstock.
I’m really not sure how much I like the neck. I don’t seem to really be able to get comfortable with the profile, because my hand always seems to detect a sort of sharp angle behind the neck. The stainless frets and the almost flat fretboard camber however feel great.
The tremolo tailpiece lacks something for me - it could be more responsive to the touch.
It came strung with really heavy gauge strings - with a wound 3rd, and it would not stay in tune.
I discovered that the neck screws were loose, and after tightening them and going to a lighter string gauge, the guitar was transformed and never goes out of tune.
That said, I am beginning to want to try a heavier gauge than the 008”s I have on there now, and I am tempted to try 011”s which feel better for Jazz.
Overall, this is a very versatile and lightweight instrument which has really good sustain.
If I were going to change anything it would be the pickups and pots, which feel crunchy even when sprayed with contact lubricant.
For the money I paid, it would be impossible to beat, and it was my go to guitar until I started to find the strings too light, but I wanted to keep those on there for legato playing.
The finish is really pretty, but the hardware doesn’t wear well - the bridge and truss rod adjuster both already look worn. The finish seems a little vulnerable - easy to nick or scratch.
Lastly, I think a metal neck plate would have been better, since the screw holes are easily damaged and spoil the finish, because the lacquer tends to crack all the way to the neck joint if the screws are overtightened.
