    During my first year of university, I had a bottle of absinthe that was almost entirely a party piece (I wasn't a big drinker at all). It came in a fancy bottle, and everyone enjoyed showing it to their friends for exactly the reasons to you mentioned, as well as to enjoy their colourful reactions to the taste. This bottle lived on a table along with the rest of the flat's alcohol, and one fateful night, while a party was in full swing I saw a very drunk girl pick up the bottle and uncork it. Being far too drunk to realise what it was, or notice the taste, she downed a good third of the bottle before I was able to reach her and wrestle it away from her. She managed to make it five steps before collapsing, vomiting and passing out, spectacularly hitting her head on the way down. I got rid of the bottle of absinthe very soon after that. Some powers were not meant for mortal men to meddle with, and the stupidity of drunks should never be underestimated XD

    Pastis is not Absinth but both contain anise.
    Original Absinth (from the french jura mountains) is a very complex beverage in terms of ingredients and production. Its just that many producers use cheaper ingredients and alcohol to jump on that fashion for profit. Likewise it is not a "cocktail" for ordinary bars but requires a certain atmosphere/mood to experience its nature and complexity.

    Pernod misses the deep charackter of Absinth. As an Absinthe drinker I feel sorry for you not getting to taste 100% Natural Chechz Absinth. Also it tastes rather sweet with moderately strong Anis notes than bitter.

    • @mariusdire
      @mariusdire 5 лет назад +12

      Except the Czech Republic had no history of Absinthe until very recently and most of that stuff if poorly macerated. If you want absinthe that's close to the belle epoche drink I'd recommend Vieux Pontarlier, they use herbs from the Pontarlier region of France (where the best absinthe came from during the Belle Epoche) and one of the original alembic stills.

    • @brandonofviolet
      @brandonofviolet 5 лет назад +11

      Yea. I’d definitely recommend some Swiss or French absinthe over Chech. If you are on a budget Kübler is some pretty good stuff.

    • @thibaultwyrsch6888
      @thibaultwyrsch6888 5 лет назад +5

      Definitely! Go for swiss absinthe and please don't use a sugar cube... We usually drink it without in the region it's from. And one thing they should have done in the video is add some ice in the absinthe fountain.... Always go for nice and cold water (we used to have some bottles hidden close to the fountains for a quick absinthe in the region of Neuchatel).
      The Kübler is a good recommendation if you wanna go cheap but if you can, I would personnally recommend Absinthe Le Chat by Willy Bovet, which is one of my favourite

    • @Thryller42
      @Thryller42 5 лет назад +3

      I second this. Czech Absinthe is nothing like the french, swiss (or even good german) stuff. It´s sweet and always has anise in it. "Real" Absinthe should have no sugar added to it - it´s actually a bitter - and it doesnt need to have anise (thats why some Absithes don´t get cloudy when you add cold water). You guys should really try a Pontarlier. @mariusdire is definitely right about this! And the swiss "la bleue"? Nothing for starters imho but if you are into Absinthe get one.

    • @sifuculreif6448
      @sifuculreif6448 5 лет назад +3

      There are literally hundreds of different Absinthe recipes. Even if you stick to a single, strict recipe, different batches will vary in flavor, strength and color (as with any liqueur) depending on the weather, the growing seasons for the herbs, and even how long it's been in the bottle.
      It's as varied as wine, basically.

    I love absinthe. Often times when I have someone ordered Sambuca up, I try to get them to try a traditional absinthe cocktail. At least 3 of the regulars have switched from licorice to anise.

    It was used to make bathtub laudanum more palatable and that is why peeps were tripping balls and it was made illegal. And, in case you're wondering why absinthe specifically was used, it was because of its very very strong anise (among others) flavor that worked very effectively to mask the putrid flavor of the black market laudanum. And yes, that stuff was taken orally, nobody was mainlining it in the 1800.

    Very good video. I absolutely agree that presentation of a spirit contributes to its overall experience. I believe that some of the mythology surrounding absinthe is a little founded in science. Your body absorbs water and glucose (sugar water "loosh") almost instantly, these are binded with the alcohol which can contribute to an instant drunk effect! At least that's how it was explained to me... More of the presentation probably.

    • @Ezox2408
      @Ezox2408 5 лет назад

      not really.... but yes your body absorbs the glucose rather quickly, and then the alcohol only takes a little longer than that. so the combination of a rise in blood sugar levels and a rise in blood alcohol content could help create this 'instant drunk' effect, but there are no protein pumps for both sugar and alcohol, and glucose is a fairly neutral molecule so wouldn't react with a stable one such as alcohol.

    • @wittfox
      @wittfox 5 лет назад +11

      @@Shooteronly If you burn the sugar cube, you can give it a caramel, smoky flavor tint. To be honest though it does not usually break through the strong fennel and anise flavors. Also, depending on taste, a good dilution with water is about 50/50. Not to mention, you can pour the absinthe into the glass over the sugar cubes which enables them to be burned from the alcohol content before Ice cold water is added to gain the louche. It really makes very little difference in my opinion.

    • @Shooteronly

      No offense to the makers of this video, but, I am with you 100%. I've been enjoying absinthe for several years. I'm no expert, but, sadly, this video should never have been made. I suppose the makers were just having a bit of fun. They completely miss the effects of Thujone. Even after several years, I've never had more than two absinthes in one evening, so I really don't know the effects of overindulging, and I am not interested in finding out. The effects of a moderate amount are actually quite subtle, but very different from other drinks. In fact, I find that the effects are overwhelmed if I drink some other alcoholic beverage, either before or after. Absinthe does put a person in a contemplative mood, and makes for very interesting conversation. The Thujone acts on GABA receptors.
      I think the burning of the sugar cube was mainly practiced in areas near the Czech Republic and has been observed to a limited extent elsewhere. The only Bohemian absinthe that I've had was Mata Hari, which tastes more like Compari than the French absinthes I've had, so maybe burning the cube works better with that flavor profile. I don't add sugar at all.
      For people who really want to know more about absinthe, check out a video called "History of Absinthe." You will understand a lot more than you got from this video.

    • @brandonofviolet
      @brandonofviolet 5 лет назад +2

      Alright buddy. Traditional absinthe is not consumed with a ignited sugar cube. That is a Czech Republic thing. In French and Swiss service you use one of these , an Absinthe Fountain,
      * www.frontgate.com/traditional-absinthe-collection/1198711?listIndex=0&offers_sku=162407&SourceCode=ZZ51120&intlShippingCtx=US%7CUSD&CATARGETID=120245420002086760&cadevice=m&gclid=CjwKCAiAiuTfBRAaEiwA4itUqMPUDpQvqTbrOQenycHpR0g2vy4jytThW9V-1udQ0OqJ_iRePIY2PxoCcv4QAvD_BwE *
      And slowly drip water on top of a sugar cube to help take the bitterness from the absinthe down and to also dilute it. Or you can just drink the absinthe straight up, or just dilute without any sugar cube if you like the bitterness. I’ve worked at a bar in Austin that does Absinthe service and has a decent selection of imported Absinthe. Idk what the man said that wasn’t true about Absinthe?

    Never believe those who say that absinthe must be diluted. The sensation of pure absinthe is one of the greatest feelings there are. The rich smell, the sharp taste, the unparalleled WARMTH coming down your throat and settling down in your stomach. And then the aftertaste kicks in, and it feels like being a small child being tucked in a warm bed.
    Just drink it cold in shots. Rinse with water in a couple minutes, if the stuff is on the bitter side. But don't go any fancier, you'll miss the journey.

    hey guys thanks for making this video, i love the stuff too (i'm even drinking it right now, and was before i saw this video released). however, there does need to be a clarification, it's not the sugar that makes it cloudy, just cold water, it's a reaction with the ingredients, and it's known as "the louche". further adendum to that point, to serve it with water is also, to louche it. and all that being said, i'm going to keep a link to this video very handy to send to people when they freakout when i say "i'm drinking absinthe".

    the mild hallucinations are caused because thujone is a gaba agonist and alcohol is an antagonist so what youre doing is youre able to get the other effects of the alcohol while minimizing gaba effects and you can drink a lot more which ends with you being more awake when youre hammered. youre not hallucinating from the abisnthe but you might from the absinthe. likewise absinthe is like 85 alcohol. also copper salts are not bath salts bath salts are synthetic khat which is an african bush that contains an amphetamine analogue. likewise people also used to put other drugs primarily opium into the absinthe and people used to take nitrous while drinking laudenum and absinthe which then absolutely does result in vivid hallucinations

    Another fun still tale. From a friend of a friend.. Boiled off some ~85% gear (distilled ethanol). Bought some absinthe extract (shaman australis). Was awful with regular 40% vodka. But added enough to the superhootch to saturate (oil just visible on the surface). Batch prepared, did the whole sugar water milky bit. Very definitely psychoactive. Not axe murdury, but a distinct floating feeling, your not walking, but drifting. Quite like a small dose of ketamine. Very pleasant, if you like that kinda thing. But you need very strong hooch to get it in to ya. Pernod just isnt enough. N... my friend... knows his still, and what 3 shots gives. N the wormwood definitely added a something extra. Maybe its the carrier, maybe its the spike in blood alcohol that can carry the oils to the blood brain barrier. Maybe its the solubility in the source that is released with the sugar. I dunno. But i bet you Van Gough wasnt drinking govt taxed 37% stuff. I also recon he could handle his booze. What is marketed as "absinthe" today is definitely not what was drunk at the time.

      Sidhe I had always heard it was grape farmers/wine makers who lobbied to outlaw it. The story goes there was a blight one year that lead to super low yields and thus higher prices for wine. The poorer wine drinkers couldn't afford it so they went to absinthe which was already somewhat popular amongst certain artsy groups, but when grape harvests returned to normal, they didn't go back to purchasing wine. In an effort to get their customers back, wine makers started a smear campaign against absinthe and had it made it illegal. Quite similar to the Hearst story about making cannabis illegal.

    If you get a proper absinthe glass, you don't need to measure. They often come with a reservoir in the bottom, or are at least marked in some way. Just fill up the reservoir or to the line and you're good to go.
    Dripping water through a sugar cube is the genuine, traditional method. The method where you soak the sugar cube in absinthe and then set it on fire is an "edgy" method devised when the stuff was largely illegal, and ends up imparting a slight burnt sugar taste to the end product.

    When I was in the bar business in Waco around 2002??, I might have ordered ten bottles a month for 13 months from someone in either NV or AZ. The stuff I ordered, I think, was made in Switzerland with thujone and shipped as a clear (not green) liquid across the Swiss border into France and shipped from there. I don't know why this was the case, but it had to do with looking unlike absinthe. It was expensive, about $200 per bottle, because of the lower alcohol content and higher thujone content. I don't drink anymore for health reasons, but I think about the green fairy often :)
