  • In today's video, we have a go at REPOTTING AN ASPARAGUS FERN - we discuss all of their care needs so that you can make your Asparagus Fern thrive!
    I've got 2 Asparagus ferns:
    -Asparagus Setaceus
    -Asparagus Nanus (more likely to be Asparagus Densiflorus)
    We look closely at them and I compare my experience growing these ferns (which aren't ferns at all, neither are they related to Asparagus!) with their recommended care needs.
    Please note: After further research, I think the Asparagus Nanus is mislabeled. It looks more like one of the Asparagus Densiflorus varieties.

    It is ironic that you are repotting your Asparagus Fern as I had to do the same thing for my mum's fern (which I have inherited) last weekend. Unlike you, I had to wear gloves as the fern is a huge one with loads of "branches" and established thorns. It was heavily potbound. I also had to cut it out of there. Did you know that the Asparagus Fern is very entertaining when it is producing new "branches"? It will continuously move those new branches back and forth and up and down until it settles and this movement of the branches can change many times within an hour - look out for this when your fern produces new "branches" it is quite intriguing. Oh, and I call that tray a potting tray - well it's what Monty Don called his :)

      I can't say I've noticed the new branch thing - I'll keep an eye out for it. I love anything that's a bit unusual! Thanks for the tip! And potting tray sounds good to me. 😁

      I have an asparagus fern and it is very leggy (2 ft long). do you know how to prune to make bushier.

      I was going to break up the root 🤪 I thought I heard someone say you should break up the root. I’m so glad I watched this as I’m so sensitive. You probably saved my life. I can’t even spray the citronella plant with out wheezing

      Excellent! Although I'm sure you've already been informed a gazillion times that it's not actually a fern? Makes no difference to me though - it sure adds to a fern display and is very easy to grow.

    Hi love your videos. I’m going to get a green house for tropical and semitropical plants. Can you do a video on your green house itself? Construction, materials, heating etc?

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  4 года назад

      Glad you're enjoying them Gordon. I'll definitely bear that in mind. But in the meantime, this playlist might help you with the heating aspects: ruclips.net/video/VLW87h86JxI/видео.html
      And as for the greenhouse itself, it's a 'Rhino' greenhouse manufactured and sold by this company: www.greenhousesdirect.co.uk. I hope that helps! 😀

      Thanks, have you also used a bubble wrap material on the inside. I assume it helps with temperature control? I thought at first it would cut down light too much but obviously not as you are very successful with your plants etc.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  4 года назад

      Yes it's fully bubble-wrapped. In my location it would be impossible to grow without it - just too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. Here's a video all about it: ruclips.net/video/JL9gI9F0-7k/видео.html
      Regarding the light, this is horticultural bubble warpu which is pretty good at letting light through.

    Hi and thank you for recording your process and helping us along the way! I'm in a predicament because Im repoting my sprengeri (it's 4x times the size of yours so it's pretty big) and it's very root also. I have begun gently picking away and untangling the rhizomes roots but I don't know what to do to be honest haha! How's your plant doing now, should I repot it without disturbing the roots? Because from what I know it's usually best to loosen the rootball so it can thrive and have room to grow etc. Please share your input?! I going crazy over here :')

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  Год назад

      To be honest they’re tough as old boots! Just divide the root ball with a sharp knife - don’t worry about root disturbance. Providing each section has some of the thick roots they’ll be fine potted up into new media. Good luck.

    My fern is huge and very root bound. Feels like concrete! Should I score the roots when I repot?

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  4 года назад +2

      I would cut it into sections with either a hack saw or sharp knife - making sure each section has growths on it, and pot them up again separately. That way you'll get some free plants and give them room to rejuvenate. Good luck!

    I winter mine over in the winter and because it sheds worse than my cat I swear I’ll never do it but if they get mature they flower and produce fruits...what we do for our plants right?

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  4 года назад

      Yeah I'm finding that out myself, Kathy! At least for me it's in the greenhouse so I don't mind a few bits and bobs on the floor but I couldn't stand it in the house. I'm hoping for some of these red berries though one day. They look really nice.

    Why not loosen the roots first before repotting?

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  Год назад

      Do you think that would benefit such a vigorous growing plant in some way?

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 I am not an expert and thus why I was asking.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  Год назад

      @Cheryl Brown Me neither - just an enthusiastic amateur. That's the one and only time I've ever repotted an asparagus fern. I would perhaps loosen them with a fibrous rooted plant, but on these the roots are like concrete - as you can see - loosening them would be practically impossible with fingers, and would serve no purpose as they're so vigorous anyway. That's just my opinion - I could be wrong.

    They don't produce spores. Thats why mostly they are not ferns i guess.
