I picked up a dirt cheap folding bike to see what all the fuss was about. It had broken/missing parts, a lot of rust, and a seat post that was far too short for me… but it gave me the most fun ride I’ve had in years! I can see why some people become so obsessed with these things. Stay until the end for my personal pros and cons of these unusual bikes.

You're cool my friend, respect to you from Italy. Ps. Consider turning the handlebar upsode down from how you keep it, but that's your decision 😌🙌

Great bike, great video, many thanks for posting this; although your seat does looks a little bit too low to me.
It never usually takes Cyclists very long to find a decent cafe or country pub, so I am pleased and reassured that you continue to uphold that tradition! 🚴‍♀️

Thank you! And yes, it was painfully low. The first thing I did when I got home was order a longer one!

Just bought an old Dahon. Looking forward to some lovely outings like the one you have shared with us. Cheers from Canada

Thanks. I love my old Dahon - it can take a beating and just keeps going. I hope you'll post videos of your adventures - I haven't been to Canada in years but I've never forgotten how beautiful the landscape is.

They are great! The folding bikes are very underated, especially the cheap ones. Mine looks a lot like yours.

They are so much fun! The only drawback with this one is the weight - almost 16kg - but I'm looking at ways to reduce that. My other folder is less than 11kg and it feels light as a feather

Cheers. Watching @hobocyclist was part of the reason I decided to try a folding bike, and it was certainly worth it

The big difference between a cheap heavy folder and a quality light one is EFFICIENCY.
Especially on steep HILLS. I have both. A Careera intercity. That weighs around 31lbs. And a Tern Verge X11 that weighs 22lbs.
The difference is if I ride the intercity on my 7 mile commute that is 85% uphill grade. I feel half dead by the time I get there 40 minutes or so later. On the X11 its so much easier. And faster. And I will cover the same distance in often less than 30 minutes. That thing climbs hills like they dont exist. And is a joy to ride. I have to kill myself to get the intercity over 22mph on the flat. The X11 can break 25mph like its nothing.
    The difference in price.
    Careera intercity=£400
    Tern Verge X11=£2400..
And the Tern Verge X11 is a work of art to look at. Nobody compliments the intercity. But ive had many people saying that is a nice looking bike about the X11..
The difference in quality is night and day. If you spin the front wheel on the intercity. It will spin for 2 minutes. If you spin the front wheel on X11 it will spin for 12 minutes..

I totally agree. This bike weighs approx 33lbs, whereas my Dahon is 21lbs. The Dahon gets far more use in general but this one is great for wet/icy conditions as it grips the roads far better. I live in an area that is pretty much flat so neither have been properly tested on hills (yet)

Looking at getting a couple for me and the mrs. Put them in boot of car, drive out somewhere then unfold bikes and go for a spin
Places like kielder water for example 👍🏻

That sounds like an amazing idea (and a great location). I got my first two folding bikes secondhand online for less than £50 each and they've never let me down, despite being hammered by off-road trails and covering 100s of miles

I purchased an unbranded folding bike from either Ebay or Amazon close to 12 years ago and that bike is still going strong to this day.

I'm amazed how resilient they are - this old bike has survived multiple camping trips and is used daily by my kids and is still going strong.
