Wow, cheers to the stenographer! I had never heard this information before. As someone who transcribes audio for work, I can't imagine how difficult it must have been to do that 1) live, and 2) by hand! Aw, that poor, nameless soul worked SO hard. Well, Jesus watched every minute of that person's efforts and will grant them their proper reward on that Day.
Spurgeon was only a year older than I am now. This is why I don't read many biographies. I already feel like a failure. Reading this stuff just depresses me more.

Pastor Matt, thank you so much for your RUclips ministry and content!! Most days, I look forward to seeing a video from you, and I'm never disappointed in the content. According to your advice in a video you posted years ago, I decided to pick a dead mentor in the faith. Over the past three years, I've been wrestling and asking God about who I should study and my heart has been stirred recently to study Charles Spurgeon. So, I've been purchasing and reading every book about him and those he wrote, when I have free time from my Seminary readings. This video came at such a good time!

I looked at coming to seminary at RPTS and even spoke with them on the phone a few times. I wish they had an all-online option. I know you lose out on a lot when unable to attend in person, but as a 34 year old husband and father of 3, it's not feasible for me at the moment. With the rise in the necessity of bi-vocational pastors and ministers, I wish more places would add the option for full online MDiv's. I live in the Akron area, so I plan to come visit one Lord's Day!

I'm grateful for men like Spurgeon, and the work they do. I am not wired that way. I love serving the Lord, and the church but I'm not a preacher, or public speaker of any account. Still my ministry, quiet and unassuming as it may be, requires it's own effort, skill and talent God did wire into me. I never think I'm doing enough, and I've come to know many, if not most, well known pastors who have done what seems like so much more than I, often feel the same.

Spurgeon is one of my heroes of the faith. 😊 Sadly he may have died prematurely in part because he burned himself out working so hard. As I once heard Don Carson say, (paraphrasing because I can't remember his exact words), sometimes it might be better not to go 100% in pastoral ministry (or at least for some seasons) if it means one can have many more productive years of service. Say, going at 80% for 20+ years rather than 110% and burn out after 10 years.

1:20 the reason why so many people last year registered and then didn’t show up is because the registration is free. People do not value what they get for free. Easy come easy go. It’s easy to register for some thing that cost them nothing and then on the day say “ehh, I don’t feel like it”. it’s been shown that if you have two products that are exactly identical and one is $5 and the other is $15 they will sell more of the one that’s $15 because it has a perceived greater value. So if you’re gonna put on a conference where registration is free, you will always have lots of people who register and then don’t show up. The only way to resolve that is to make them pay. even if it is a small amount. When money come out of their bank account, if they have to make a financial commitment to it, they will show up.

The claim that, even though you didn't mentioned him by name, respecting and loving an amazing pastor for his preaching and dedication to the word of God amounts to "idolizing" him is misguided. That's pure Monday morning quarterbacking as well as caving in to slack-brained popular opinions. You were, and still are, in the same category in my mind as the not-mentioned-by-name fallen preacher. That doesn't mean that I'm idolizing you...or John MacArthur, James White, Douglas Wilson, or anyone. Rather it means that I love you for your dedication to preaching of the word of God and overall Christian integrity. Thus when ***BOOM*** such a pastor falls in shameful sin, it's simply dishonest to play the "you were idolizing him" card after the fact. Let's be careful not to be sucked in by sloppy popular thinking and kneejerk reactions. Peace, brother. We love you!

Psalm 33: "Praise the Lord with the harp. Make music to Him on the ten stringed lyre .. play skillfully .." When commenting on this Spurgeon said the instuments were "childish things" and "when Jesus gives us spiritual manhood, we can make melody without strings." ... Spurgeon fails to consider that it was the Spirit of Christ that co-wrote Psalm 33 (and many other Psalms that call for the playing of instruments)

Please excuse my vague attempt at addressing Mr. Everhard. As a 20 year veteran of full time church ministry, I think he is towing a line that should be drawn out more. I do think this budding generation has an issue with grit and work ethic, so I understand the importance to stress of hard work. Spurgeon is a a high bar….but he also suffered with crippling anxiety and depression. Perhaps he needed to unwind a bit:) I am an introvert and spend my life ministering to people. I love it, but it drains me. For my own mental and emotional well being, I have found it life-giving to wrench on old trucks. In ministry there is always more to do. You rarely finish anything. Being able to complete something silly like welding up a new bumper helps me recharge and shepherd my flock more effectively. Can I focus too much on cars, yes! Easily! Like enjoying a fine bourbon, one must approach it in moderation. There are two sides to this, and I feel as though only one was addressed. Many young ministers in my presbytery unwind in Tolkien, Lewis and the like…Wonderful! However, some of them think their unwinding is more pious than mine as it’s more “godly” and ministry focused…I strongly disagree! Just my $0.02 from a fellow minister of the gospel…

“Spurgeon did it” so a frail human being does something that common sense says, “is not good for the human body” therefore it’s okay to do? Cigar smoking is the equivalent to cigarette smoking. Smoking cigars actually increases the risk of dying from oral or throat cancer because it has a higher cancer causing substance. I’ll stick with the apostle James, Therefore to him that knows to do good (not smoking), and does it not, to HIM it is sin! Maybe Spurgeon did not understand the horrible health benefits of smoking, but we that are alive in the 21st century certainly does.
