    This is a quick video on the procedure for Honda Mini Trail clutch adjustments. Many of the older Honda small bikes were automatic clutches, meaning that you gear shifter is what engaged the clutch instead of a hand lever on the handlebars. This will cover Honda QA50, Z50, CRF50, XR50,C70, CT70, CL70, CRF70, XR70, ATC70, CT90, CL90, CT110
    THE PROCEDURE:
    WITH IT RUNNING - With the bike idling, put it in first gear, you of course need to have the brake on. Turn the screw counterclockwise slowly, once you start feeling the bike try to grab and start pulling. This is a very slight pull. Turn the screw back in 1/16 to an 1/8 turn. Hold the screw in place while you lock down the lock nut.
    WITH THE ENGINE OFF - Turn the screw counterclockwise slowly. You should be feeling the screw turn easy with no restriction. As soon as you feel the screw have some resistance, stop turning. Now turn the screw in 1/8 of a turn. Keep screw in place while tightening the locknut.
    rodsshop.org/get/cms-honda/
    The Honda CT70 in this video was revived from sitting, stored away for over 12 years. It needs a complete overhaul and the clutch disc are near their end of life. However, the procedure that is shown in this video is exactly how you adjust these type clutches on the Honda Mini Trails.
    I think some of the other manufacturers such as Yamaha and Kawasaki also use a similar type clutch. If you have run across this with other brand bikes, please leave a comment and I will add this to the description to help other folks out with this as well.
    You will see that there are two methods I use to adjust the automatic clutch. One is with it running and the other is with it off. Either method works fine for getting you to a base start. I recommend after making this initial adjustment, to ride it and ensure it is shifting the way you want it. You can tweak your adjustment by turning the screw very little in between test rides. If you feel the clutch is not engaging fully and makes shifts hard, you can turn the screw between 1/32 to 1/16 counterclockwise. If you feel the clutch is slipping, turn it the same but clockwise.

      I believe you have to remove the side cover of the engine. Let me get into my book, I might scan part of it but this is gong to be better if you contact me on my site so I can email you the instructions and any pictures. Just be sure to reference this conversation on my contact form so I know who you are.

      Did you try the second method where the engine isn't running? With the engine off, turn the screw in clockwise one to two turns. Then back it out (counterclockwise) slowly and gently. You are trying to feel resistance on the screw. Once you feel a little resistance, kind of mark where the screw is, then turn it out a little more to see if it feel like it is bound or going to stop. Watch the video at 4:40 and see how I did it.
      Is you clutch not working at all?

    Hello my brother mini bike lover, useing my wifes email,i have restored a ct70 and got it all finished and i have no 2nd or 3rd gear, do you think its my clutch adjustment causeing this?

    • @RodsshopOrg
      @RodsshopOrg  2 года назад

      I don't think so, it sounds more like the arm that actuates the gearshift drum. That or you didn't get the pins put back in the drum. It is also possible that you didn't get the gearshift actuator arm in the correct place. Did you tear this engine all the way down. If not, you can pull the clutch side cover off and see if it is aligned or put together correctly. Contact me through my site, there you can send me pics and I can help you a lot better than through comments on RUclips. rodsshop.org/contact/

      IF I have this correct, you can break the nut loose but the adjuster screw is staying still? Sounds like someone tightened that screw down. It is OK. to force to unscrew. However let me ask you this before you do that. With the lock nut tightened, is the adjuster screw sticking out of the nut or is it down inside a little. I ask because someone could have tried to back it out all the way and it could be locked that direction. If so, then force it to screw in. Maybe you should contact me through my site and send me pictures so I can guide you a little better. rodsshop.org/contact/

    Turning that "clutch adjusting" screw has NO affect on clutch ENGAGING BUT making it too tight can cause the clutch to SLIP…. Can you explain when you turn counter clockwise which lets all the FreePlay out, the bike lurches forward?? Mine does not do that

    • @RodsshopOrg
      @RodsshopOrg  2 года назад

      Turn the screw about half way out from being all the way in too tight. Start the bike, with the bike in neutral. Press the lever down into first but keep it held down. Do not put it in fist and let up. Push it into first and keep it all the way down. Start screwing the screw in, when you feel the bike try to ever so slightly pull, then back the screw out about an 1/8" of a turn.

    • @RodsshopOrg
      @RodsshopOrg  2 года назад

      OMG, I need to go on a vacation. I told you backwards and hit the reply before I corrected myself. It is exactly what I said, but turn the screw out, counter clockwise. Once you feel the bike start to grab ever so slightly, screw the screw in about an 1/8". This is all the while the shifter lever is pushed all the way down.

    • @RodsshopOrg
      @RodsshopOrg  2 года назад

      Also, I was quoting another bike, on this Honda mini-trail, just put in in first and leave the shift lever alone, don't hold it down. Also, if you are having trouble with it trying to adjust it running, go to the video at 4:50 and adjust it with the engine off. That way work just as good. However sometime once you find that spot, you have to turn the screw one direction or the other no more than an 1/8 of a turn to get it to shift smoother in between gears.

    • @benjaminsalopek3394
      @benjaminsalopek3394 2 года назад

      @@RodsshopOrg that’s the problem. The bike does not grab even if I turn the screw all the way out counterclockwise as far as it’ll go. I know you’re only supposed to go until you feel resistance and at that point the bike does not lunge forward either not even a tad!!
      So you’re saying hold the shifter down and first do not let up?? Because I was doing it letting up. So hold it down and do not let up and when I turn the screw counterclockwise and keep going, you’re saying the bike should to start to move at the resistance point?? Without any throttle at all?

    • @RodsshopOrg
      @RodsshopOrg  2 года назад

      I got myself confused trying to answer you, I just was working on a Yamaha small bike and it was a little different than your Honda. Follow my instructions in the video description. You can do it two ways, either running or not running. If you are doing it running, put it in first gear, DO NOT hold the lever down, turn the screw out, counterclockwise until you feel a ever so light pull. Then turn it in an 1/8 of a turn. Or with it not running. Turn the screw counterclockwise. It should feel fairly easy to tun, but will soon get to a point you feel some resistance. As soon as you feel some resistance, stop, then turn it in, clockwise about an 1/8 of a turn.

  • @benjaminsalopek3394
    @benjaminsalopek3394 2 года назад

    When you’re doing this running, is the bike in first gear or the bike in neutral??

    • @benjaminsalopek3394

      @@RodsshopOrg I’m not understanding. So you start off in neutral and at this point are you turning the screw counterclockwise until you have resistance and the bike moves?? Or at what point do you put bike in first?? Doesn’t make too much sense.

    • @RodsshopOrg
      @RodsshopOrg  2 года назад

      @@benjaminsalopek3394 If the bike is sitting there idling in neutral. Push the gearshift lever down and hold it down. That puts it in first, but holding it down also engages the clutch. As you adjust the screw turning in counter clockwise, once you start to feel the bike start to pull, turn the screw clockwise about an 1/8 of a turn.

      @@benjaminsalopek3394 I think why they don't suggest adjusting while it is running is because some oil will leak out. But it is so little and it shouldn't take you that long, it won't hurt anything. But manufacturers are extra careful.

    i think you are making it a lot more difficult than it needs to be .... you are actually dealing with two functions at the same time if you try to do it with the motor running when the motor transisions from a low idle to a slightly higher idle the weights in the clutch swing out and start to engage so unless the idle is set perfect that grabbing feeling you talk about might be caused by the centerfical weights

    Sorry dude, but you're clueless on how this semi-automatic centrifugal clutch works and how to properly adjust it.

    • @RodsshopOrg
      @RodsshopOrg  2 года назад +4

      SORRY DUDE, but been doing it for 45 years and this always has worked. And it was in a Honda Tech book is where I first learned you could adjust it running. Maybe you don't understand how it works or you wouldn't be making a stupid comment!!!
      I can break it down for you though so you can learn something. Using principles of centrifugal force, the auto clutch automatically engages and disengages the clutch based on engine rpm. However, the centrifugal force is bypassed with a hydraulic release inside the clutch pack. This valve is located in the center of the clutch pack. Both the 3 speed automatic Honda and the 4 speed Manual shift Honda uses this. Whenever the clutch lever is pushed all the way down, the lever inside the engine presses this valve. The screw on the side adjust how much the clutch is engaged or disengaged. SO SORRY DUDE, LOOK LIKE YOU DON'T KNOW SO MUCH AFTER ALL!!!!
