I had one of those in 1970 when I was 10 years old. I’ve had minibikes before… but my CT 70 was my first real motorcycle. I’ve had a lot of bikes since then, and my CT 70 is still my favorite!
Lucky you! In 1970 there must have been five or six of these bikes on our street alone.. My parents wrote the book on being anti dirt bike. Wouldn’t even consider it….
First bike I ever had, my grandfather bought me and my brother and cousins one for each was the best fun ever as 9 and 10 year old kids. Great memories with all of us riding together on my cousins farm in upstate New York
This brings joy to my heart. I had a ct70 and drove it night and day all through my teens. Had it on road and off road. beaches, dirt pits, fishing. You name it. Tough little dependable piece of history.
Got a used CT70 in about 1975 when I was 13 years old. First girlfriend I had lived 4 miles away up the same state route I lived on, with our town in between. For a year when I didn't have a drivers license yet, I would ride the 70 about 150 yards up to the first cross road and take back roads for about 8 miles up to the closest crossroad abut a half mile from her house, and brave the state route for that last minute to her house. There was a long hill back the holler around the corner from my house, which I climbed on the way to her house, but I got to come down on the way home. I'd have it wide open with my head low as came over the top at about 50, and it would gain speed and usually about halfway down I'd pass 55 and it would pop out of 4th gear and just coast the rest of the way. Great memories.
I had a blue 1970 Trail 70! I was 10 when I got it brand new and over the next 4 years if i wasnt in school or asleep my skinny little butt was firmly attached to the seat of my Trail 70. They were bulletproof and i wish i still had it!! I had thousands of hours of enjoyment on that bike. Thanks Honda for making the perfect 1st motorcycle!
Was yours the one with the manual clutch? I remember they offered different transmissions over the years between semi-automatic 3 speed tranny and full manual with a clutch that had 4 gears.
Beautiful Trail 70 = I have such fond memories riding those when new... spending many Summer days out in the woods, pasture land, playing in the dirt. They are / were very intuitive to drive and indestructible, as kids handling them. Thanks for sharing!
CT 70 was my 2cd bike, first was a QA 50. Honda taught many of us how to ride as kids. Third bike was a TS 100 Suzuki and a few years later I got a Shadow 500, then a Shadow 750. Then I graduated to a Harley Lowrider. Thanks Honda for teaching me how to ride!
That's the first year/make/model motorcycle I ever crashed. I was 5 years old. My uncle let me get on, then he leaned down, said, "Now give the throttle a LITTLE twist, and it will move forward." And I twisted it as far as it would go. You'd think that would scare me off motorcycles, but here I am, 58, and I still ride. Uncle Joe was quite a character.
I had one of those Honda 70's in the exact same color in the early 1070's when I was a young boy. I loved it and this video brought back many fond memories. Thank you.
I had one just like this. same color, same 3 speed manual/automatic. There were 13 of these in my neighborhood growing up where every yard had some sort of trail through it. Mostly at the driveway edges where trails were worn in to get in or out of the yard and jump the exit. BEST bike ever made!!
I had this exact same copper-colored Trail 70 Honda as a kid when growing up on farm in Kansas. It was my 2nd bike after originally having the smaller Mini Trail 50 Honda and before graduating to a Yamaha DT 175. Good times!
I got a used one growing up in rural ks. Still have it. It's the 4 speed manual, same orange as the one in the video. My cousin from joco ks got a blue 3spd and kept it at my place. Great memories!
Dad gave me a brand-new Gold CT70 4 speed manual clutch in 1972 when I was 11, I still have it. I'm certain it would still run today, if the mice hadn't gotten into the wires!
I had one in that same gold color a few years ago. It was my favorite bike ever but then my dad sold it and now I can’t find any of them for a good price.
I'm 66 and had one of these I THINK in 1969 ... little brother had one too. We rode the hell out of those things and they werer virtually trouble free. Mini Bike, Honda 70, Honda 100 (sawed the muffler off into a trumpet, then bought another muffler cuz it was SO LOUD), Huskie 250 - The huskie came way later in life... My buddies got 2 strokes that blew my Honda 100 away, but sounded like chainsaws. The girls definitely liked my Honda better.
I recently bought a house. My first house. 25 years old and the first thing my dad drops off is his own 1970 trail 70. Sapphire blue. Didn’t run but it made a great garage project. I can’t believe that the bike is 53 years old, and all it needed was a new spark plug, new gas, new oil, and a “cleaned” carburetor. I only say “cleaned” because all I had to do was use a pipe cleaner to clear out the jets. Just built differently back then.
I have a 71 that's look the same, I'm going to keep it as original as possible now thanks to you. I wonder why he used allen screws in places rather that the stock ones?
I have a blast on my Chinese copy..every time I ride, I put about 40 to 60 miles on it each ride .. I currently have about 13,000 miles on my frame and wheels with the original wheel bearings..and 8700 miles on my ZS190 engine swap not without problems from the current engine and frame but easy for me to rectify. But it has yet to leave me stranded on the road and still going
What model do you have ? I was thinking about picking up the Ice Bear Champion CT70 clone. I've heard good reviews and the engine is super easy to swap.
Mine was orange CT70 just like this ,got it in oct 1969 for 14 birthday. PUT 8850 miles on it in 3 years , Dad sold it when I went in the military at 17.
I just picked up a 1970 ct70h. It had been sitting in a garage for over 30 years. Can't wait to get it running again. Does Andy sell any parts? I'm missing a piece here and there and will be looking for them once I get her running again.
What a sweet bike. Great video on it. I would love to see how you rebuilt the motor in a more detailed way. I think it would make great video. Glad to see that you put new and different bolts on the motor cases.
The trail 70 was a cool bike, but in the early 70s the SL 70 was such an improvement over the CT70, I had one and I was clocked going 60 mph, they had great suspension and where a blast to ride!
I was fifteen when my sister got this bike new. She tired of it and by age sixteen, I was on it every nice day. After cleaning my folk's car for my first date, I had an hour to kill and hopped on wearing only gym trunks...the throttle cable had been stuck wide-open for a week or two, but the key was used to continue riding. A quarter mile down the road, neighbor Stevie was tooling round his yard on his 70 with a helmet on. I yelled, 'the gravel pit' and he caught up. About a mile on a gravel road, we rode the last stretch right into the sun and I passed my friend. Out of nowhere, there it was - a welded cable across the road as the gravel pit had closed. Braced for impact and hit...'what happened' Stevie yelled as he stopped. Three weeks at the I.U. Med Center Indpls., IN, I was released and one big scab. I hated the bike, vowed to never ride again! Two more hospital stays from motorcycle accidents followed, the last in 1980 left me a spinal injury in a wheelchair since. All bikes I owned were Hondas, the last a '79 tenth anniversary limited edition 750 - a car pulled out and we collided. I look at this restored CT70 and appreciate all the good times had back then and appreciate that day to be my warning, my fateful warning of what was to come without regret. Tempted at times to look into something like the Honda70 for our grandchildren after our daughters two four-wheelers she survived, I'll encourage you to consider what I've shared. God is Great!
I had one I bought from a 6th grade friend in 1973 for $100. Needed a new rear wheel and tire and engine cover... Think the parts cost about $40...and it was great... Sold it about 3-4 years later. :(
I just brought my 1970 ct 70 back from my childhood home. It was hidden in the corner of our garage in WV for over 30 years. Same color as this one in the video. Can't wait to get it running.
Nice work. Not sure if the vid shows the front wheel fasterners with (one) the latter version of the Honda bolts with the bisected circle on the bolt head off center with a short line to one side. The era correct bolts are centered, bisected circle with no other marking on the bolt head. May be the way the vid shows the bolt or a blemish. Had a Sl70 back in the day. And a few in my collection today.
This was my very first bike, although mine was a 1969, but the color is right and there was no difference between the two years. I remember how I thought it was really weird having the gas tank under the seat.
