It is a rare sight to see Intercity First Great Western trains depart and arrive at London Waterloo rather than its usual terminus, Paddington. The train journey between London Waterloo and Penzance on a rare occasion is fascinating.

'Due to Network Rail replacing a Railway Bridge at Reading railway station over this week so no trains could pass though Reading station so FGW decided it would be better to divert there trains instead of transferring people on to a bus...' - it's in the description Samantha.

The shots from 07:46 explains it, I saw some clips showing the hst's passing clapham junction on the Windsor side of the station. This train is coming off the chertsey loop I believe?

My bad, didn't pay attention to that lol. Mainly stuck in my mind as I rarely see any trains using that side of the loop, let alone hst's

Can't believe this was 7 years ago, I remember working HSTS from Bristol to Oxford at this time then they went via Banbury into Paddington whilst the South West services came this way, might not ever happen again

It did happen again at Easter 2013 and again at Xmas 2015 but in 2015 they only went from Reading to London Waterloo via reversal at Basingstoke.

justinfoulger of course lol I'd forgotten that one, course Reading is complete now so very unlikely they will go to Waterloo again

Yeah via Chertsey loop, but why does my video only explains it self from 07:46? They were rare from the first clips at Andover!

why did they divert these. Paddingtons a big stn and even if a few platforms are being closed for upgrades theres others

They had to close the mainine at reading, so no trains could *get* to Paddington

Very rare indeed..!!!. guess they must have ran via Salisbury, then either from there to Bristol...or St Davids...if they went this way, god knows how they all managed on the " ONE " TRACK...part...west of Salisbury..must have been one heck of a bottleneck, so guess their best way...would have been from Salsbury to the GWR...vis Bristol..??
