This time on Ending Explained we’ll be looking at the possessed doll thriller The Boy (2016), starring Lauren Cohan from The Walking Dead. The ending isn’t too hard to figure out, but there’s more to the movie that can be pieced together to get the complete story of the creepy doll known as Brahams.

Also another thing people don’t realize is that the doll probably had a camera in its eyes which is why one of the rules was “never cover his face.” And “never leave him alone.” Because he wanted to see her all the time which he probably can’t do through the walls very well

1.) He had a lot of time to kill her, but he didn't. Why?

3.) Why did the woman even take the job!?

I noticed that, during Brahm's face reveal, we see that he was mutilated by the fire. That led me to believe that his parents not only tried to cover up the murder, they also tried to kill their psychotic child and make it seem like an accident. He lived through the fire and his parents became overwhelmed with guilt for trying to kill their own child which is why they tried to make it up to him for years by caring for him so fervently before they finally lost it and killed themselves.

    • @babyfaec

    • @AriPotty67

I really like that, when watching the movie the most perplexing part was why the parents killed themselves, i never understood, like if they wanted freedom from there son they could have just left, but it wasn’t from Brahm, it was the guilt that they felt when they tried to kill him,
      It all makes sense 👌

Not just the guilt of trying to kill their child (if that was the case) but also because of all the murders they’ve covered up over the years. That could be another valid reason as to why they tried to get away from him to commit suicide.

Brahms didn't say "he'll kill HER like the others", if that were true, then WHY on Earth would she go back to the house like she did. She went back because Brahms said, "I'll kill HIM like the others", implying he is going to kill MALCOLM unless she comes back. That's why she stops running, and goes back to the house, to save Malcolm.

Wow, I went through a similar series of changing emotions. The "abusive" boyfriend Cole, deserved whatever it is that he got. A girlfriend is not your wife, and even a wife, you don't treat that way. She has a life to live and if she's on vacation to get away from you and to earn money and figure things out for herself, she has every right to. It's not like she was running away forever. I hate crazy exes like such. By force love.

But that's ok. I like weird people, and have a hard time laying claim to normalcy myself.

I think infact this movie creates a sort of feeling that makes you have like a connection to the doll according to you're own thoughts for it, Its like you're actually in the movie with Greta and not just that, You feel like you're ALSO greta at some point, That's why when i first watched this movie as a child, I always get hunted by the doll but i felt an uneasy connection with it as i felt different emotions even tho its not alive i don't exactly know how to describe it but even until now, This movie still connects to me in such a Weird creepy way😨

I got the ending and the story. But things don't add up. How is Bruams (can't spell it.) able to move the doll around so quickly and fluently, without him being seen or at least heard? There is no way Greta left the kitchen and dumped the food in the trash in three seconds to have him crawl out of a crawl space, run up, grab the doll, move it to the door and run back in less then five seconds without Greta noticing him. I'm confused.

He wasn't just in the crawl space, he was in the walls and apparently had many ways of getting out and back in. When the mirror broke, later on, I'm pretty sure that was one of the presumably many areas in the walls that he could get through. I can guess this because when he was climbing out through where the mirror was, there was a hole in the wall much bigger than if he had punched it (assuming he would even have been strong enough to punch through a brick wall).

I had a better twist in mind when I saw the trailer: if Maggie was actually mentally psychotic, imagining the child as a creepy doll (why the parents treated him as alive was bc he WAS alive) and ultimately kills him only to find in the end, she really did kill the boy. All the "supernatural" phenomenon going around was, just a kid walking around and playing with things

I apologize in advance for all the people who would disagree with my comment but I actually am TRYING to be rational here, just so you guys know. Not a lot of people are understandably on his side because of a lot of negative things about him. He's a psycho killer, he looks very intimidating, he looks absolutely disgusting, talks in a creepy manner and even more stuff we wouldn't know about. But really guys, try to look at his side of the story. My best guess about him is that he has a multiple personality disorder "in which two or more personalities with distinct memories and behaviour patterns apparently exist in one individual." I just think that he's suffering from a mental disability that the Heelshires weren't able to take care of since they were afraid of losing their only child. No one actually spent time on trying to help him (his parents were paying more attention on the doll), and all that time spent inside the walls and mostly being alone all the time had made him feel a sense of loneliness. That's when Greta entered his life and he had high hopes that he won't be alone anymore. Given that he has been living in the walls ever since he was a kid, I don't think he would actually do "something" to the dummy of Greta. To prove that point, there's a part in the letter that says "She is yours to love and care for," ( 5:09 ). I mean yeah sure he kills people, but I think that dummy's just being used for a cuddle buddy. I hope. Anyway, my main point is how amazing would it be if Brahms was on your side? Think about it. He really just needs someone who would keep him sane. You could actually let him go have a shower (or more preferably a spa day), buy him actual clothes that would actually look good on him and BAM. You have a protector/serial killer ready to slay whoever you'd want for him to kill.

That would’ve been a good reveal that the doll wasn’t a spirit.

And why one of his rules is to never cover his face and not to leave him alone.

But a camera would have been explored when the doll was smashed.
      And he didn't need one.
This is a very old house, there might not be a single spot he can't see from inside the walls.
When all this started he was still young and his parents had to convince him to stay in the walls (not just to protect him, they likely couldn't stand being near him.
They don't seem delusional to me, I don't think they see the doll as the innocent little boy, Brahms obviously never was.
      That doll is a "proxy".
They can interact with it without going near Brahms and because he can watch them interact with the doll, he felt loved and cared for because he can imagine to get all that care and because they know that he watches the doll is also a way to communicate with him.
So as long he can imagine that he is loved and cared for like the doll, there is a chance he stays where he is.
That's why the doll is treated like a living person, to keep him calm.

I just saw this movie today. I'll add my 2 cents. Obviously Braums killed the little girl. I think that was his first psychotic episode. And I think he started the fire. Not the parents. His face was burned. You can tell when his mask breaks. His parents wouldn't have done that to their child. I think they considered admitting what he did because he was so young. And he tried to kill them. The father says "we don't use the fireplace anymore. It's a hazzard." It took me a while to figure out why they would keep the doll. And then it hit me. It's common to use a doll to demonstrate behavior for children. "Look what missy doll is doing. She's taking her medicine like a good girl." With Braums being caged up in the house at 8 years old, , they would try to figure out how to control him. I believe the idea was that the doll was good Braums. He followed the rules. He did as he was told. And was talked to with affection. Everything the real Braums was supposed to do, doll Braums had to do first by example. While praying, the parents talked about being simple. As in not being very bright. I think we can say that Braums had a low IQ and was murderous when not controlled by his parents. They created a strict set of rules for him to live by and the doll to show by example that good boys are quiet and obey the rules. At least, that's what made the most sense to me

A slight mistake there buddy. "If you leave I'll kill him! I'll kill him like the others!!" he meant Malcolm, that's why Maggie went back in the first place cause she realized she couldn't just leave him to die. by "the others" he probably meant the little girl and Cole. I don't think he'd have hurt Maggie if she didn't stab him or rejected him or something, considering how docile he was with her when she was being amicable. Also, looking at the old pictures it was quite obvious that little Brahms was quite smitten with Emily. She probably rejected him or something and he reacted, it could even have been an accident. He was 9 years old. what MAY have fucked him up tho was being locked inside the walls and watching how the embodiment of him was being treated by his parents as a little boy forever. He doesn't really seem like a raging psycho who'd kill for no reason to me considering he could've just quietly killed Cole right there, hid the body in the forest while everyone was sleeping and let it pass off as some sort of supernatural event since Maggie DID ask for his help. but no, he was just trying to scare him off. he didn't even kill Malcolm either, he just basically fought back. Lastly, there was no indication of him killing the nannies whatsoever. Mentally retarded? Yes. Raging psycho? Nah.

People are able to survive those. His parents killed themselves because they most likely could not cope with this lifestyle. His strength isn't all that far-fetched.

After reading what you've said, I'm gonna get kooky for a minute...........just for the hell of it. Being that most are clueless about unions, people birthing/having children, sex, energy and what's referred to as spirit...............most will fail to see that these two loved their offspring (in the same light that they loved themselves) to the point that who they were would and should be front and center for any person with working eyes to see. I didn't see the movie, but my perspective has changed after reading someones comment. When he said that the father approved of her (I chuckled) as, the father was doing what any normal parent would do for the child that they cherished and or want to make someone else responsibility. In this specific union, their beliefs and requests are beyond kooky, which is why they saw eye to eye and did everything in unison. Which makes me believe they ended their life so viciously because they were vicious and maybe in their head felt that doing so would end whatever vicious cycle and their son would be normal being that they found someone that was suitable for him, as they both approved of her. Kooky is just mf kooky!!! I could go deeper, but I think I've had enough when it comes to delving into this.

There's a few things I want to know;If the parents started the fire to protect Brahams, how come the 28 year old Brahams has a burnt face? Was he in the house at the time of the fire? Did the parents intentionally want to kill Brahams? And also, the letter said 'she is yours to love and care' I'm pretty sure that Brahams had no intention to kill Greta. He was just lonely and isolated. I think that he actually liked Greta. After all, he didn't reject her, and he made her sandwiches, and he kinda..*cough cough* tried to make out with her. Brahams was so jealous when Malcolm and Greta were 'together' that he played the loud music to distract them. also, when you said that Brahams told to Greta 'I'll kill you just like the others' I'm pretty sure he was actually saying 'I'll kill him! (Malcolm) I'll kill him just like the others' I rewatched the movie a couple of times, and I heard 'him' instead of 'you'. as for the doll that Brahams made................... I don't know, maybe he was like 'Well, you have a doll of me, why shouldn't I have a doll of you?' And I don't think that he did anything bad to the Greta doll, I mean, he hasn't matured mentally. also, I read the Wiki, and it said that Greta got the screwdriver just in case something bad happens. So maybe she didn't exactly plan to kill Brahams. (I think I only wrote this paragraph because I ship Greta x 28 year old Brahams)

Hello. I like your comment. It was a very thoughtful response. I have seen quite a few people say the same thing about Brahms and the fire and if the parents had something to do with him getting burned. I can see where some can come to that conclusion although I may not agree with it. I mean it is normal to think if the parents knew they were going to start the fire in the first place that they would had made Brahms aware of the fire and told him to stay clear from the fire. So, that can leave open the question of how did he get burned than? I honestly feel perhaps he just got in the way of the fire by an accident and ended up being harmed by it. I can not see Brahms parents hurting him intentionally to get rid of him though. I feel if they really wanted to get rid of Brahms they would not had went through all the trouble to make it seem like he died in the fire so that he would not be taken away from them. I could be wrong but it is hard for me to believe they would try to kill Brahms. He was their little baby boy. I feel they tried to hold unto him for as long as they could until they could not take it anymore. I was just sad for the parents and Brahms. The parents lost their child in a way the day he killed Emily. His innocence was gone and they knew their child would not live a normal life after what happened. Plus, Brahms just needed the proper mental help and he never got it. He was a victim to his own mind. You can not help if you are mentally ill. However, I am in no way saying it was acceptable what he did but I just have a lot of empathy for him. I was sad if I must admit.
Plus, you said next that you feel Brahms would not had killed Greta and that he liked her and did not reject her. Well, yes he liked Greta of course or else one dead give away for this is that he would not had put up with her not following the rules and being rude to the doll at first. I feel if that was anyone else he would had already killed them for not following the rules. Likewise, yes he did not reject Greta but at the end when she tried to kill him I honestly feel he would had choked her death if she did not twist that screwdriver into his stomach more. I feel he would had felt bad afterwards about doing it but in the moment he was so upset with what she did. I mean she did try to kill him (how ironic like he did with Cole and tried to do with Malcolm and all the others) lol but you get my point. I mean I look at it this way if I have a huge crush on a guy and everything is going well for a while and than out of nowhere he tries to stab me you best believe I will be try to fight back and would not look to kindly at him at all and all that like for him will go right out the door. lol I relate this to Brahms and Greta situation. Yes he liked her a lot but when she stabbed him all that like went out the door and he was going to choke her to death. He was just caught up in the moment.
As well as, I agree with you about the doll that Brahms had of Greta. I do not think he did anything bad or "weird" with it. I felt he probably just cuddled with it. He was lonely like you said. He had no real interactions with people outside the house for 20 years, plus him already not being mentally well. His whole situation was sad to me, despite what he had done.

I had basically just now seen the movie, and I also understood he said "I'll kill him like the others", which is why she turned back at the gate, saying "Malcolm." It makes sense that he would rather kill the men he's jealous of than her. Also I think the parents started the fire to intentionally kill him, but he survived, and now they lived like this because they were too scared of him to leave. In the beginning, especially with the father, you could see it was driving them quietly insane, which is why thy left him with the girl - a peace offering to keep him company - when they left.

Madenique van Wyk Hey. Great input. I respect your opinion of course but I found some information in an article that debunks this speculation of Brahms parents trying to kill him. But, what I would like to say first is that I just feel if the parents really wanted to kill Brahms would not they already had done it? If they did start the fire intentionally to kill Brahms as you have stated and some other people that seems quite the coincidence that the parents would do that right when Brahms kills Emily. This makes it appear that it was not to harm Brahms but to create a fire and pretend Brahms died so that he would not get in trouble by the police. Plus, if they did intentionally try to kill him why try to kill their own son themselves if they were so afraid of him? Why not just let the authorities know Brahms was mentally ill and he needed to leave the house? I just feel Brahms accidentally got burned in the fire when his parents started it. Somehow it just happened but that does not mean they tried to kill him whatsoever.
But, I actually found an article interview a while back of the writer of the movie Stacey Menear and even he says something that I feel speaks for itself with the whole issue of Brahms parents tried to kill him. I feel this interview puts this speculation at rest. I will get to the main part of what he says. I will put what he says but I will also leave you the link below so that you can go to the article if you choose so that you can see it with your own eyes. Its the sixth question down if you go to the article.
Stacey Menear was asked in the interview :
Why do you think Brahms parents needed to kill themselves? Out of guilt?
Than he responds " I think they felt like they had fulfilled their missions and they couldn't stay there any longer. This was never planned. They hid this kid to keep him away from the police, and this sort of happened over time, and then it got to this point that they're horrified at what has happened and what they've become. At one point in the script, Mr. Heelshire says, "It happened little by little, then all at once."
      Link to article: www.cosmopolitan.com/entertainment/movies/q-and-a/a52604/the-boy-twist-ending-stacey-menear-interview/
Now, does that sound like Brahms parents wanted him dead so they started the fire or does not the writer himself of the movie just say that Mr and Mrs. Heelshire hid their son from the police? He says they tried to hide their son. After all Brahms is their child, despite what he had done. I could not see them trying to kill him.
I just feel this aspect of the movie was a big one because I truly feel Brahms parents loved him. He was their flesh and blood and their love ran eternal for him so much that they did anything to make him happy, which of course this was at the expense of the other nannies. However, they loved him and went through all the trouble of hiding him for years but he was their baby boy after all. That is my opinion but he (the writer of the movie) does state they hid him so that he would not be found not they tried to kill him as others think. lol
Plus, you said in the beginning especially with the father you could tell it was driving them quietly insane (what they had done to Brahms with the fire which we know they did not try to harm Brahms with the fire) and how they were scared to leave now. However, I feel Mr and Mrs. Heelshire were not scared to leave because of their child (Brahms). I feel they left because they could not live like that anymore but this does not mean they did not love Brahms. They just could not fathom what they had let their little boy become, which is what they said to him in the letter they wrote to him. I felt sad when that part of the movie happened. They were going quietly insane and not in the best mind set because of what their son had done when he was younger and what he is still doing in that moment. He was living in the walls and was not mentally well at all. He did not live a normal life that normal people do and I bet that hurt the parents so much. Their child needed help and he had become someone they did not know anymore. They lost themselves in the process as well. Of course this would make any parent go quietly insane. They left Greta with Brahms as a gift because they knew they would not be back, plus because they knew Brahms liked Greta a lot and Brahms would most likely keep her and she would make him happy.
But, I respect your opinion of course but when I see people say Brahms parents tried to kill him I am like what?! lol but at least this article puts that speculation to rest. If I see someone say this again I may just pop out this interview article. lol I just feel this was an important aspect to look further into but I am glad to know they did not try to kill him, which I mean I already knew. lol but I enjoyed reading your comment and responding to it.

the girl with a lovely soul Hey, thanks for taking all that time responding and being really polite even though you didn't agree with me. I read the article, and considered what you said, and I think even when I said I think they wanted to kill him, I was stuck between two opinions. I see your point, and I also believe they loved Brahms very much - it is evident in the huge portrait and photo albums, and of course they keep up this charade which they never would have done if they felt nothing for him. So of course they love their only child, and wanted to protect him from the police when the girl died etc.
This aspect was in the back of my mind even as I considered them wanting to kill him as the truth. I'm not arguing with you, and I think with the article and writer's words it's pretty obvious that they wanted to protect him. My only problem with that, as Toris Liet Laurinaitis pointed out, is why 28-year-old Brahms' face is burnt then? If the parents loved him so much and started the fire to protect him but not kill him, how did they let him get in the way of the flames to get burnt? Why didn't they stow him far away at the time of the fire? Why did they put him at risk of dying? Of course, something might have gone wrong like they thought he was out but he wasn't, or he ran back in the burning house to recover something important to him.
Whatever happened, the burnt face I think is the biggest reason people think his parents tried to kill him. If he looked completely normal, with or without the mask, there would be no controversy. But the burnt face kind of goes against the whole thing. Maybe the creators only made him look like that to make him more scary, and didn't consider how it would influence the plot. Watcha think?

Hey. Your welcome with what you said about me being polite to you. I treat others as I would like to be treated. I actually responded to the person you mentioned named Toris Liet Laurinaitis when they said the same thing regarding Brahms getting burned. You can go to the comment I left them but I will save you the time and just put what I wrote to them.
I said to them "I have seen quite a few people say the same thing about Brahms and the fire and if the parents had something to do with him getting burned. I can not see Brahms parents hurting him intentionally to get rid of him though." Like I said maybe he just got past the parents somehow and ended up getting burned. I mean if you think about it the parents minds were probably all over the place because of what their son had done. He had just killed a girl. Their little precious angel just killed another human being. I felt they were panicking and trying to think of something to do and decided to light the fire to fake Brahms death so he would not get in trouble and get took from them and than they told Brahms what they were going to do and for him to not go near the fire. Than maybe Brahms did not listen and got near the fire. I feel something happened along these lines or as you have stated maybe Brahms went back in the house and got something important to him.
So, again what the write Stacey Menear said I feel there is not much speculation about this. lol They did not try to kill their son, so I feel the only thing left in my opinion is that Brahms somehow got near the fire and nothing more happened. Plus, you said if the parents loved Brahms so much than how come they let him get near the fire and get burnt? Well, that does not mean they did not love Brahms just because he ended up getting burnt. I mean you said yourself you feel they loved Brahms very much based off of the portrait and the photos of Brahms with them when he was younger. For example, when I was younger and my parents told me not to do something and I did it and got hurt does that mean they did not love me because of me choosing not to listen to them and doing whatever it was they told me not to do when they were not looking? No. I guess you have a lot of parents out there that do not love their children because their child did something they told them not to do in the first place and the child ended up hurting themselves. You get my point but same goes for this situation. Brahms probably chose not to listen, which was important for him to do especially in this case but got near the fire the parents set and he got burnt. That does not mean the parents do not love him.
As well as, you said why did the parents put him (Brahms) at risk of dying? Well, I feel yes the fire was dangerous of course, I mean it is fire. However, I would not say they put him at risk. Again, I feel they told him to stay clear and figured he would and Brahms did not. I would not say this necessarily means the parents put Brahms at risk though. For example, when we drive out on the road for the first time our parents tell us we must pay attention to the road because if we do not we can get in a car accident. There is always a risk of getting in a car accident but do our parents necessarily put us at risk when they teach us to drive just because there is a chance we can get in a car accident? No. They told us we needed to pay attention so that something bad will not happen to us and expects us to listen because we needed to learn how to drive. Same goes for Mr. and Mrs. Heelshire and Brahms. Yes the fire was dangerous but I feel they told Brahms to stay clear of the fire because it is a fire after all and dangerous, which they thought he would do but they needed to start the fire so that their baby boy would not get took from them. They knew this plan would work. I hope this make sense. I feel it makes more sense in my head but decided to try to put it out there anyway. Iol or as you have stated maybe the creators of the movie had Brahms with a burnt face to make him look more scary. lol maybe but I feel that may not be the case. I feel Brahms face being burnt does not go against the plot of the movie involving the parents and Brahms and that maybe the creators of the movie wanted Brahms face to be like that for a reason. Perhaps they will explain it more in the sequel if there is one (ps on the article link I sent you of the writer Stacy Menear says he thinks he is being set up for a sequel. Its at the end of the article) so hopefully they will show what happened that day of the fire.
I know this was a lot but I wanted to answer you with a thorough response. If you have any more input feel free to comment back.
