Things Not To Say To Stay-At-Home Dads

  • From "Can you change a nappy?" to "So who wears the trousers?", stay-at-home dads get asked all sorts of questions about their experience of being a stay-at-home parent. Here, some fathers tell us how they're not taken seriously, what it's like to be the only dad in a world of mums, and why raising their children is never 'baby-sitting' or 'daddy day care'.

      Oh its not just dads with young kids. Anything where the woman is the "victim" of a crime goes too. Like men "can't be raped". Another thing that happens a lot is divorce, women get everything and often full custody even if they are unfit mothers. Because "they gave birth". Yeah, its pretty BS. There is a long uphill battle for true equality in every aspect but one day we'll get there I'm sure.

    Props to these men, seriously.

    • @PhoenixRising87
      @PhoenixRising87 4 года назад +97

      The thing about sexism against men is that it's often based in misogyny; in this case, the thought is that caring for children is "woman's work," so a man taking care of his own child is less of a man, somehow.

    • @laela6289
      @laela6289 4 года назад +42

      Do people understand that men made these sexist standards about women and men’s places in society?

    • @CorbiniteVids
      @CorbiniteVids 4 года назад +43

      @Rehaan Aamir that's a very one-dimensional view of what misogyny is. Misogyny isn't just "oh I hate women" it's also a general idea of what "a woman's place" is. If misogyny was just hating women it would have died off cause no misogynists would ever marry if they simply hated every woman. It's more complex than that. Roles associated with women are also seen as being lower-status. Almost everything you can quote as being sexist against men has to do with the idea that the man is "lowering himself" to the status of a woman, as if parenting or softness or emotions are tainted by their stereotypical association with femininity. As a man pretty much any time I've been hated on about things regarding gender, or otherwise treated poorly in that context, it's been because I didn't match up to the status of what a man is "supposed to be", not because that person had a negative image of men in their head.

      If they see something they don't know about or may not yet have developed an understanding of empathy they are likely to react to it. My dad raised 3 kids on his own after our mum left us. He received so many comments all the time, especially in the 90s. I remember not being able to go into the family changing room with him at the local swimming pool, he wasn't able to change our nappies in public, he also helped a little boy crying in the supermarket once who was lost, and when we found the mother she accused my dad of taking him. Not only was this horrible for my dad, but it was really traumatic for me as a kid. It's terrible having people inadvertently telling you your family is bad. But he was great, he actually founded a group for single dads, organised trips for all of us, and he even took cooking classes for dads and single dads

  • @user-uk1tl4ct9y
    @user-uk1tl4ct9y 5 лет назад +179

    I do consider myself feminist and all that but this is one of the things I always catch myself thinking dumb things about. It's so weird how we've been conditioned to like "question" dads who take care of their kids. And I can't even say it's because my dad wasn't in my life, because he was. He actually always picked us up from school, he cooked the meals and everything, he always took us shopping or to the zoo or something, so it's really not that I'm not used to dads being dads. It's literally just my own ignorance that always stops me when I see a dad out with his kids and makes me think stuff like "oh, where's the mum?" That's why I really like these videos because they really get you to think about the things you think or say about a specific group of people and they challenge you to do better. Love it, thanks for calling me out on my own ignorance

    I have a stay at home dad and a working mum and at school they'd often say 'ask you mummy about this' and I never knew whether they meant 'ask the parent at home right now' or whether I really did need to ask my mum cause she was the one who handled the money and stuff. And my parents were obviously both emergency contacts but my dad was higher up cause he was always free. They were only meant contact my mum if they couldn't get a hold of my dad, which never happened. But once I fell of a climbing frame and hit my head and they ignored the preference and called my mum like five times and didn't even think to call my dad. So when I got home I was upset cause I was told, 'your parent isn't responding' and my dad was so confused so he called the school and they said, 'we called her mum about 5 times but she didn't respond' and he was like, 'no shit, she's on a business trip in Dubai right now and was in meetings all day'

    I started daycare when I was still an infant. My mom and dad worked 9-5 for almost my entire life (I don't know when I started daycare, but for reference I'm in college now). I was always in aftercare and was generally the last kid picked up until I was old enough to ride the bus and later on, drive. It doesn't matter who the "bread winner" is. I love my parents dearly, but I wish I could have had one of taking care of me at home. That's such a huge privilege--I wouldn't have cared if it was my mom or dad. The point is, men are capable of nurturing just as much as women, and women are capable of being hard workers just as much as men. Having a stay at home parent is a gift.

      @Knowtheledge Thelastdayz but why? If they can afford to only have one parent working, surely bringing up, nuturing their old child is just as important as working? To be fair bringing a child up is a bit like work. But without the lunch breaks, tea breaks, holidays etc, pay etc. Being a stay at home parent does not mean that they are work shy, it's a wonderful gift to be able bring your own child up

    • @laurakelly434
      @laurakelly434 5 лет назад +3

      @Knowtheledge Thelastdayz so no one should be a stay at home parent? Yes...let's just pay someone else to bring the child up. If one person can support the family, why not bring your own child up instead of working just for the sake of it?

I never thought of my mom as being responsible for cooking, cleaning, etc. My parents didn't have to ask me to participate, because I enjoyed it so much. Saturday was "cleaning day" and I would help them until about noon and then I would go and play outside with my friends and my parents would carry on until the evening. So all u stay at home dad's/mom's, keep ur head up. You have the best job's, doesnt pay much but u see all the 1st in ur child's life, that is priceless, and yes there are 1st even through teen yrs!
