Benkei: The Warrior Monk Who Died Standing

- Musashibo Benkei, the archetypal warrior monk and ultimate example of loyalty to the bitter end, is many things. In legends, he is a principal player in the Genpei War that reshaped Japan, fighting alongside the great samurai general Minamoto no Yoshitsune. Conversely, he's also something akin to a god of chaos. Now, more than 800 years after his famous "standing death" is supposed to have occurred, Benkei exists in all manner of stories and allusions - from Tezuka to Kurosawa, from One Piece to Fate/Stay to Yokai Watch, Final Fantasy, and more. A millennia of legends and myth separate us from a Benkei that maybe never was; his impact today, however, seems stronger than ever.

ご機嫌よう、everyone! Thanks for stopping by to watch this one. I've been interested in Benkei ever since I first encountered (a heavily satirized version of) him in Urusei Yatsura back when I was 14 or thereabouts, so it was a lot of fun to take a deeper dive into his near millenia-old legend. It's really crazy how ubiquitous his character is in Japan. Hope you enjoy the video, and let me know what you think! Eng. subs are up for whoever would like them! さらばじゃ!
I came here from Fate Grand Order Babylonia, and Man, Benkei really lived up to his legend!
Died Standing Up, Slaying an Army, and Loyal to the End.
yooo fate
This was a lovely and informative video, thank you so much for the work! Although you introduced Benkei from a Kamen Rider series, the character of Deneb from Kamen Rider Den-O was my first introduction to the concept of Benkei. Whether he's actually a reference or someone on some site was reading into it I know not, but it's a wonderful, loyal character.
I now get the "He's Benkei" joke from Haikyu season 3. Thanks!
Great stuff as usual! I didn't expect Yoshi to show up lmao
Glad you enjoyed it! I greatly enjoyed editing Yoshi in (not to mention Dunkey's "Big Yoshi" noise).
Didn’t expect to see Hideaki Takizawa here. He was still pretty young when he was playing Yoshitsune here.
Yeah, he really is a baby here!
Thank you for the very informative video. Are there other legends that are referenced everywhere in Japanese media, like this one, that I should know about?
Thanks for watching! Another Japanese legend (with less of a historical connection) that pops up constantly is the oldest extant Japanese folktale, the Legend of the Bamboo Cutter (Taketorimonogatari). Studio Ghibli has an excellent film that retells the story, called The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. Other folktales that get referenced all the time include Momotaro, Kintaro, and Urashimataro.
This is such underrated content
Thanks for uploading this story
I wonder if J.R.R. Tolkien knew of Benkei, it could have been the inspiration for Boromir's redemption
Interesting thought - they do have that commonality of being pierced by multiple arrows!
Just subbed! I found this in a reddit forum on Samurai that I sub which btw was helpful in my discovering Taiga (NHK) shows, starting out with Sanada Maru, and Gunshi Kanbe. Tired of chasing current historical C dramas after loving Romance of the 3 Kingdoms themes, I'm so very pleased to find such dense, well-paced historical (more of less) Japanese video.
In my childhood in Hawaii, in early 1960's, my exposure to Samurai was Kurusawa (Toshiro Mifune, Tatsuya Nakadai), and then Kintaro the Blind Swordsman tv shows. Never before paying attention to the more "civilized" types of Japanese shows (too much dialogue), I am now fascinated with Japanese martial/political historical videos, art, and geography.
I will be off to explore your YT channel for sure! At 71 yrs I don't know if I'll ever get to tour Japan (my current fantasy) but so appreciate the "virtual tour" your work provides. ( I just realized this show is done by Noah Oskow within the Unseen Japan channel. Super !)
Hi Michael, really glad you enjoyed the video! r/samurai can be a good resource, so happy you were able to find it from there. At 71, you could certainly still visit Japan once the pandemic is over - I hope you get the chance to go. Let me know what you think of the other videos!
Standing up is a very badass way to die
Whitebeard proved that to me
This was so interesting. I really like learning about Japanese legends and history. This was very indepth with visuals which is a huge plus in my book! 😁
In-depth is what we strive for! Very happy you enjoyed the video.
THE ONE PIECE IS REAAAAL
ワンピースは実在する!!!
😅
What movies or shows are used in this video? I would love to watch them, if I can find them.
Hi thanks for the informative video. Could you please share the exact location of Benkei's naginata? Thank you.
I appreciate the use of the Tenchu soundtrack!! Incredibly fitting for Benkei's legend!

This sound like a true monster...
And a legend
Came here from the sohei hero from for honor, literally Benkei
Okay shh shh shh... let's have this, it's a too dope a story to disprove lol
Only in death does duty end.
Whitebeard also died in a similar manner to benkei
This has Guts and Griffith written all over it.
I like that idea - there are some similarities in terms of imagery and trajectory (up until the Eclipse, at least).
But these days it's almost impossible to die standing . The guns have too much force it'll knock u over
