Will admit these 2p locomotives are really nice. The arrangement of the 4-4-0 wheels also is something i want to get on my layout. I’ll be checking out hattons soon to get me one of these to run on my layout. Such a lovely model in its livery. Thanks for sharing this, Clint at Leila Central
Hey remember me? I commented on one of your video’s about starting out, I got my first ever model train today, the flying Scotsman of all things and I really enjoy it, your video really helped about starting out!
I just got one of these. I paid the full RRP because the BR Black ones are really rare. I'm fine with the price I paid because I've seen the review and know what to expect. The detail doesn't bother me at all so hopefully I will like this model more than you did!
When this model came out it was its last hurrah in main super detailed range as it was dropped the year after. It may return at some point in the Railroad range which will be more acceptable. Also Sam I have a interesting challenge as Hornby have just released a trainset for the family for £350 with apparently all of the scenic items, track, buildings, figures and loco and wagons. I think a review and building session is to be done.
Thanks Ben. Yes it’d be nice to see this in the railroad range! That’s be awesome, but just too expensive for one video, and at a look, too expensive for a family to justify - that’s a serious enthusiast price tag!! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The odd one out is Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0 Mogul 46521, originally preserved on the Severn Valley Railway. She has the nickname Mickey Mouse (also the proper name of my first favourite Disney Character created by Walt Disney himself on 18th November 1928).
Fun Fact: The Rev W Awdry had a Class 2P for his model of Edward since there was no model of Edward's basis (FR K2 Class) at the time and even today. The model was fitted with a Stewart Reidpath motor which was then donated to Thomas' main model when his motor failed. Edward is now on static display at the Talyllyn railway
Hi Sam, very in depth and fair review. I own one of these locos and like it very much. I was fortunate to find 3 dapol coaches in Prussian blue and the combo of loco and coaches looks superb. Take care Sam, Terry.
I remember seeing one of these each night during the very early 1960's, running light engine towards the Erewash Valley line and perhaps on their way for scrapping. T.W.Ward's didn't break any, so it was possibly a Sheffield breaker that disposed of them.
I’ve just finished restoring an old tender-driven version of this model in the same livery. Runs well if a little noisy! Any idea of how much it could sell for these days?
I paid the same price for mine three years ago so don’t feel alone there and at the time I also thought that was a decent price, personally I think despite its price it is one of the smoothest and reliable locos in my collection, and after three years in my collection I’d say I’m still glad I picked it up, just need more excuses to run it ;)
This model was given to me for my birthday earlier this year. I do agree with you that it's not up to the standards for a Railways branded model which is a shame though I too do still like it. The good thing on mine is although there is still a bit of a gap between the cab and fire box, the cab does seem to be straight. To say that Hornby are not doing this sort of thing today isn't quite true though. All you need to do is compare their BR MK1 coaches from the two ranges and you will find that they are one and the same bar a few extra painted details on the Railways branded version. Is that worth doubling the price? Apparently the MK2's are the same.
Glad to hear you got this Rob - at least you didn't have to pay for it ;) Of course - I very much like it too - can't be helped really! Yes that's true - I filmed this before their recent naughtiness - particularly with their 156! ;D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Yes that's a possibility - though with the right gearing, a loco should be able to crawl regardless of the wheel size! I'd have to investigate that! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have just bought this model and I admit to paying way too much but I've always been fascinated by the s&djr and live fairly close to it's route so had to have it 😂
The odd one out... is the green one, I'm not sure the wheel arrangement or the number, but all I can say that it's in BR Green. Looks to be a standard class.
I don't plan on collecting model trains for some time (not enough money or space), but when I do start, I will make this loco to be one for my list! I love smaller engines and am less fussed about detail. So the budget range with something like this would be perfect :).
Just a side note: There's a pull back and go train based on this class but with out the tender when u press the dome it uses the generic train sound chip but more condensed, u can find these in gift shops or malls. Maybe u can review it sometime - Joe
Other than the buffers being picked out in silver rather than black, and a different coupling (excluding the mechanism it looks) fairy incidental to when Dapol released no.45 in the same livery (D67). The biggest thing seems to be that the Dapol version has a crest that this one doesn't, on the front splasher. (I wonder which one is more correct or if both is right.) and the gap (to me, comparing the picture on screen to the one in my hand) between loco and cab seems smaller.
Yeah you're right - I'm not aware of any major changes made to this by Hornby! You may be right about the loco-tender gap, they could well have modified the drawbar during their conversion! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have two 2Ps - one (45) in S&D livery, by Dapol as you say, the other (40604) black by Hornby. I got both from Ebay so expect they were secondhand and I probably got bargains. Thanks for the review. I'll look out for the Hornby S&D one (44)! Got to get the layout built.
hello sam I like the 2p a lot and I don't think that £99.99 is a good price for one and do you think Hornby should remake that model in new tooling and would you recommend this model and do you think that Hornby should continue to make the 9Fs or the E2s from david
First thing I noticed about this model was that cab, not sure if the floor was a bit bent aswell just underneath it. Lovely model but wouldn't buy that much for it especially with that slightly poor quality. Great review as always Sam! :-)
Wow, Sam I almost bought this model from Ebay yesterday but the guy would not come down very much so I declined. Glad now that I did ! Thanks for the review.
Might I recommend a Heljan diesel model? The BR Class 17 Clayton diesel. They are rather interesting, and stylish in my opinion. The real life Claytons were prone to engine problems and were withdrawn after not even 10 years of service. From videos I've seen of the model, this tick doesn't seem to carry over thankfully. haha
Hey there Sam. Did you know that Hornby have released a BR blue Flying Scotsman. I saw one in a shop in regularly go to called MAS hobbies. Do you think you would by that locomotive and do you have the American tour Flying Scotsman?

Hi Sam. My Name is Nathan Antwhistle. I'm an Australian model railway enthusiast and I stumbled across your channel back in 2017 when searching model trains on RUclips. I watch your reviews to see if the trains are worth buying or not. I have a HO/OO gauge train set that is mostly Hornby and Bachmann products. I set it up outside on my days off or on the weekend's if the weather is nice. I usually get most of my stuff from relatives that live in England for Christmas and Birthday. But I do have some questions for you. Where do you get your models from? Where did you get those patches of scenery I see in your videos? What set would you recommend for someone who is thinking of starting to use DCC and TTS locomotives? Where did you get those American engines with Hornby hooks? I look forward to more of your great content. Sincerely, Nathan Antwhistle.
Hey Nathan, thanks so much for your kind comment! I get most of my models from Hatton's and train fairs. I built the scenery myself. I don't think there are any TTS sets out there, but a good DCC set to begin with is the Hornby Somerset Belle! I put the Hornby hooks onto my US stock myself! Hope this helps mate, Cheers, Sam :)
I do like the 2p in the blue livery i am not really the fan of the lms maroon but i think because of the lms locomotibe design i could see the c1 atlantic pulling off maroon
Hi Sam, quick request, can you do a maintenance video for Bachmann 4-6-0’s please? Like BR standard 4 etc. The mainline design isn’t the same when you open them up. Cheers
It looks like it would fit well with the Hornby Railroad S&D Jinty, again, due to how simplistic the details are. They certainly look good, but it is silly of Hornby to make them in the railways range, like their "Modern" single wheelers.
Have to agree with you sam this is not a railways model but i still like it i have ome myself. Also this model was still released whrn the old management at hornby were in charge whi from a quote from an ex employer i quote 'Didn't know the diffrence between a steam engine or a diesel engine'
Hi sam nice video i have the same livery and numbered one but its tender driven than loco driven so its just the motor in the loco being a new tooling for this model.
Nice looking loco there. Lack of detailing does kinda let it down which is disappointing for a train at that price you paid for it. But other than that, it is a nice looking loco
Just wanted to say this is a beautiful engine :) and you did a great job with this video :) and the carriages are really nice as well :) and you know that model railway club I was telling you about before I finally went to that for my first time yesterday and it was great! :)
Thanks very much Paul - they really are beautiful! Glad to hear you liked the club too - going to become a regular then?? :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have one of these but No.45. The cab is straight and not bent backwards so I'm guessing that is a manufacturing fault with yours. I paid £75 for mine brand new in 2019, which is about the correct price or such a model. The traction tyres kept coming off on 2nd radius curves which was immensely frustrating. So I took them off and it now runs without them. The downside of that is adhesion. Very poor, so it is limited to 3 coaches or 7 or so goods wagons, although photos of 2Ps with a goods train seem to be very rare since the loco was not classified to pull freight. Some of the adhesion issues are due to graphite on my track. However, it runs perfectly and smoothly and has never stalled on any of my 20 or so dead frog points. Yes it lacks detail but from a short distance away whilst running, you can't tell.
No, the cab should not be tilted. I located a Hornby 2P on the Hatton's site and the cab is aligned as you would expect-- no gaps. It was another lamentable encounter with Hatton's search function.
Hi I'm a recent subscriber. I'm currently in the planning stages of a post apocalyptic diorama based around railways. It'll be the first non-lego related thing I do on my channel and I have an idea of what wagons and breakvans to use but I'm not sure what locomotive to use. I would like to go with small steam locos. But something that was popular to be seen round Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire. I was wondering what small locos would fit in that sort of area?
Hey! Thanks a lot for the comment and subscribing! Ooh that's quite tricky - I'm not 100% sure about that - how about the midland 1F, or were you looking for something smaller? :) Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hello there (pls reply with the line from Star Wars) and i recently bought a hornby Hogwarts Express and it runs great but it does get stuck on points just warning you incase you are getting one
@@SamsTrains Basically they designed great cars, but never 'signed them off', just left the customer to complain, to find the faults!! Allegro, Maxi, Maestro, Metro, Montego, Princess and Ambassador were all guilty of this - could have been truly good (let's not say excellent, perhaps!!) cars, but they simply had too many 'niggling faults'.
Well done i did enjoy that, I agree that model has no buisnuss being in the main range, but a great livery, I do like that loco, Maybe not the model as much. Well done great video Sam 👍
I really like this SDJR blue along with the LNER apple green and KCR red, but to me the inclined cab really damages its look... Btw, the odd one out should be Ivatt class 2.
I think the only advantage to them still selling it as a premium model is that they do it in a better livery. Take the jinty thats s&d and it has no lining though that is accurate its still not quite as amazing. Also as for the similarity between 0-6-0 and 4-4-0 stems from triang days with there standard chassis just remotored with cheap chainese motors
Hey Sam, This model is beautiful wish I had it too bad it’s so expensive. I have a question, do you think that would be the loco Edward (Thomas and Friends) was based off? Keep up the good work CHOO - CHOO! Sincerely, Jiggy
To be fair if the cab was actually fitted straight, the cab floor might line up a bit better with the tender 😂 and I don't think there are many nicer liveries than the s&djr prussian blue ones... there probably weren't that many loco's that ran on those lines, but they could release any loco in that livery and I'd probably buy it 😂
If ever a model needed a complete re-tool to current standards, its this LMS 2P. Midland 4-4-0s are such lovely proportioned locomotives, someone really should pick up the baton. I'd go so far as to say I'd prefer Bachmann to tackle one, ideally the MR 483 class to take advantage of their Johnson tender from the 3F and 4F for a bit more variety and so as not to duplicate this Horfix LMS version.
Might be due to be re-released as it has not been seen since 2015 and I have noticed hornby tend to wait 5 or 6 years till they add some of the older models into the Railroad range.
I love the 'Prussian blue', just a shame about those tracton tires. I noticed the cab looked odd right away but not something noticable unless you are looking closely I would think, a shame nevertheless.
Me too Ian - the livery is one I'd love to see more of! No idea what's wrong with the cab - it's very definitely stuck that way though! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam: "They don't seem to do this anymore, they seem to respect the boundary between the railways and railroad range" Hornby: **RELEASES EX LIMA 156 AND 66 AS WELL AS AIRFIX 4P INTO RAILWAYS RANGE**
Oh sam I feel old now I’m nearly the same age as that loco tooling. Hey ho it’s only a number. I have to agree with you on the price if it started at 50 that would be much better
Man, I remember the original review, we were all younger, and you had like 2000 subs!

Yes that's a possibility - though with the right gearing, a loco should be able to crawl regardless of the wheel size! I'd have to investigate that! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I think with the new management that are now in place at Hornby, if re-released would definitely be in the Railroad range.
I hope so John - that would be nice!

Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It looks like it would fit well with the Hornby Railroad S&D Jinty, again, due to how simplistic the details are. They certainly look good, but it is silly of Hornby to make them in the railways range, like their "Modern" single wheelers.
Yeah absolutely right! Hopefully they won’t pull stunts like this any more!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Yes, or maybe they should make a branch that's just re-releases of the old Tri-Ang stuff, like Lionel does with our O gauge in the US :P
A fair rating, An intriguing model and an excellent review 👍👍👍
David Arnold ikr
Thanks very much David, you're very kind! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
My dad owns one of these from hornby 41 years old now, shame none were preserved
That's pretty cool - does it still work?! Yes it's a great shame :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Congrats on 51k subs
Sam how do u keep your track so perfect I have a Thomas Hornby and it keeps stopping cause of a little bit of track falling off
haha thank you!!! :D
I love 4-4-0 locomotives 🚂 ♥
Me too Cade! :D
Last summer I got this loco for 103 pounds. I used to think it is pretty good value for a 4-4-0, until this video came along.
So I wasted my dad's money. :(
Ahh sorry if I've made it sound bad - but then again, it's not a waste at all if you enjoy it! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hey Sam's trains what about the union big boy?
I'd love to try that one day!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Another top video sam! All the best matey
Cheers Andy, appreciate it!
Have to agree with you sam this is not a railways model but i still like it i have ome myself. Also this model was still released whrn the old management at hornby were in charge whi from a quote from an ex employer i quote 'Didn't know the diffrence between a steam engine or a diesel engine'
Thanks Daniel - oh yeah me too, I love mine! haha that's probably very true - hopefully they'll be doing better now! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have this, I did pay top money, mainly for the livery. Good review Sam, I agree wholeheartedly.
Thanks Ray! Yes this one stings a bit doesn't it?
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
You should get a K.M.R LMS class 2P kit to build a replica of Edward.
Oh wow! I would really love to have a go at that! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi sam nice video i have the same livery and numbered one but its tender driven than loco driven so its just the motor in the loco being a new tooling for this model.
Hey Joseph, ahh yes - the tender driven ons are pretty good though, and smooth too! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Brilliant review I always liked the SDJR livery.
Thanks so much mate - me too!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I’m pretty sure the odd one out is the one on the freight train at 23:21
Well spotted William! :D
It has the same tooling as my beaten up old LMS black tender drive 2p lol. Grate vid keep up the grate content 😉😉
haha yeah - it's been around for a long while!! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Nice looking loco there. Lack of detailing does kinda let it down which is disappointing for a train at that price you paid for it. But other than that, it is a nice looking loco
Thanks a lot Cameron! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Anytime about the engine and yeah I really like the club and yes I might become a member one day! :)
I thought not, so that’s another issue then!! :O

Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains that's the thing I'm not sure as there were alot of small steam locos round WW2
Also I live in North Carolina Miller street in Havelock. I would like to see your model railway too.
Ooh very nice! I live in the UK! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hello there (pls reply with the line from Star Wars) and i recently bought a hornby Hogwarts Express and it runs great but it does get stuck on points just warning you incase you are getting one
General Jason! Sorry to hear it gets stuck on points - that can't be good!! :O
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
you are strong with the force
As stated earlier, a good, honest review Sam. Pity. Could have been a nice locomotive. Reminded me of British Leyland in the 70's!! Al.
Thanks a lot Alan - haha, did Leyland do similar things?! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Awesome video today Sam beautiful locomotive might have to get it lol
Thanks James! :D
Well done i did enjoy that, I agree that model has no buisnuss being in the main range, but a great livery, I do like that loco, Maybe not the model as much. Well done great video Sam 👍
Thanks very much George - yeah I agree, and definitely a lovely livery! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
and the color oh man this is so cool
haha I agree Michael! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks
Great video 👍 Sam'sTrains 🚂🚋🚋🚋🚋🚋🚋🚋🚋
Thanks a lot mate! :D
I really like this SDJR blue along with the LNER apple green and KCR red, but to me the inclined cab really damages its look...
Btw, the odd one out should be Ivatt class 2.
Thanks a lot mate - I love it too actually! And very well spotted! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Yeah I think that's true - I do love this, it's just too expensive for what it is :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The Rev. W. Awdry used this engine model for Edward.
Did he?!
Hey Sam,
This model is beautiful wish I had it too bad it’s so expensive.
I have a question, do you think that would be the loco Edward (Thomas and Friends) was based off?
Keep up the good work
CHOO - CHOO!
Sincerely,
Jiggy
Thanks Jiggy - I agree, it is far too expensive!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I’ve heard this that this loco has been used as a Hornby Edward instead of the real Hornby Edward. This looks more accurate though.
Ooh has someone done that?? That's pretty cool! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
14:17 I reckon they'd need a Breeches buoy to get over that gap!
haha I think so too!! ;D
To be fair if the cab was actually fitted straight, the cab floor might line up a bit better with the tender 😂 and I don't think there are many nicer liveries than the s&djr prussian blue ones... there probably weren't that many loco's that ran on those lines, but they could release any loco in that livery and I'd probably buy it 😂
Thanks for the comment Joe - and I agree, the prussian blue is excellent! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
5:49 - His name is Harry Earl.
I completely agree - it'd be amazing to see a modern 2P on the market!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I wish they have them in railroad range in LMS and BR livery
Might be due to be re-released as it has not been seen since 2015 and I have noticed hornby tend to wait 5 or 6 years till they add some of the older models into the Railroad range.
Me too - let's hope they do!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
i saw the odd one out! it was the standard class 2.
Great video Sam. At least hornby doesn't tend to do this sort of ripping off anymore.
cheers :D
Very well spotted - it was indeed! haha if only they didn't - I filmed this before the super sprinter came out ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
It looks like Edward with that fancy Prussian blue colour
Yeah it does, you're right! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
4:37 - what's that background noise?
It was the packaging from the other take!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam: "They don't seem to do this anymore, they seem to respect the boundary between the railways and railroad range"
Hornby: **RELEASES EX LIMA 156 AND 66 AS WELL AS AIRFIX 4P INTO RAILWAYS RANGE**
What do your parents think of all your hornby trains
I think they’re pretty indifferent to them ;)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Oh sam I feel old now I’m nearly the same age as that loco tooling. Hey ho it’s only a number. I have to agree with you on the price if it started at 50 that would be much better
haha, yeah only a number, haha! For sure - 50 would be much better indeed!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Yes it is a nice model but the price is to high and that cab not fitting properly would make me crazy!
Thanks mate - yes that's very true!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
