Try to position your cannons in one single flank with strong cavalry behind. When the enemy infantry line gets parallel to your fire line, target of your every cannons to the enemy centre, so almost all shots hit enemy line. Since the computer cavalry always love expose artillery, you can also use it to lure a cavalry duel, but you have to make sure the timing of your cannon shots can weaken the enemy cavalry charge to tip to your favor.
I figured that setting up one regiment behind the other, that the one that's behind has some chance shooting the regiment up front in the back, thus killing friendly soldiers. And I find the horseshoe tactic very useful. @grimzag: When you isolate artillery, the enemy will likely go for it with cavalry or some infantry to kill it. I always put artillery at the front line and in the middle. This way to get to my artillery, he has to come in to the line of fire of my infantry.
you're a tactical genius! heh I have really enjoyed the historical tactics vids. I have used the falling line myself and I like. I know it's a bit late, but I would love to see some 'underdogs' tactics for early campaign games. How to win with poor quality troops. Still trying for world dom by 1750. Gotta start early. Last game had it by 1762. I also like limiting myself to specific troops like using bowmen and native warriors to sweep europe and Sikh Warriors + elephants to pwn americas...
this simplicity and effectiveness makes this a good tactic to use in most cases. This is also a good way to gain early victories too, as this is a easy strategy to pick up on.
Someone else has said this, and perhaps you have addressed this in future videos, but I concur that the music is rather loud, and competes for attention with your voice in the video. I suggest that in future videos, you go to the menu and lower the game's volume (or even perhaps mute it), so viewers can hear you more clearly, and don't have to actively ignore the music to focus on you. Otherwise, great video. I hope the suggestion helps.
And that remark about hating the French is brilliant. Without the French, you'd still be a backwater British colony. Napoleon, now he was a true military genius. At Waterloo almost everything went wrong for him and he only narrowly lost. If he had not fallen ill that day, he would have sent both Wellington and Blücher running back to their own homeground. I don't say I would have liked the guy but truth is Napoleon is one of the few true military geniuses. Like Alexander the Great etc.
I don't know about tactical genius, but you certainly seem to know your business. Competence is generally enough in this world. Good job turning the enemy's flank. I'd like to have seen the effect of your artillery on the enemy.
On Empire total war campaign is it better to continue the battle when asked the option and chase down the enemy or just end it there with the same results? Also obviously Gentleman can be moved to schools to increase the speed of technology, but what else can they do? I heard that they can steal technology from other nations some how? Also can the preachers/church people lol can they do anything else besides convert people? Newbie in need of some advice.
I don't get the use of Light Infantry or Skirmishers. I only use them to place stakes at my artillery and then hide in the woods close to the enemy advance:P Is that good or bad?
sounds like a typical Hannibal tactic... dropdown in the middle and offens in the flanks the circle round in to the middle with the flank, the the enemy is surounded
Do you do much naval battles or pretty set on land battles. Also was curious if you could show a battle using dragoons and how best to use them, dismounting etc.
If there's less than 20 people in the regiment while they flee, they will automatically disband when the battle ends, otherwhise it's always better to run them down with cavalry. Gentlemans can duel with other agents, they can kill like Rakes, the steal stuff is rather odd the AI is dumb, only you upgrades stuff the entire game. No, preachers will only convert people in their area of effect Enjoy dude, this game is great ;D
Guys stop hating on America and France. They both have been through a lot to get to were we are now. One similarity; we both fought bloody and horrifying revolutionary wars. We both are advanced and we both deserve praise. America may have some strengths over France and France may have some over America. That's final. There isn't one better than the other.
A few things: In this game, Gendarmerie are light militia cavalry, not heavy cavalry. Their name suggests they're police units best used in patrolling city centres, not engaged in offensive combat. They suck compared to actual battle units. Also, the Old Guard was established during Napoleon's rule, not during Ancien Régime France which is portrayed here.
hey I have a question that i have been trying to search everywhere for and it doesnt seem like a topic that anyone has really touched on. my question is how important is it to consider the formation of your infantry when you are about to shoot? I mean do you want a longer thin line to fire with or a condensed one? i thought the long line would be better since its like having more surface area and more guns to shoot with than when your are in a tighter formation?
So spreading infantry over long thin lines is important for most firepower and try to make horse shoe tactics? hmm will try that when at my next land battle :) Thanks for the vid!
who in your opinion has the best "cavalry" in general? i agree that the polish elite cav, while totaly awesome looking, sucks do to the penalty on their speed.
hey i really like your vids :) can you/someone do a tutorial on the campaign map, explane what the differient building do, what to BUILD first. and why? and other tips.. :)
I know this is an old video, and you have probably already figured it out, but in case you have not, or for others who might be thinking the same thing, hopefully I can help. First, if you are wondering what a building does, select it by left-clicking it in campaign mode map. In the middle bottom section (where you see pics of units in this video), you should see the building in the top of that box, and a drop-down to the next stage of that building below it, which will only be select-able if you have the required tech to upgrade the building. To find out what the current building does, or what the upgraded building will do, just right-click the pic within that middle bottom box. A new box should appear above the middle bottom one, to the side of the screen; this will not only show a pic of the building and some flavor text, but also list what the building does, like providing income or allowing you to produce specific units. In terms of what to build and when, that is more of a strategy decision, and is up to each player, and opinions vary. What I do, though, is start by building things that provide income. You need money to not only build units (which decreases current gold) and maintain them (which decreases income), but also to upgrade buildings; if you build other buildings, it won't decrease your income (and therefore your ability to build future units or make future building upgrades) like building units will, but if you build other things, you income remains static. I start by building the iron/textile/plantation/fur income buildings, until I have maxed them all out with my current level of technology; I also usually include schools in this round of building, because the upgraded building researches tech faster, so I can upgrade my buildings faster, some of which allow you to build better units. I will then go and build up troops (until finishing upgrading/building the income producing buildings, I only produce units absolutely needed to defend myself), because once the income buildings finish upgrading/building, I will have more income, and can then support more troops. Once I have enough units to not only defend, but also take a new province or two, I will then go around and build/upgrade my non-income producing buildings, like coaching inns. I also start tech research by researching the tech needed up upgrade your school to the next level, and then switch to those that will allow me to improve my income. Around the time that I have moved my troops to take an enemy province, and have upgraded my non-income producing buildings, the first round of income techs have finished, so I basically just start the process over again, by upgrading income buildings again, building more troops and moving them to take provinces, and upgrading my non-income buildings. You always want to upgrade/build income buildings before building a bunch of new units (whenever possible), because maintaining units diminishes income, so building units without upgrading/building income buildings will eventually cause your income to become negative, and you will go bankrupt. If you do as I do, you will always have buildings to upgrade for that part of the cycle, because even though research is slow in the beginning (which means after upgrading/building all income buildings once, it will be a while before you can upgrade them again, because that requires a higher tech), you will constantly be taking new provinces during that part of the cycle, and I usually find that the AI is pretty bad about upgrading buildings. So the game basically goes upgrade income buildings, build units, move them into position while you upgrade non-income buildings, and take more provinces, and then repeat the cycle; of course, that is just a template, and you will have to break the cycle at times, like if an enemy unexpected attacks you or there is a rebellion, and you need to build units quickly during the "upgrade buildings" parts of the cycle. That said, usually after 3-5 rounds of this cycle, you are big enough that most enemies don't want to attack you (unless 3-5 moderate nations do so at once), and you will be maintaining order well because you have a mix of troops and upgraded public opinion buildings to counter-act the clamor for reform generated by upgrading income buildings. So the "upgrade income buildings" part of the cycle allows you to offset the income lost to maintaining new troops built during the "build units" part of the cycle, and the "upgrade non-income buildings" part of the cycle allows you to offset the risk of rebellion that is produced by upgraded income buildings (clamor for reform). I hopes this answers your questions: 1) how to see what each building does, 2) what to build in which order, and 3) why to do so. Again, others will disagree or have different playstyles, but this is just what I do (I have never lost a game); also, I want to state that this cycle is just a template, and I usually have to break it for a few turns at least a half dozen times each game (because a group of moderately-powerful nations attack me), but I always return to that cycle after I deal with the imminent threats. Within 12-30 turns, depending on the starting size of the nation, I usually can not only take any other single nation, but also a small group of those smaller nations; halfway through the game, I am usually so big and threatening that no one declares war on me- not even in groups. I've never made it all that way to the last turns (200 turns?) without winning; if I am a nation that starts big/strong, like England, France, Spain, etc., I usually win about halfway through the game using this cycle; if I am a nation that starts small/weak, it usually takes me three-fourths of the game (year 1775?). Adapt the cycle as you see fit, but hopefully this gives you an idea of how to balance spending/income, and competing needs (buildings, units, emergencies)- at least for beginners. I am sure that there are more brilliant strategies out there, and even ones tailored to specific countries and their starting advantages, which will allow you to win more efficiently, but this will give you a jumping off point- explaining why each part of the cycle is necessary to balance the other and fuel expansion, and why I do each part of the cycle in that order. Again, hope it helps, and sorry if this was long-winded or overly-explanatory.
P.S. Some advanced strategies of mine, which some will probably disagree with: 1) If you follow the basic cycle that I described in the OP, you will not only have enough income to support plenty of troops and upgrade buildings, but you will find that your income is also steadily increasing; I usually try to maintain only a certain amount of income, before I start lowering taxes. I start by lowering the taxes one notch for the lower/middle classes in my home theater, then one notch for the lower/middle in any other theaters in which I have provinces, then down one notch for the upper class in my home theater, and finally lower the upper class in any other theaters. Lowering taxes increases public order, which reduces the risk of rebellion. Lowering taxes on the lower/middle classes increases province development in that theater, which means that provinces that can spawn news towns will do so earlier, which again contributes to providing buildings to upgrade in that part of the cycle. Lowering upper class taxes increases province wealth, which I believe increases social mobility (not sure, but I think lower/middle class swells into the upper class, which usually produces more actual income per notch of taxes). 2) I never build churches, and destroy the ones I get at start or from expansion; the same goes for coaching inns, except in provinces in which I have a school, and my capital province. Lowering taxes increases public order, so I don't need buildings to increase it, except in places where I plan to upgrade buildings past a certain point; I stop upgrading buildings except schools, and one of each building type (coaching inns and economic buildings- iron/textile/plantation/fur) in my home province, when doing so would increase clamor for reform (usually when upgrading would cost in the three to four thousand gold range). Doing so not only ensures that I maintain public order with low taxes and no churches or coaching inns (except in the cases stated above), but also frees up those towns to build more schools and income buildings. I usually build three to four income buildings to every school, until I have six schools- two per page (military, income, philosophy). After I have six schools, I usually just put all new towns to building income buildings; this allows me to more armies at maximum capacity. 3) I don't really invade Europe, unless I am at war with a country at the start of the game, in which case they usually will never permanently accept peace, so I take them down in chunks over the course of the game. Unless they meet that one exception, I always seek to make peace with European nations if we end up in a war (they declare on me, or are allies of someone that I attack), and I don't declare war on them, unless I am playing as one of the big three (Britain, France, Spain) and I have a mission to take a certain province, in which case I will attack to get that one province and one or two more, and then peace out with them by just retaining that one province and giving them the other one or two back (depending on the value/development of the provinces). Nations will make peace with me because I usually have a strong lead on them in technology, and will trade tech. 4) I invade pirates first, and then declare war on native american tribes; I destroy them. I usually have ten units and ten ships at the point in which I invade the pirates, and this is usually enough, because it is early and they are weak; also, no one defends them or cares, so you can take some provinces one nation vs one nation, without several ganging up on you. Same with the native nations, except for the Iroquois and Cherokee, which usually ally in the middle of the game, which is why they are usually the ones that I attack first; I usually have a full army of twenty units at that point, if not a second army of ten units, as well as a full navy of fourteen ships. After them, I go after the other native nations, at which point I usually have at least two full armies of twenty units, if not a third army with ten units. Usually by the time I am attacking native nations, a few of the European nations with provinces in other theaters collapse, and there are a few rebel provinces in other theaters, so I will also acquire them, because again, no one cares if you do. I then move on to the Indian sub continent, and start to take that, but usually in chucks, rather than all at once like pirates, rebels, and native american tribes. They are usually too big to take all at once, so I take 3-4 provinces and then make peace with them; I will develop/upgrade them fully using the cycle, and then attack again to take 4-5 more provinces. Usually, by the time I take the pirates, rebels, and any European nations warring with me at the start, I have nearly all of the Americas (if not all); by the time I have fully conquered India, I usually have enough provinces to win the game.
i cant join the multiplayer it says that i have wrong host version (the game is authentic and everythings works fine) the multiplayer was working but now ??? thx
Don't commit your cavalry in such an early stage. Cavalry in ETW is only good at three things: fight other cavalry, chase down your routing enemies, or take out unguarded artilery pieces. Withdraw if the charge can't take out enemy units in seconds. Always let your infantry line to thin out the enemy first. Concentrate your artillery fire at one particular spot.
What's up with all the France hate here? If you are basing your hatred on WWII that is pretty silly. Most countries in Europe fell quickly to the Germans, and the English were saved by the channel. I'm really curious why you might not like the French and it would help if you have ever met one, not just base your opinions on what you hear on Fox news, though I'm sure for some of you that would be difficult.
i hate France because before playing any RTS game, all i ever heard was that France loses every war, they suck, etc. Now they are the best nation in practically every game
Ryan Giggs11 well technically no as later in this game is set in the period of the 7 years war in which they got axed by the British and lose superpower stats all together it wasn't till napoleon came that they regained confidence however even then france couldn't become a super power again as Frances navy was much weaker than the British so they only mastered the ground not sea whilist british mastered both so ya France has never been the single most powerful country in any period of which RTS games i have seen including total war however they were pretty powerful.
if i ever play as a team with towns/cities in 2 areas i always choose which one( with the countries i play its normalli america or europe) and i give away the ones in the area i didnt choose then conquer the one i did and send a large naval/land force to europe
I was playing the Brits in the Empire Total War, Iwas ambushed by two full armies of Hurons whilst I have a full army of vetarans; the same setting in this gameplay, my army was sandwiched in btw the two enemy huron armies, i had to act quickly, moved all the musket men back to back and FIRE!!! Ambush failed, got my Dragoons to run them down like grass!!! Ps. I like Musket action more than the automatic rifle somehow. Imagine a TOTAL WAR GAME with MODERN WARFARE, CHEAP AINT IT?
Charging cavalry down the middle is the worst thing to do. You may get some kills on impact but after awhile they will swam around you and kill u. But if u have another wave of cavalry after u might make some progress
@kristaps128 I saw one battle with him fighting with the Marathan Empire against britain or something and he lost... But he is pretty good , cause that was the only time I saw him loose.
None of the Allied armies had organized all-tank units. They only used the tank as infantry support, dividing their tanks at the start of the war instead of the Germans who concentrated their tanks into self-sufficient powerfull armies. Have you ever seen "Dad's Army?" Kinda like a British Volkssturm but much less effective because of lack of weapons. If it wasn't for the English Channel, the British would have had to surrender like the French did. The RAF wouldn't have stopped many tanks.
I know that this is an old comment, and you likely have figured out the answer since, but in case you haven't, what you do is look to the middle bottom of the screen, where it shows you army and the troops therein. Then you choose either a bunch of units in the army that are not next to each other in the bottom middle, holding down "CTRL" while clicking, OR if the units that you are selecting are all next to each other in a row, it is quicker to select a unit on one side of the row, and then hit "SHIFT" while clicking the unit on the opposite side of the row. For instance, in this video, setting aside the first 3 units (general and cannons), you see it displayed as 2 line units, 2 elite, 3 more line units, 2 cavalry (moving to the bottom row), and a final line unit. If I wanted to select all line units, I would select the line unit in the 8th position (top row), hit shift, and then click the 10th unit (which would select units 8-10); I would then hit control, and choose the 4th and 5th units, and the last remaining unit at the bottom (13th unit). You should then be only giving orders to your line units. Hope this improved your efficiency and enjoyment.
hi can my rig run this game? I played gta iv in meduim - high settings in 1024x760 res.. my specs: cpu:core 2 duo 3.02ghz 2gb 800mhz memory 8500 gt 1gb Nice vid BTW..
Hi, sorry for the bad english but I'm Italian. With this pc you CAN run the game but you wouldn't enjoy it because of terrible lag also at low settings. First of all, add one more Gb to ram, 2 GB are the minimal. Empire total war is a game which use the cpu very much, and your pentium 4 cannot support such a heavy game. Upgrade your motherboard and your pentium to a dual core one (also a model of 2 Ghz is good, but not excellent). what about your videocard? I hope you had min a 8800 or Ati 4650.
While the infantry tactics are sound, you really should be more careful with cavalry. First of all, you say specifically "a nice thin line, maximize firepower" (2:05) . If cavalry charged while even just some of your men were reloading, your oh-so-important line would get shattered by what cavalry made it through. And then you misuse your own cavalry by having them charge directly THROUGH your own men (2:40) . That kills them! Overall, good. But cavalry tactics could be better.
i love these games but i have no idea how to use tactics or what unit to use where or basically what the hell im supposed to be doing. i just kinda close my eyes and click on things and hope i win. :/
That wasn't La Garde, it was routed and surrounded french soldiers via the germans going through belgium, a mistake france was sure germany would not make again
vary good ... but need some work with the cav just like every one els is saying ... but hay you dont need them b/c u won soo its all good.. oo and i dont know if it was online ... can u plz say if it was are not next time ..

Its funny how the French flags look like they are all constantly routing XD
***** and yet they taken most of Europe with napoleon and gave with the dutch guns and troops to the Americans to fight the English lol
Duck You Yeah yeah, they also gave their pretty little Paris to hitler on a silver platter...
Would have been funnier if they made it a boot kicking an English ass xD, Would have been more accurate. xD

@James Sanchez Yeah you are right, but we are talking about ETW, were Austria sucks and only has numbers.
Take for example the battle of Karansebes

Great vid :)
nice video 5/5 and subsc:). but please show us some online battles with commentary.
have you the original or the special forces edition?
i noticed you didnt press the attack button with your line infantry. why?
Fukutube down there knows those aren't the REAL flags right? just icons, and how the actual flags are in the bttle line when u zoom in?

Long line= Calvary able to punch through it. Took more space.
long line= more shot at once thats true,
also = better use of guns if you form more than 3 lines those guys at the back are just doing nothing
Hi, at certain points in the video (e.g. 4:25) I see you dragging the line infantry into a certain position. How do you do that?
Thanks :)
So you have to buy this game at the store. Or can you download it?

thanks for the advice I think I'm actually getting better!
Can someone tell me how to position the troops like he did? I can only select a unit and move it somewhere i can't make them line up side by side
hey i really like your vids :) can you/someone do a tutorial on the campaign map, explane what the differient building do, what to BUILD first. and why? and other tips..
P.S. Some advanced strategies of mine, which some will probably disagree with:
1) If you follow the basic cycle that I described in the OP, you will not only have enough income to support plenty of troops and upgrade buildings, but you will find that your income is also steadily increasing; I usually try to maintain only a certain amount of income, before I start lowering taxes.
@skydome29 i meant his nationality isn't french but canadian
of course they speak french in canada
What's up with all the France hate here? If you are basing your hatred on WWII that is pretty silly. Most countries in Europe fell quickly to the Germans, and the English were saved by the channel. I'm really curious why you might not like the French and it would help if you have ever met one, not just base your opinions on what you hear on Fox news, though I'm sure for some of you that would be difficult.
i hate France because before playing any RTS game, all i ever heard was that France loses every war, they suck, etc. Now they are the best nation in practically every game
thekingof300 They were arguably the best nation in every time period most RTS games take place, so it stands on accuracy.
Ryan Giggs11
well technically no as later in this game is set in the period of the 7 years war in which they got axed by the British and lose superpower stats all together it wasn't till napoleon came that they regained confidence however even then france couldn't become a super power again as Frances navy was much weaker than the British so they only mastered the ground not sea whilist british mastered both so ya France has never been the single most powerful country in any period of which RTS games i have seen including total war however they were pretty powerful.
no disrespect to french people but it is quite embarrassing to of been beaten by one of the poorest countries in europe at the time
kingmatt2563 to have* been beaten
Honestly don't know why people confuse have with of.
need to do these in open plains to see it better
nice :) i just learn a lot :) ty
Thanks for the vids!
if i ever play as a team with towns/cities in 2 areas i always choose which one( with the countries i play its normalli america or europe) and i give away the ones in the area i didnt choose then conquer the one i did and send a large naval/land force to europe
you need to make more of these, ETW's a awsome game but im really screwed when it comes down to the infantry battles
God save the Queen!
I love to hear a Canadian say he does not like France! What a joke!
Whats your computer specs?
So you did this tactic video the day you got the game
@anttonoo idk prussian inf is pretty good but w/e i might be wrong
They're pretty grumpy and arrogant in real life too
please list your specs in the description dude. thanks!
hold right click and move mouse to where arrow in front of line is facing the way u want it to hope this helps =)
Yeah Prince_Of_Macedon is a cool guy to watch.
Don't do frontal charges with cavalry. Pin the enemy then sweep around with cheap cavalry like provincials and attack them from behind.
So download it then. right
@kristaps128 I saw one battle with him fighting with the Marathan Empire against britain or something and he lost... But he is pretty good , cause that was the only time I saw him loose.
GJ. I have to buy a new computer for this game. Hopefully I'll have the computer to play this game within a year.
why d oyou hate the french? i dont have the game yet so im just asking
Canadian is enough for me, francophone. :)
You killed some of your own troops with the cavalry charge!
@bucknemc they have 200 men a division.
Thanks.
Hehehe, er zijn te weinig lui op internet die zo sportief reageren.
Ur Cool!
hold down ctrl and select them. or draw a box with the mouse.
could do with out the music other than that not a bad video been looking for videos on tactics for empire thanks
GO REDCOATS!!!!
also how do u move more than one unit at once
Ill go with good because you sound strong too. :D
no but really you arent stoopid sounding or anything .
hi can my rig run this game?
I played gta iv in meduim - high settings in 1024x760 res..

Nice vid BTW..
If you are lazy end a battle if you have the patience run down the retreating foes so they don't regroup and get revenge in the next turn.
the vietnamese used gorrilla tactics and has navy 6 snieper team
2024 Checking in
similair to the 13 colonies not liking britian canada wanted independence
i pick sweden only because there only in europe or one continent or area it gets anoyying when you keep having to switch maps but thats just me
Frenchies Rawks!
it would still be an interesting battle :)
ok i'll try soon
thanks
Wait, France has the best infantry? I thought Austria did with its larger 100 man infantry divisions.
How can yu live in quebec city .
Thanks I know I love the game too.
La Garde never retreats!
