I've read quite often that these models with 2 heat settings aren't as well made as the older black single heat 100 watt the one l have and it's great to use, only thing l changed was the power cord to a 2.5 metre silicone lead, and the two M4 screws holding the tip l changed to grub screws.

oh! i just got mine and mine took over 10 seconds to heat up at all, and then it shuts off, and because the heat was sorta on for too long that the tip had to be replaced after one use. it almost instantly rusted, and corroded

i have one and they are good but unreliable the tips lose contact quite frequently, bend very easy and need replacing often, very heavy to use compared to pencil iron, but very good for low light applications and tips heat up quickly if good contact is made, do i still use mine, no its in the bottom draw i find a pencil iron that takes a few seconds longer to heat up, better to use. the weller is the back up iron

Question: why does the highest heat setting (140 watt) comes first ween pressing the switch and then the lowest (100 watt)? What is the logic behind it? Hope to hear from you soon. Many thanks in advance

I was wondering the same thing and while i did not find an official answer, my own theory is that going through high power mode to get to low power mode on full press gives the gun a split second to heat up at high power before going to lower power.

Can I use it for gold soldering?

Hello ! the melting point of gold is 1064°C. unfortunately the 9400PKS Solder Gun does not reach this temperature. i do not know of any other soldering gun that reaches this temperature . best your Weller team

Those set screws on the tip suck - impossible to keep a good contact there.

The switch should have been wired to provide the 140 W at full pull back. Some people are rewiring it. The power cord is some kind of cheap plastic that becomes brittle with temps below 50F. Yea, tips aren't what Weller used to make either.

@Porsche Man I just ordered a 8200N because of your comment. Can you tell me more about the brass barrels and why they're better?
