still can't find any of the full performance on the net, I know copyright blocks and everything, but it's odd..it's one of the greatest snl performances (along with radiohead national anthem and busta rhymes gimme some more)
Came here due to trying to find footage of it. That was the single greatest musical performance my young self ever saw on TV. To think they recorded it the same week, and it was the last song for the album, and only real song completely done in the studio with a band, instead of compiled. Except Los Lobos's song, but we'll not get into that. This was just awesome. Why is so much awful SNL available, while one of its greatest moments is hidden away?
@@astridafklinteberg298 they should work those out. Nobody makes money on it if they don't put it up, and we're all just deprived of the joy of seeing it.
I'm loving these videos about the genius of Paul Simon, LG. Many thanks. Mind you, I intended to go to bed over an hour ago!!! I'll blame you when I'm shattered in the morning! LOL
Nice job on the video. Good background on one of the finest albums ever recorded. Thanks for the post. The 'dance line' on "Diamonds..." is Ladysmith Black Mambazo, backup vocalists on that and "Homeless". I think that cut of from the SNL episode in, I think, 1986. I saw it then, and it has been stuck in my head for 30 years. Lacysmith's backup vocals and final dance were cut out here. I'd love to see that entire SNL performance, if you have it and can post it.
Interesting that Paul Simon says: the only difference between:Graceland winning a Grammy and for Record of the Year and being widely received versus Heart and Bones not having this same success is the rhythm section.
The Rhythm Section is the most important part of the record. The Accordionist on track 4 was already dead. He got the BAND from the CASSETTE that I let him borrow for 1-2 weeks. He ended up not giving it back until the following WINTER, after buying the rights to not just one song, but indeed an entire Gorgeous Library of African Accordion Music of which none of you will EVER be able to hear. Why? Because he wants you to believe he is an Original THinker, & that he had SOMETHING to do with what makes his "best record" so good. It had everything to do with the simple concept of SIMPLICITY and JOY -- which he didn't subscribe to at the time. How was I to know he was a thief? You see, I wasn't a FAN. -Heidi Berg
Can anyone help me please!? I've tried so hard for many years to learn what the song was that he played on SNL with the guys in this video at 4:30 they weren't dancing they we're all banging on large drums and paul was playing the acoustic guitar only and no other musicians. I can't remember the song anymore as I've only ever heard it once on that very night and I've tried going threw his catalogue but I can't place it anywhere...If anyone here remembers that SNL performance and knows that second actual song he played that night with the drummers can you please tell me!? Thank you all kindly!
I think you mean the 'Obvious Child' with 'Olodum' on drums, which featured on my video 'Paul Simon's Music-1988 to 1990', but has since been taken down by RUclips. Can't find SNL performance but hopefully this is a link to the video. ruclips.net/video/9HKNAhAxMAk/видео.html
Yes. The person who uploaded this over-dubbed the released version over the live version. I remember watching it live. PS and LBM blew everyone away with their music.
My name is Heidi Berg. Paul Simon was lost in 13th chords and morose moods of HEARTS AND BONES. --- He is a vampire calling me his "Friend". I was summoned up to his office, and to his home, asked to play him all my cassettes of my compositions, he wanted to hear everything i was working on and all my ideas over the course of about 2 years. Why did I do this? because Lorne introduced us formally (even though we had already met at after show parties) -- Paul officially offered space in the Brill Bldg to me, Money to Live (which i declined) and Told me he wanted to record me in the studio. We'd do a couple songs ... Simon is a SWINDLER. Serious Swindler. These songs were from the Apartheid Era. WRONG. Avoid at all Costs.
The last song on the Graceland was ripped off by Simon from Los Lobos. He never gave them credit or royalties. That's what you call an ingrate. The truth hurts.
It wasn't. Did they write the melody, did they might the bridge did they write the lyrics? They messed about in the studio they had a 'tune" or some chords. They hardly wrote it they fell upon something. Give a chimp a piano and they will at some point create a tune.
I still remember seeing the Diamonds On the Soles of Her Shoes performed on SNL. I was absolutely blown away!

Paul Simon is a hero to us here in South Africa. It's this simple to become a Hero. I was born in 1993 but I know Damn well about him.
Gambu Keep on listening to Him!!

I'm looking for that performance as well.
I think that's the best version of Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes I've ever heard.
And the dance line was also very entertaining. :]
Again great job, thank you.
Amaizng job Man

Ellgee82 Thank you so much you are awesome!
this was Paul's peak IMO
did they even play live? it sounds identical to the record

1:45 Paul Simon kind of looks like Italian conductor Riccardo Muti, except that he is holding a guitar!
