I don’t have any statistics but it seems that an awful lot of tourists who are victims of violent crime on Koh Tao regard a report to police as being futile. Indeed, there is a tendency for police to disregard reports or, even worse, accuse the victim of making a false report and threatening the victim. This was highlighted a few years ago when a 19 yo London girl reported that she had been drugged, robbed and sodomised on Koh Tao.
Yes. George did well to extract himself from a dangerous situation and now he is doing a great public service by warning ⚠️ others about his experience.
My experience is the opposite. Thai people lose face if they get angry or violent. They might be smiling but are seething inside. Violence is a last resort generally speaking.
It would be better if the interviewer didn’t say yes or yep after every statement the guy being interviewed says. Just a tip of constructive criticism. What a crazy story, that island is scary, I would not go there.
Ive got friends on koh phagnan and I have been going there for almost 20 years. I was told a few times that Koh Tao is only for a day trip snorkelling and never take a pretty woman there because if the headmans son likes her, you might end up in th sea and the police wont do anything.A year or so later, Hannah and David were murdered the day before I flew back to the UK. By the time I got home, the news was everywhere. Like hell would I go there. Go to Phagnan or Samui, they're bigger islands by far so the chance you will be attacked are far less. Samui is for people who want starbucks and mcdonalds to go with their holiday and Phagnan is for people who generally want to relax and stay away from that. Its less hectic on Phagnan
Ko tao is a strange island . It's notorious reputation has made this island unpleasant to visit . Obviously , some business services there and workers are not professional . It's easier to change our mind by not going there than to change the place or some people. They would do to Thais as well , not only to tourists.

It’s about time someone faced down these Ko Tao murderers the local police aren’t going to, maybe someone could put up some money for special forces to pay. Visit?
Great work you are doing there mate 👍👍 thank you I lived in Thailand for a couple of years around a decade ago. I've just come back from a holiday there, where I got my drink spiked BY BAR STAFF in Bangkok. Thankfully I didn't lose too much. When I was in Koh Tao in 2013 they pulled a dead guy out of the pool after an all-night Songkran celebration at my resort. I also had an incident of my own where a knife was held to my neck by one of the local Thais. As a whole Thailand is getting worse for foreigners and I don't see the trend reversing any time soon. Of course most Thais are decent people but there is a sizeable contingent who live to get one over on Farangs. (Farang = such a loaded word. More than most care to admit, let's be honest). Then there's the new tax recently slapped on expats and retirees. At this point is the contempt from Thai society not palpable? To be fair, some of it must come from the unfair dynamics set up by our global financial system. However, who wants to go where they don't feel welcome? Time to start giving other, more deserving places a chance.
Thanks for the comment and moral support! Which resort were you staying at when that guy was dragged from the pool? Do you have any other details such as the date? Nationality? Age? Cause?
@@KOHTAOMURDERSDEATHISLAND Sure! I appreciate you. Quite sure it was Lotus Paradise Resort. I never spoke with him, or anyone that knew him, but he was a white guy, rumoured Russian or Eastern European. Cause wasn't discussed - it was assumed to be an accident. Was only a few days after I arrived, and looking back - the first big indication that something was seriously wrong with the place. Early April 2013, sometime around the 12th - it happened on the first big night of Songkran celebrations, or the morning after.
We all have friends that sense things about to happen before we do. We may even shrug off the situation..Lesson learned. Pay attention to the George types.
Showing western society’s compassion for a dogs well being or lack of? Hmm. Many years back, in southern Thailand a British neighbor came home to be told by their neighbors gardener that the beloved family pet had walked in front of an auto and been killed. Upon inquiry, they'd been told basically the pet died instantly, yet upon further inquiry (hoping to see the dog, b/c you always if possible need independent verification) & also to claim her remains for the childrens sake, etc. They were surprised when asked if it was alright to make good use of the meat. Most of we Farang, of various nationalities, had lived in parts of South Asia for extended postings. It was the manner in the communication (mother hadn't yet calmed the kids or lead them away from the bearer of bad news). Once more- tremendous cultural night & day. Although different South Asian, N Asian & SE Asian parts hadn't yet outlawed dog meat in those years, the culture clash could've easily lead to more than heartbroken children if their father had reacted differently. In fact much of discussions afterwards involved the dexterity with which banana knives & machete’s double as tools of the trade & lethal weapons, whereas Farang father arrived in only business attire unarmed & unprepared for disagreement or insult. The islands incl. Koh Tao have always always carried a reputation, well before these more recent tourist developments popularity. Be careful- they’re wild & wooly worlds- not only Koh Tao!
Thanks for uploading Ian. Appreciate it. Could I ask you why and how you first got interested in these subjects, sorry if you have mentioned this in a different video.

I have never been to Thailand or any Southeast Asia country. I am looking to travel to the Philippines soon though & Thailand has crossed my mind as a stop on the trip. Koh Tao has amazing diving spots & that would be my main interest. They say nothing after midnight is good. I wonder if he knew the Koh Tao reputation before they stayed out drinking till 3am ?
Flawed interview. Howabout that Thai guy who has been seen on numerous videos and in fact he was seen at 3 of the murders on the island fare into all this? Is that the same guy who chased this guy? I would have shown him a picture of this dude. He is definitely a suspect.
I have to say, and I am not condoning any of the attacks and certainly not the murders, but I feel like those beautiful islands have been totally trashed from us westerners going there, and the locals, as much as they might enjoy the income, do not like what's happened to their country. They find us brash, drunk, rude, barely clothed, loud etc etc...and unfortunately some of them are then attacking randoms who haven't really done anything. Same as in Lao. That's the new Thailand and the locals are quite horrified at the tubing in their once beautiful rivers, from drunk, bikini clad women and loud drunk men. I am not by any means saying it's ok and I am a westerner that loves to travel but I do understand why they don't always like us.
I agree with your assessment of especially Canadian and American tourists in foreign countries. I'm an epat living for 10 years in a Mexican tourist town on the west coast. I am totally embarrassed by the low class, drunken, and entitled behavior. They never take responsibility for anything that befalls them even if it is absolutely their fault. Disgusting!! Canadians especially used to be well respected worldwide but now they are tolerated because of tourist dollars. Sad!
@@shirmeymckamey9386 oh really, Canadians? That surprised me. I'm British but I thought that Brits abroad would win the most shameful award. We're not all like it but the ones that are give their countries such a bad name. Mexico must be lovely to live in. Enjoy!

One great tip for new people trying thailand, Dont get in a thais way, If you see an angry thai and your not part of the situation just keep walking and mind your owen business, Foreigners so often jump in trying to deescalate the situation not knowing your escalating it for your self and making your self a target to them....
I think that’s good advice although I have an anecdote about a situation where I successfully de-escalated a confrontation between two angry Thai taxi 🚖 🚕 drivers who had a minor collision. They had both been speeding, driving dangerously and cutting each other off before one taxi grazed the other causing minor damage to both vehicles including busting some mirrors. I was an unimpressed passenger in one of the taxis. I simply got out of the passenger’s seat with a pen and paper and started writing down the number plates as I had plenty of practice writing and reading characters in the Thai alphabet. When they saw what I was doing, one exclaimed “falang” whereupon the heated argument immediately ceased, they both scurried back into their taxis and the whole incident was over - save for the damage.
Thailand was paradise in 1990 and over the next 4 yrs i could see it start to change as more tourists came. Money makes people greedy and some into criminals, sadly.
What exactly would be considered disrespectful as a tourist in Thailand or surrounding islands? I mean your a tourist, it would be expected to not know their way of life. I think the real issue is corruption. Period
It's ok, go there and take drugs and then go to prison when you don't pay the 'fee.' You will have many years to find out what is disrespectful, or............ you could do some basic research before visiting the country as most sensible people do.
My guest is there might be a serial killer on Koh Tao island. All the deaths are not just coincidence. Some of the locals there might be heavy drug addicts. Once they're really high on drugs, they get crazy and violence, especially towards tourists wanting to kill them. 0:03
The world 🌎 has never been so divided the anger and the hatred it's everywhere watch your back trust no one and mind you're own business been to Thailand once didn't like the vibe Phillipines is better and going to cambodia soon I would never go to Thailand again it's the land of fake smiles !
Hard to believe the story(completely unprovoked) Very short one sided "victim victim victim" story(walked into a bar instantly spit at and chased out), Been to Thailand many times the people are very hospitable, friendly, show respect respect given. The fact the bar also relies on tourism I doubt he is just picking random/or doing that to every tourist that goes(doesn't even make sense). I witness at least once a week a sweaty tourist causing a commotion in public, projecting their frustration outward purposefully being a jacka**.
It’s not so hard to believe when one realises that it is by no means an isolated story out of this particular island! Most of Thailand is very different to the islands in this area. Thais from central and northern Thailand regard these islands and the locals as being more dangerous and less civilised than the rest of the country!
Some Thais on Koh Tao are simply nasty, violent people who need little or no provocation before viciously attacking a tourist. George mentions that the Thai guy kicked a dog just before the Thai guy turned his aggression towards George.
@@KOHTAOMURDERSDEATHISLAND Really? To me the explanation what provoked the attack is rather vague. Thais, generally very calm and nice people, don't just go after you for no reason. It would be interesting to hear the other side of the story. Anyone who has ever been to Southeast Asia knows how European tourists can behave there with too much alcohol and drugs. At the very least, you should take extra care when doing so in an environment of potentially jealous, full with resentment and violent contemporaries. Take care all
@@terencehill3972 I agree that Thais are generally very calm and nice people. However, on islands such as Koh Tao many of the Thais are descended from pirates and smugglers. Some violent Thais can be fuelled by alcohol and/or drugs too. It’s true that we only have one side of the story but it’s a story worth telling and publishing.
You might be right about the reason n for the attack. We’ll never know for sure. Certainly, many Thai guys can get jealous and have a sense of entitlement.
A bit of criticism. I could not complete this interview because of your constant interruptions. Although some were necessary a lot of useless "yups" or "uhums" every single second it seemed were unbearable. It came off as if you were rushing him and were not entirely interested in listening. Australians are not. There has been French-Canadians that were forced into exile by the Brits in 1837-1838. It was that or death. So they went. They were mostly farmers. They had to leave their land, wife, children behind. Some managed years later to come back with great difficulty, just think of the travel between these two places for one thing. It is way too easy to call Australians all descendants of pirates. You ought to be ashamed of yourself.
You should be ashamed that australia ordinary people like you, do nothing and have allowed Julian Assange to faces extradition jail and quite possibly torture too. The pathetic Australian government going along with it, let the US and UK do whatever they want. It also shows how much the Australian government cares about its citizens.
The reality is that some ordinary Australians have been actively and tirelessly supporting Julian Assange while the majority of ordinary people in Australia do nothing.

I feel the island has it's own problems with the dubious Burmese population who may have grouses to wreck and disrepute the island and more for being underlings of the Thai employers there. How the Thai deal with law and order balancing cheap labor and keeping tourism affordable is perhaps as such. So it probably do come with a price to learn Asian manners. How and the manner interviewee asked about the dog yelping may trigger some cultural sensitivity too. Do not treat Asians there like servants and don't assume Western superiority is my take. Seems to me the island is trying to establish a new Thai superiority tourism standards.

His dismissive attitude to not reporting it to police means he knows that the cops wouldn't do shit because they run along with the gangs!

Agreed
Thanks Craig

Ko tao is a strange island . It's notorious reputation has made this island unpleasant to visit . Obviously , some business services there and workers are not professional . It's easier to change our mind by not going there than to change the place or some people. They would do to Thais as well , not only to tourists.

I lived in Thailand for a couple of years around a decade ago.
George is a cool guy! ✅👍

Good suggestion.

I’ve never lost a fight in Asia one on one. Five on one is a different story.

What was the issue of provocation? Why did the Thais wanted revenge?
