  • By the time I got to see Cedar Point's brand new strata-coaster Top Thrill Dragster in person early in 2003, it's large rear tires were gone, but the fake engine and rear wing were still intact. And as luck would have it, the new ride was having mechanical issues during that first visit, so I have limited footage. My second visit in 2003 allowed me to finally see this behemoth in action, but the fake engine and rear wing had been removed. At least it was running! Filmed in "early 2003" and "late 2003" (that's what my notes say, no specific dates are indicated, though I'm guessing the first visit was mid to late May.)

This is the first video of failed launches I have seen. Congrats on capturing those as I have only seen that in person.

I never posted those launches before because I was like, who wants to see that?

It’s honestly so weird to imagine that the height-record-breaking coasters were at one point new

Hopefully soon we can get a new generation coaster war but on a different level

This guy I know took his youth group there that year and the night before he had a nightmare that when he rode it, he flew off the ride and landed into Lake Erie. Then when he got to the park, he saw the ride roll back several times so he then chickened out and hasn't ridden it since. He then tells people if they can get him on it, he'll buy them their lunch that day. No one has had any luck lol.

I've never seen Dragster actually stop while going down the launch. I was born in 2003 by the way!

wasnt TTD down half that season

@@NickyD yea it was, and we were happy as can be when it was cause when it was up it was a nonstop endless line. The softdrinks were ice cooled so at some point you just couldnt keep em cold so you would have customers upset at you cause you sold em a warm coke... i also worked the same in 2004.. to me it doesnt seem like a long time ago but I guess soon ttds will be an old coaster... hopefully it transitions into a classic experience and doesnt go the way of demon drop hahaha

Things that were different on Top Thrill Dragster in 2003
    1. The 5th car was added
    2. The Christmas Tree was gray (painted yellow later)
    3. The tower Christmas Tree was incomplete (added later)
    4. The your speed sign was still there
    5. The wings in the front is there (removed later)

I’ve never seen the dragster trains stop in the middle of a launch on the launch track before. This must of been a early hiccup with the ride because I’ve never seen that before.

i was 11 years old and remember opening year clearly! and in 2002 during the season when TTD was under construction and we had no idea what they were building. the top hat looked so odd unfinished!

It was hilarious on coasterbuzz there was a solid year of arguing about what those 3 footers could be. I believe the site owner knew but he wouldn't tell anyone lol I think back then people jokingly were saying it was going to be for an observation deck that would break records lol

@@lucasm7177 31yr old me wants what 10yr old me was able to experience back when coasterbuzz was at its peak. The internet was so exciting then! Definitely miss browsing thru all the good discussions that took place over there. At least the site is still running. I check it every now and then, but it's not like it was, ya know ?
I also feel like I perhaps remember the observation deck theory, but I could also be getting it mixed up with all the other theories going around at the time 😅 The good ol days. Now we have Zamperla allegedly reworking TTD! Lol

so much the same, yet so much different. i so wish iron dragon had the original paint scheme. ugh. similarly i wish mantis would have been removed, valravn would have replaced it and could have been longer like the epic Yukon. all of those missing trees near the marina entrance. :gasp: stood in line 5 hours. twice. for TTD opening day 2003. insane speeds over the top hat... baby i'm ready to go....

11:20 one of the ballsiest sounds in the coaster industry, and yet almost completely unknown, uncelebrated. The B&M roar (RIP these days of sand filled track) gets endless praise whilst this gnarly sound is ignored.
    But not by me
