  • Armed with a JVC VHS camera and external recorder, this footage was recorded in the summers of 1990 and 1991. While Mean Streak, the world's record breaking wooden coaster, debuted at the park for the 1991 season, I somehow managed to not get any footage of it other than a brief look from the front of the park.

    I sometimes think about how gigantic and intimidating Magnum must have looked in 1989-91, much like how my jaw dropped the first time I saw Millennium Force in person in 2001. Both coasters spawned and represent entire generations of coaster enthusiasts, but Magnum feels a lot more historic since it broke the ground for large airtime focused coasters with no inversions. I've grown to really love it over the years.

      I clearly remember looking back at Magnum, right after that shot from the front parking lot was recorded, and telling my friends we will never see a steeper or taller coaster. Lol. Little did I know.

      Yep. I was 11 when it opened. I remember very well driving down the causeway (the single residential road facing the lake) with the family and my sister and I would always get excited as we'd be able to see the park get closer and closer; seeing the big rides poke through the trees. Well, as soon as we saw Magnum that day in 1989, my Mom went "HOLY SHIT!!!"- and we were still far from the entrance and she was already losing it over the sheer size of it! It was indeed an incredible time for the park. It was also my favorite visit to the park. Great times!

      I graduated in 1991 and that was my senior skip day was to Cedar Point. We went on the Magnum and on the way down my friend Teresa was screaming so hard she choked on a bug!! Yes it looked huge, it was the biggest coaster any of us had ever seen or been on and live to tell

      Ha ha! I remember wearing my Pantera shirt to Cedar Point and being asked to turn it inside out before walking into the park as it read "Cowboys From Hell" as they weren't too keen on the world Hell. It was the first and only time I have been censored at a park. Lol.

      @@timc0re Ha ha! The craziest thing was I actually saw someone in a Skid Row shirt walk in with the words "Eat, F*ck ,Kill" on the back of it, just as I was being told I couldn't enter with my shirt. I pointed out the Skid Row shirt and asked why is that any different and the employee wouldn't even look in that direction. Oh well. I will show them! I will NEVER return back to that place again. :)

    I can't believe the Demon Drop still exists. Different park, but still. First ride I ever rode at CP.
    And to this day, Magnum is my all-time favorite ride. I first rode it in 1991, just barely tall enough to be allowed on. It has so much personality, it still has a large drop and quick speeds, and for me, the nostalgia is off the charts.
    It's so cool watching old video like this!

      Thanks for watching and commenting. I rode Demon Drop many, many times in my life. I loved that ride. I did ride it at Dorney Park as well but it was running slower. Regardless, I was very happy to pay a visit to an old friend.

    I think that's the first time I've watched a video and heard someone say "There's Magnum Its The Worlds Tallest Roller Coaster".........every video I see says "There's Magnum and did you know that years ago it was once the worlds tallest coaster! These videos are great! The park looked so different without Millie and TTD

    I really like your videos you've posted on RUclips. But C'MON MAN!!! Mean Streak was the new Rollercoaster for 1991. I'm just surprised you didn't venture back to Frontier Town to take close up videos of it in action. Now I know some people had different opinions about Mean Streak. Some people Loved it, others had other opinions about it. Myself I actually Loved it. I wished the 2nd half had a wilder finish, but I've gotten rides on Mean Streak some days when the mid-course brakes didn't slow down the Trains. You'd be surprised how much airtime and laterals the Trains would deliver back to the station. When the Trains were stopped on the Safety/Holding brakes, the upstop wheels were still spinning. Then Cedar Point started to brake the hell out of it 3yrs later 🤣🤣🎢

    • @SeanFlaharty
      @SeanFlaharty  3 года назад

      I did like Mean Streak on my first ride but after that I didn't care for it very much. I would ride it once a year to see how it was running. I do agree that it was capable of some good rides with the trims off but those were very few and far between in my experience.

      While it certainly wasn't the thrill Mecca that it has become today, I do believe there are plenty of things to do in the park for older folks and families. It's just not as "featured" as the thrill machines.
