My dad told me a story when he was at a race back when Morgan shepherd was a one man crew. He said he went down pit road and stopped and got out ran around changing tires and filling the car then went over the wall and came back and sat down on the wall and ate a bag of chips for awhile then jumped back in and took off 😂😂
Seeing some of the broadcast clips (like Kirk's fans at Pocono, or Billy Bigley Jr's story) makes me nostalgic for times when the broadcasts weren't all about the stupid playoffs. The commentators just talked about what was happening, and found things to tell us about if they needed to. If today's booth men didn't have to focus on the playoff agenda, maybe there wouldn't be so many viewers who are apathetic about teams drying up or not being able to justify stepping up to Cup because a charter is not available. If any of you really are fans, you should care about the fate of every team. While perhaps not disastrous, a team closing their doors is never good for the sport.

These make me really regret not paying more attention to those no name cars, with the older drivers, starting in the back of the field, who haven’t Captured many if any checkered flags in the Cup series but yet they do have many Wins & they’ve achieved a lot in NASCAR including just qualifying for a Cup Race. It’s funny how now that I’m older the drivers who’ve paid their dues for years just to struggle to qualify for a cup race, then if they even finish a race that’s the Victory that interests me even more than the drivers who are handed the keys to the very best equipment in all of Motorsports.

The Arnold Racing #50 car was really Derrike Cope's last hurrah in Cup racing, the team was on TV a lot for a crappy mostly unsponsored team. Cope ran very respectable with them, I rooted for them every week. I was honestly shocked when they released him, I was like okay maybe they have some up and coming stud from a lower series, when it was announced to be Mike Wallace, I was like no way, Cope might of been washed up at this point but at least he was a former Cup winner. Mike Wallace was complete crap in Cup outside of a few decent runs on superspeedways.

I will give credit here as this team was really never a 'Start and Park' they pretty much always made the effort to compete to until the end of the race.
I find this to be really interesting. While it's indirect since the Arnold portion of the team shut down the Cup operation after '05, it seems to be that 23/11 Racing, featuring Michael Jordan & Denny Hamlin, are the ones who carry any sliver of a legacy left behind of what was, at first, a decent upstart organization carrying on the legacy of another, in Melling. I also find this video interesting, considering Arnold Motorsports gave EA Sports permission to have the game developer put its 50 car in NASCAR 2005, with Derrike Cope as the driver. That in itself is interesting too, considering the game was released weeks after Cope & AMS parted ways. Regardless it's amazing to see the traces of a modern-day team with a superstar owner in one of the most highly-regarded releases in NASCAR game history. Thanks for letting me know about the complete history of the organization, considering the fact that I was curious about it after all the time I had playing NASCAR '05. Really makes me appreciate the work & change that goes into the development of modern-day NASCAR teams. I hope Michael Jordan & Denny Hamlin have a better run in 2021 than Don Arnold & crew had in '04. It'd be great to see a promising entry fulfill its wishes, considering the history & circumstances that lead into everything surrounding it, as the squad enters Daytona next February with their heads high.
Very good questions. As to handling issues, NASCAR seems to have a set list of reasons a driver falls out of a race. Some are pretty easy to understand, like a "crash" or a blown "engine." Reasons like "handling" don't have as clear of a definition, much like "vibration," which comes up a lot when a team start-and-parks their car. Both show up more frequently today because NASCAR stopped using "quit" as a reason around 1993. This is likely the reason Arnold Motorsports and other "field fillers" have used this reason. Other times, "handling" comes up simply because a car is driving so badly that no adjustment is able to make the car drive safely around the track. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. had this happen to him once at Las Vegas, where his car handled so badly he basically had to quit the race. As to why it's so hard to finish a NASCAR race, there can be many reasons. Before 1972, it was because the technology used in each car was quite crude, and teams had to figure out ways to make the cars more durable. Dirt tracks tore up equipment easy, especially when the surface was bad. Paved tracks in the early years could be just as treacherous. After 1972, when a minimum race length was set, the challenge was the length of the race, and the expense of keeping up with well-financed teams. There was a time where many tracks ran 500 laps or 500 miles, which tested the limits of the equipment.

That's a very good question. The more I've learned about when working on Derrike's biography, it sounds like they mutually agreed to part ways. Geico may have been putting pressure on Arnold to put Mike Wallace in the car since they backed his Busch car at the time. He ultimately did after Charlotte, where Geico was the sponsor. This would explain why Arnold sounded reluctant to let Derrike go, acknowledging how much he'd helped the team, and considering bringing him back at a later time. I'm not sure Derrike counted on getting more rides in the No. 50 at that point because he drove for so many other teams after that in 2004 alone.
