think HALF-3/4 of The Video was Mumble Jumbo and Barely spoke about the GR, I didn’t here but one problem, the 3 Cylinder Motor is Heavily engineered and has been pulling ‘reliable’ 500 hp. But you question it’s a 3?
The Japanese auto makers have been making 3 cylinder engines since forever. Remember those Chevy Sprints and Geo Metros from back in the day? Most people I know who had them got 200,000 miles without trying. I am surprised that the Toyota don't have naturally aspirated 3 cylinder engines in the low end Corollas. Scott is probably scared of the downsizing;-) in EU its pretty normal to have a 3 cil. Engine and they are great. Even the high HP 3 cil Turbo engines for instance the 1.5 ecoboost in the Fiesta ST. Awesome engine.
Exactly! He says an odd number of pistons is unnatural for an engine. Well look at VW's 5 cylinder engine! They've been doing it for years. There's no concern for reliability with this engine, Toyota knows what they're doing.
@@crankybear1236 Nothing. It's just that Toyota doesn't have a performance-oriented 4 cylinder in their current engine lineup. There's the M20A-FKS, but that was designed for fuel economy, hence the 'F' designation for normal head. The G16E-GTS is a performance-oriented engine, hence the 'G' designation for performance head. Toyota had already designed a powerful, performance-oriented 1.6L 3-cylinder for the GR Yaris, they weren't going to let all that R&D go to waste when making the GR Corolla.
The Japanese have been making 3 cylinders for decades, they're in a ton of kei cars. And the geo metros engine was made by suzuki, yeah those engines were naturally aspirated, but there's some kei cars with turbos. So I think they know what they're doing. I would stay away from an American made 3 cylinder though.
I love my GR corolla. It's like the Mini Cooper S and an STI hatch had a baby. Plus the engine is so small and basic, it won't cost you an arm and a leg if you need to replace it 10 years down the road.
My first car with working A/C was a 1988 Honda accord that I bought brand new. I hardly turned it on just to save gas and this was in CT where it wasn't that hot. What I didn't know was you had to turn the A/C on for the defroster to work.
Using the a/c demists quicker because moisture in the air is dropped out by condensing on the evaporator coil. But in the Winter you can demist / defrost just fine with warm air from the heater. In the humid Spring & Fall a/c can be useful for demisting certainly.
My friend owns a Gr corolla. Seems to be a good car. The paint is thin though. I have done Eventuri intake, Magnaflow exhaust, tune by ECUTEC 93 octane, downpipe and catalytic converter. Intercooler coming in December.
Well I’d like to point out that this is the same engine and drivetrain they put in the GR Yaris which is sold over seas. Somebody got ahold of one of these engines and was able to boost that thing with stock internals and a massive aftermarket turbo to 700 or so hp before the engine blew up. So it may be a 3 cylinder but it’s stout.
Whew boy did Scotty get this one now. I absolutely loved my time with the GR Corolla. Also, Toyota and the racing team in Japan have developed an AT (Automatic) with paddles that rally driver Rovanperä, and other pro drivers liked more than the manual. Also Toyota is developing the chassis more, eliminating the "pray to God" moments as Morizo puts it, "Where you put in the correct inputs and pray to God that you make the corner". For sure I will get one with the AT.
Every Technicians at SEMA says “don’t buy the first production car of a newly released version. They will be imperfect and have bugs that are yet to be corrected.
Scotty, Me and my friend went to get an oil change my car, and the mechanic tried telling us that we had a blown head gasket and that we needed to leave the car, and I had a head gasket test in my trunk and in front if them proved that it wasn't blown, and after they changed my oil they tried to charge Me for having the head gasket tested whenever I was the one who tested it to prove them wrong. Luckily I told my friend to record Me being the one to test it and we actually called the police to come and they forced them to either take off the coast of the head gasket test or Let Me have my oil change for free. They decided to take the test off and charge Me for just the oil change.
the Toyota Corolla GR 3 cylinder turbo engine is a European engine, good for short distance in city driving, but long distance driving not so much. The problem with 3 cylinder engine is that they're not balanced well
The 1st thing a potential sports-bike owner needs to do is call their insurance company with a list of bikes. A parallel twin or V-Twin is a lot cheaper to insure than an inline-4! Sometimes the additional penalty is as much as another bike payment.😮
I had a 79 pinto I got over 300,000 miles out of it sold it to my cousin he drove it for a year he sold it to my brother law that had it around a year before it blow up.
Yeah but scotty, your an older guy and you have already experienced fast cars so obviously you wouldnt care for the power at this point. But youngsters like me cant wait for something like that from toyota to be implemented because it is going to be really cool. I am also waiting for a GR version of the camry which will hopefully be twin turbod.
I don't think many people will have the problem of a GR falling apart on them as they're not making many and you'd have to be pretty Johnny on the spot to get one. They're only making like 200 of the Morizo's and 5,000 of the Circuits. It's a niche car for a specific person. That said, I'd still buy one at MSRP, but we all know they will be heavily marked up.
Hissing noise can be the air conditioning compressor. My Hondas compressors his from time to time. If you reach under the hood and rotate the compressor end by hand you can get it to change position and the hiss noise can change and or go away. Try that
I got a 2002 Corolla in 2012. I had to replace shocks, motor mounts, a/c compressor, muffler and catalytic converter, o2 sensor and solenoid valve, rusted brake lines and will have to replace rusted fuel lines too, brake cylinder, indoor handle and exterior handle, and wheel bearings. Not exactly a repair free car.
Scotty seems to have forgotten about the Celica GT4 with all wheel drive and 3S-GTE engines, the GR Corolla is this generation’s GT4. Maybe if they bring back the Celica with the GRC’s engine and drivetrain then call it the GR Celica, Scotty will buy one.

Exactly! He says an odd number of pistons is unnatural for an engine. Well look at VW's 5 cylinder engine! They've been doing it for years. There's no concern for reliability with this engine, Toyota knows what they're doing.
I own a 9th gen Accord sport. They are fine as long as you regularly change the CVT fluid
I definitely think Toyota should have used the 1.8 four-cylinder for the GR Corolla.
that would be alot of fun...not... people want fun and quick hot hatches. there is a reason it had this engine.
@@fondfarewell2 What is wrong with a 1.8 liter turbo?
@@crankybear1236 you didn't say turbo... 1.8 turbo would be fine
A Remied 2.4 for it
The Chevy Vega's were rust buckets too.
Gonna get myself a 91 Accord with the 4S ATM. I wanna put a different engine in anyway but it's already driven 278k km and still shifts great.
The GR Corolla uses a proven powertrain from the GR Yaris. Very solid motor/transmission. Avoid Scotty at all costs!
My first car was a new '72 Vega in Erie, PA. About $2500. The front fenders rusted out. Dealer replaced them free.
Scotty be poppin them muscle relaxers too much 👋👋👋
🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂
🤣😂🤣
I just saw a video with the GR Corolla's exhaust, several beads were missing and EVERY single weld looks like it was done by a blind kid.
Scotty has taken his Toyotas up to 80 mph. I took my 93 1.6 Corolla to 120 mph. It was downhill on a freeway. I think
that was pretty stupid from me.
I still have my 91 corolla hatchback with 219,000 miles and zero issues
Well at least you know better now to don't go there again
@@SnoW-pk9zo Funny thing is it's the one my friend recommended and now he won't go there again.
Like you only have 3 sec memory. The audacity!
this video aged super well.
The 3 cylinder was more then stress tested in the GR Yaris
the Toyota Corolla GR 3 cylinder turbo engine is a European engine, good for short distance in city driving, but long distance driving not so much.
Thank you Scottie for your Wisdom.
Unless you use a red sharpie between your eyes or wears a dirty towel on your head you should always avoid driving a Toyota
Pinto or Vega? Well, the Vegas which haven’t rusted into oblivion have blown engines (except the Cosworth models). Pintos are the better of the two.
people running 500hp with larger turbos and different valve springs on stock internals, I think they will last stock with 300hp no problem.
I had a 79 pinto I got over 300,000 miles out of it sold it to my cousin he drove it for a year he sold it to my brother law that had it around a year before it blow up.
Good evening from Chicago Scotty, hope this day finds you and your family well! BROTHER ! 🧰🙌👍
back in the day i had an astra same as vega with updated motor and it was pretty good car
I was kind-of excited then I saw their price points and said nope
Same.
Old cars have mechanical issues,
New cars have electrical issue!
Someone please hand over your GR Corolla for the man to review.
Love the videos scotty keep em coming
The GR Corolla is my dream car, and knowing Toyota like I do, I don't foresee any issues with it.
It's been rumored that the GR Camry will have the same Lexus V6 twin turbo engine found in the LS500. Hopefully we get it ...
"If you dont run it to a tree or someone doesn't run it to you" hahahahaha
There you go on even Honadas with CVT transmissions.... they're really not very good
Just good to avoid.
I don't get it. So what exactly is why we should buy it?
I love how it looks, don't like the idea of a 3 cylinder turbo..
I’ve always liked Scotty! He’s a honest person!
Toyota / Lexus send Scotty some cars please so we can get some honest mechanic reviews from the best! 👌
I like how he answered the Vega vs Pinto question like the person was seriously considering buying one lol.
It's a 3 cylinder but it's a pretty beefy engine. Cylinders walls are pretty thick
Didn't know cylinder wall thickness was the only thing necessary for a long term reliable engine. 🙄
Thanks for convincing people not to buy it & keeping the market lower so I can buy one.
Very easy to avoid a car when I can't even afford it in the first place Scotty
This guy knows nothing. The gr corolla engine is solid. It's basically the same engine they use in the wrc so it has to be extremely durable.
I just moved to Clarksville!! Cool stuff knowing you live here!
This man is using 1950s logic against 2022 issues
I will Buy one
I want one so bad. But has less room than my Fit.
@@Fauxchemill Yea am using is for racing
