  • The first thing that stands out about any sprint car is the huge wing which sits atop the car. 10-time World of Outlaws Champion Donny Schatz talks us through the technical aspects of his Tony Stewart Racing sprint car.
The wings on a sprint car are made of all-sheet metal aluminum, and the shape has to be 5 by 5 square and flat. When people see these cars, they will think that the downforce of the wing is what does it, but It’s actually sideboard. The sideboard grabs the air and it pulls it left and that’s what allows the speed to stay consistent. Most importantly this is one of the biggest safety factors in all of the sport, because in the event of a crash this is the first thing that absorbs all that initial impact.

Thanks for sharing Donny which I want to see you get into victory lane a few more times before the season is over. Love that Ford power your running. To many restarts and slow traffic has been getting the best of you lately. But many times you sure know how to get that Ford to perform at its best. Knoxville Nationals said it all. A few more laps and you would of caught sweet baby Jesus Kyle Larson. I love that last lap when you gave it your all. It looked just like a sail boat just gliding as you were closing on Larson. It looked lean and Mean as you feathered the throttle on that last lap. I just want to say thank you for sticking with the Ford brand which gives us Blue Oval guys something to be proud of knowing that Fords can compete on a high level of competition.

Just love you are running a Ford engine! Probably the best looking car on the Outlaw circuit.

Thank you. Never thought of the wings as a safety device even when realizing the great amount of energy dissipated in a crash as the wing gets crumpled. Still like the non winged cars better as you stated the wing and its relative position is doing part of the driving (or making the car easier to control).
