I love my SM7B! Those switches make it such a chameleon, and it can be used in a bunch of less-than-ideal acoustic environments because of its background rejection. Desert-island mic for sure.
I do like the SM7B and KSM32 in the mix and that's where it really matters. I own a SM7B (purchased from Sweetwater) and several mics not shown here. I was really impressed with the character of the WA47 in this video though. That found a nice place in the mix as well.
I would recommend the spirit mic I got from guitar center no problems yet got a avantone bla mic from Sweetwater water and asked about it and the sales person said people like it and would recommend it 🥵
Hey sweetwater. If y'all want the "chapter marker" thing in your videos timeline, try adding 0:00 to your timestamps as well. That tells youtube that you want the chapter markers. Great video.
I have an AT4040 and love it on guitars and vocals, it's really flat and accurate. However for me, the standouts in this video were the TF 29 and SV33. When mixed in the track they were a cut above the rest.
I'm glad there are also samples of speaking into each microphone. Many microphone reviews only sing into the mic when mics are used for spoken word just as much, so samples of spoken word are just as important.
Telefunken TF 29 really suprised me. I also like the Neumann TLM 103. It sounds really natural and effortless. The C414 is also a workhorse in a studio.
I've had an EV RE20 in my mic kit for 30+ years. Phenomenal! Great for vocals. Also ... I've used it as a kick drum mic on many occasions with excellent results. I started doing that when I saw a picture of Alan White (maybe Bill Brufford?) using one in his kick drum. It had to be great ... right? It is!
Such an incredible video. This has ALL the mics I've been looking at purchasing and I love that you have them in a mix as well. I've been tearing my hair out trying to find something comparing a ton of these in the same setting. THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!
Yep. Sits in the mix really well. Balanced through the midrange, naturally low on sibilance and plosives. One could always add a slight bit of upper air and more bottom, if needed. Listen to the body (chest voice) on the "ate" in "time to create." Much fuller than the others. Doesn't thin out. I'm wondering also if he was a bit closer to the mic on this take compared to the other mics. He might be a few inches further back on the others, increasing their high-mid/treble emphasis.
The Warm Audio WA-47 was my favorite on your voice for this "song". Sounded full and present and still clear. I have the SM7b and love it on my vocals. I also have two AT4040s. They are decent mics, but not my favorite on my vocals. :-) Great comparison video!

SamBrant Drums that’s the problem I have with every piece of gear... guitars, basses, amps, cabs, mics, synths, modules.... I’ll take them all please!!
The Manley mic sounded best IMO. Best balance of low, mids, and air. Of course all of them will turn out great sound with just a touch of processing. Wish I could afford the Manley.
I definitely liked the 1st two (Sure & EV) which I have the most experience with. But I was Impressed with the tubed mics with power supplies. I think you could hear a true difference in clarity. I was thinking about purchasing the Sure SM7B simply for its versatility and my previous experience with it in radio. I have a Sennheiser MK4 it’s pretty good for vocals but not quite the right sound I need for VO. I definitely wanna be able to record great vocals while playing guitar too.
I just bought a 414. Great mic and clearly very versatile. But that Warm Audio 47 was surprisingly good. A clear cut above and a lot cheaper than the Manely Reference. Not sure how many people listened to this comparison on computer speakers as opposed to good speakers or good headphones.
Very informative review thanks, although when you were introducing the Shure mic I lolled at the way it popped as you said "No need for another pop filter"

Nice to see so many options! Thanks! We've used the Shure SM58, AKG C3000B, Neumann TLM 102, Shure SM7B and Sennheiser e935 in our vocal recording process for our 1st two albums and the 3rd one we're currently recording. Even with just one singer, we find that microphones are like guitars, you can never have too many, as each one may fit a different song perfectly, depending on the style of song, type of singing and timbre we're looking for. Options are great!

Thank you for covering so many mics. I've been researching for a while now, trying to find the right Mic for my budget and needs. Really like Warm Audio but a little expensive for me. (Their add videos are great. I've actually started following several of the artists from their videos now) I would be interested in your opinion on the Studio Projects B-1 and B-3 mics. have you looked into the Neat King Bee? Considering your concerns about budget, you may want to. You'll be thoroughly surprised of how good this $130 mic sounds. Originally sold for $350 and you can still find reviews where people had thought that was an exceptional price point. If you can get past the look, I'd consider it.
You know the U87 probably are the most recorded vocal mike in the world and there´s a reason why. If it doesn´t sound good then maybe it needs to be cleaned, the preamp is a bad match, the acoustics are bad, or it doesn´t suit your voice.
I've since been using a TLM-49 and am finding it for what I need to be as good or better than my 87. I also experienced a vintage Sennheiser 409 recently in a recording of my guitar for my latest record. Along with a 37 and 67 the sound in combination was nothing less than phenomenally sublime. I still think modern 87s are way overrated.

To me, the Mojave and the Manley seemed exceptional on first listen, least harsh, smother highs and mids. Also like the AEA ribbons.
