Years ago I had a vocal coach that encouraged me to pull chest. I knew there had to be another way. I’m glad I stumbled across you about 5 months ago. Dont, im 57, and the "hoo"" "moh" thing works! It was when I hit a g that I felt something peculiar about that certain g different than the other g's even though it was the samee pitch. Once I relaxed the throat and pushed from the belly, took me about a month to get that, id say.

Whilst this is the strangest secret, it is the best secret, its exactly the placement needed for mixed voice. This video is gold dust, so so good. Getting that sound is key, It's not falsetto, its in between and the placement naturally happens, then just sing into that same placement and voila. There is also a slight air pressure you feel. Great Video.

tyler in your first mixed voice video ever the one from 4 years ago you begin by demonstrating head voice with a weee but when i try to emulate the sound it comes out breathy with no twang or nasality or any solid sound. How do i make it sound more like your’s from my breathy head voice. Also when you demonstrate falsetto in another one of your videos it’s really hard to emulate that too it just sounds super breathy when i do it. do you have any tips for working your head voice?
The oo is the position of covering already, so place the other vowels within the space of the oo

I like your videos. I want to know if you just feel that vertical sound going straight up or do you ever use a visual or anything else so you can make sure the voice is in the right placement. Like I've heard teachers talk about an elevator going up and down. Also is it easier to direct the sound towards the back half hard palate.
I could see how someone would use the elevator imagery, I don’t think I would describe my perceptions that way but it seems like a sound idea.
I would allow for variation along the palate depending on the vowel. The Oo feels in front of the back half of the palate, but I do tend to feel my Ah around that juncture (where the hard and soft palate meet). All the vowels are similar and slightly different at the same time.

The more videos I watch and more I come to sense around “mixed” voice it feels like it’s simply down to balance and vowel modification rather than a “special” thing we do with our voice. Narrowing that voice will get you into mixed voice more than anything

I have seen every mixed voice video on youtube so far , been working daily for hours and trying to find a placement where the mixed voice comes up and I am still not getting it .....
I just wanna ask you, does compression (too tight/too breathy sound) help for accessing the mixed voice ?
Also if someone found their mixed voice the break between registers will disappear instantly or you have to build what they call a 'bridge'?

You still need to build the bridge. The placement is where this video secret is. If you are making that noise in the video, you will feel a shift, just feel where the placement is prior, then do that switch upwards like he says in the video, you will feel the shift into what feels like a different part (Don't do that sound in head voice or falsetto and it needs to be forward, don't raise your soft pallet). Also try and do a breath stop initially and then do this video, It will keep your vocal chords together. Most people when they are trying to mix, don't keep their chords together and it simply introduces air. Remember, Mix Voice may not sound like what you here hear initially. You may find its a very heady mix, but it comes in time. I had to do around 3 to 4 months of the exercises on Tylers Masterclass before I got a better sounding mix. I don't compress, the air pressure sorts itself out once you are in the placement said in this video, you will feel that once you are in mix. This is only my personal view on it.

@@frankproject8207 There is a few things you need to think off. 1) Is the Mix Placed in the Right Place. Simple Test, Make a Ahh in chest voice, you will feel it more towards the back of your mouth. Now make a Ahhh in head voice, it will feel more to the front. Now do what Tyler said in this video, do you feel it coming from the middle upper part of your mouth. If you don't, slightly drop your Jaw, don't over extend it to bring in tension, until you have the right placement. As you slowly open your jaw in mix, you will here changed and feel it moving forwards and backwards 2) Do exercises to Strength your chest voice. Remember mix is a Balance, if you have a weaker chest voice, and stronger head voice, your mix is going to be more head dominant. Plenty of Exercises for this online, Do them for 30 minutes a day, for me took about 8 weeks. 3) Practice mixing each day, keep doing it over and over, muscle memory will kick in, and as you strengthen your chest voice more, you will here the tone change. Record yourself weekly and review changes. 4) Support support support, then check for tension as your doing it. I'm 53, 18 months ago I couldn't sing past a G4, today I can belt a D5. 5) Ultimately, if you want a slow fix, do what I said above, quicker fix would be to book 4 lessons, a singing teacher will correct you a damn site quicker than the trial and error that the 4 points above will give you, money permitting.

So nice tyler 👍 job thankyou it works 🙏🏻i get so good that the nasty church choir leader has to stop being stinking covert, narc, very sneaky person that thinks she’s got the pastors finger wrapped 😅around her. If that makes any sense I had to work for almost 4 years to learn rhythm guitar. She gave me 3 to 4 songs new per week and then I lost my voice because I was focusing on being a guitarist for the group and she kept telling me you got to learn how to belt and my voice was injured not to mention my heart was broken because of the circumstances and I left and the pastor has been lied to by you know who😮
Mix volume? Is it possible to do this at a lower volume? When you 'open up' in your video demo's it always seem so huge and loud. I'm struggling trying to create this mix sound and I think its mostly due to trying to not be so loud. I guess its easier to create if its loud? Can you do a low volume mix?
Yes absolutely it can be at lower volumes.
It’s so funny I have people comment on my videos tell me it sounds like a whimpy head voice and then I have people say it sounds huge and too loud.
I think the microphone is amazing but it masks things a little from how they actually are. In this video I was not singing incredibly loud at all. But the quality of the voice is full or chest like.
The more I learn and practice the more I think mix-voice is a bad word to use.
Mainly because it’s NOT a vocal register. It’s basically Head-voice with deeper vocal closure & with mixture of mouth resonance, giving some lower depth.
I now prefer to think of it as chest and head voice (like in Old Classical terms) and then find that gradual blend through the bridge.
Then fine tune the head-voice sound/resonance to be strong (aka Mix-voice) light reinforced falsetto (aka pure head-voice) and then falsetto. (Airy or very light head-voice)
It’s just the very term “Mix-voice” leads many to believe there some secret 3rd area, or resonate chamber they need to find. This simply doesn’t exist!
So just for those of you out there confused, “mix-voice is basically a mixture of resonance between your mouth, pharynx and nasal cavity” = A Balanced Voice.
I disagree. I like the word mix because to me it's what it sounds like and perceptually seems like. To me it almost does feel like a new place that I didn't know was there. that is the whole point of this video. Classical singers used to think of the full voice in the head and many other terms to describe what I am talking about here. But hey, at the end of the day you can all it whatever you want.
Also, some of the recent research by Christian Herbst would suggest that mix voice is indeed actually a register. There is so much to learn and so much that is not fully understood yet.
And, the way I teach it is not what you described as mouth resonance mixed with pharyngeal resonance. It’s the shifting from the first resonance or formant as the primary resonator to the second resonance or formant which boosts the third harmonic as the primary resonator. There are vocal cord adjustments that happen as well along with a higher contact time of the cords. That’s how I teach it.
@@tylerwysong Yeah, I guess it’s all depends on our own experiences and knowledge of the voice. I found my “mix-voice” years ago after practicing “Singing Success” and “Mastering Mix.”
So the thought of mixed voice as being a blend of chest and head-voice did work for me, just not without months of confusion. I know most people that struggle with finding their mix-voice because of this 3rd vocal register concept/belief. But I guess it’s still a better way of thinking than the “stretching chest voice up into your head resonance” approach. (aka pulling up instead of pressing down)
I just find the old school way of thinking “chest & head resonance simpler for people to grasp. (Because we can all find chest & head)
This way students are not trying to pull chest voice up, or squeeze to push their voice into some imaginary resonance space that doesn’t even exist.
But I guess different approaches work for different people and finding the one that works for us/them is the most important thing at the end of the day.

@@jazznotes3802 I can appreciate the ideas you are putting forth here. However the “resonant spaces” really exist in our mind. It’s bizarre. But they are vivid. What I am proposing is there is another “space” (at least perceptually not physically) that most of us miss sometimes all of our lives. It’s hard to comprehend until you experience it for yourself.
@@tylerwysong Sorry, but there is two (3 if including the pharynx) very physical spaces above the vocal folds. But obviously we’re not just singing in the pharynx for mix-voice.
Would you not agree that the resonance shifts (sound waves) out of the mouth and up into the nasal cavity when in a mix-voice. Then the higher we sing that resonance continues to shift from mouth into the nasal cavity, gradually leaving the vocal weight of chest voice?
I’m not just talking about purely sympathetic resonance, (to be clear) but the physical space that truly exists with the head cavity.
@@jazznotes3802 I would say it feels like that perceptually. But that is not what’s happening physically. The nose is not a resonator, it’s actually an anti resonator.

I think both! Ha! But I’m not a true baritone. I can kind of fake a baritone sound.

Def not chest resonance. The voice pops up in the head somewhere. But there is still a little edge to it preventing it from being full falsetto. I know it can be frustrating. Don’t give up. You’ll figure it out.

That’s very common! Teenage years the voice is still developing a lot! Just keep going! It gets better and better.
