    7:35 Belt vs 9:37 + 10:02 heavy mix
    (correct me if I'm wrong Tyler) For anyone trying to hear/understand the difference, Listen to the shape and character of the vowel when jumping between the two examples, and the quality of breathiness in the belt vs the mix. The mix sounds more controlled/ less forced because there are less muscles being recruited/ the muscles are more relaxed and in a shape that allows the first formant to correspond healthily with the first two harmonics. explained here Formants and Harmonics ruclips.net/video/I_0drOESUSI/видео.html
    This way you don't have to try and force the muscles to try and keep the first formant boosting the second harmonic and sing with tension. Instead, different shapes and muscle tension being created by the tongue, larynx, vocal tract etc and air flow
    lead to the first formant sitting between the first two harmonics and you have a healthy mix that is more versatile than a pure belt, but it takes practice to allow you voice to do that.
    I'm finding the mix is more possible when you learn to believe your voice can sound like that without needing to push, and you can avoid tensing the muscles you are used to when belting, seems to me to be about doing more with less but if you panic and doubt yourself you will tense and fall back on heavy belting. It takes practice, like walking a tight rope/ slackline, you can't muscle your way to balance and ease.
    That's where the puffy cheek or flow phonation exercises and pinky finger biting come into play, training the system so that only the right muscles and shapes are used.
    It's awesome learning all this, it's pretty new to me and was confusing at first (still can be at times) but really powerful.
    Love the talks at the end as always too. smart hard work, amen haha.
    great to see more content from you, looking forward to this year Tyler, thanks. Let's gooo

    @5:16 or there abouts, this is where working with Tyler is so rewarding.
    After probably 6-10months of deliberate training with Tyler’s method, I can sing a D ABOVE high C, more reliably than what I used to sing a G-A above middle C like.
    Does it take more effort??, yes. But it’s easier. I know that’s a hard concept to grasp if you havnt been there, but trust me. For those out there who are just starting, at whatever age, keep going. ☺️

    • @AsharpVocalAcademy
      @AsharpVocalAcademy 3 года назад +2

      @@musicval7462 Well I started out by doing everything completely wrong when I was young. So much tension in my neck and face even when talking. Also I had tension under my chin when I would breathe. How sad is that haha.
      Everyone is different, but I would start off by working on unhealthy neck or face strain, tongue tension, jaw tension etc. most humans deal with that at some stage. Once that starts to ease off, long before it’s gone completely, you’ll find the voice feels a bit more floaty on its own.
      Also, if you’re serious about it, get Tyler’s mix voice course. If you stick to the first lesson part for just 2-3 weeks, you’ll start to notice new tonal quality’s popping up on random notes in your range :D

    Tyler, I am so frustrated. I studied classically in college and recieved a vocal performance degree. I have been singing professionally for 19 years, in NYC, at theaters around the country and on cruise ships. In college I was just learning to sing in what we called opera head voice. I was just grasping it when I finished college and was able to sustain a powerful B natural at my senior recital. Once I started working, it was never singing classical music and I slowly began to lose my ability to "mix" and began extending my chest voice. I also sang a lot of rock music and it 2014 I was cast in Rock of Ages as Stacee Jaxx. I began sort of screaming in my falsetto during the 7 month contract and by the time that was done, I had all but forgotten how to get into that lovely operatic mix that you so easily can access. For the next four or five years my technique continued to deteriorate and now I max out of a G natural. I am currently working for a major cruise company and I love my job. I'm making great money, but I have to sing high A naturals in a few numbers and I've having a lot of trouble and sounding pretty bad. I've been trying to get into my mix up there, but it's not working. It flips into an airy and difficult falsetto. It doesn't song healthy or good. I like the puffed cheek exercise, but the head voice seems so weak. It doesn't have that "ping" and even on mic it sounds weak. I'm really struggling. Do you think I have damaged my voice, or do you think I'm technically approaching something incorrectly. Obviously you would have to hear me to tell, but I'm just curious if you have encountered anyone like me. I feel like I am popping up there, but it sounds weak and closed off. I also get stuck in my nose a bit. I'm going to get your mix masterclass. But I just wonder if it is even possible for me at this point to rehabilitate my voice. Ugh

    • @vocalbooth8585
      @vocalbooth8585 4 месяца назад

      It’s totally possible. You just need to stop singing for a while. Let your voice rest and reset. Give your vocal cords a chance to come back to the feeling of a lighter coordination. When you push chest for too long, over too long of a period, your voice just doesn’t want to balance anymore.
      A good ‘mix’ is mainly head voice anyway IMO. So if you’re having a problem finding the coordination and want to make a start, see if you can find a light pianissimo head voice and start leaning into it. As non-airy as possible.

  • @achyutarjun

  • @corystajduhar

    I agree that belting and mixing are different. They sound different and are produced differently. Why would we even use different terms if belting was also just singing high notes in a mix or loud mix. Your examples were good. I use a belt for maybe a couple of notes at the most in certain songs for intensity and will mix like you did for most of the really high notes for intensity. I can belt a G4, but consider higher notes than that a mix. Certain vowels work to belt and others end up creating a mix. I can mix up to an F5, but would never call C5-F4 a true belt. It's definitely a mix. It's odd that so many videos say they show singers "belting," but they are mostly just singing a mix. I even watch belting instruction videos and they're just singing a loud and bright mix. I'm glad you recognized the differences. I feel and hear them so it's frustrating when the terms are used interchangeably. Lots of mixed sounds can be more closed like you demonstrated and even use "cover," while actual belting is wider and forward. I like your videos. They confirm a lot of my conclusions. There are so many schools of thought and techniques, but I also realize that it's all about the desired sound and what gets you to your destination and most efficiently without causing unintended problems. Good work!

    • @tylerwysong
      @tylerwysong  2 года назад

      Yes I totally agree! That’s why I love the formant and harmonics because it gives us something to literally point too instead of getting stuck in a terminology minefield. There is a lot of perception deception that goes on when singing so it’s understandable that there are so many differing optimism’s and schools of thought.

    This is really difficult for me to get by. I'm originally a Countertenor and was trained in the head voice. I eventually learned how to mix some of that by putting more resonance in the mask and the breathing support to do High Tenor. Unfortunately, I can only do mixed voice. I cannot do belt at all but I have an overall bright voice for an adult male (late 30s in age, at this point). When I sing warm Tenor, my voice is light/airy/raspy but when I sing High Tenor, it's more clearer and technical but can sound really young above a C#5.

But is that what you're referring to as the type of belting that you'd be against?

      Nah theres more to singing than just the high notes. I had those things before I even had a vocal coach. For example I'm terrible at riffs and runs. I think its important to learn both. So you have options I wouldnt really ever use a C5 chest belt though I can it doesn't fit the music i sing which is pop and rnb. Where as mixed is usually more used in those genres. I found a stronger mix through belting.

After singing for 4 years it's only been within the last year that everything I've learned is paying off. I've gotten a vocal coach only recently because I'm getting closer to being a good singer but my goal has always been to be a great singer. @MinorSingingAirhead Can you upload a demo of your singing? I actually like the belting aproach and raising chest voice higher more than what many teachers call "mix". By doing that I'm able to sing rock ballads that I can't by mixing. What kind of music do you sing? Because I'm not sure I can actually use mix voice to sing rock/metal songs, at least from G4 up to D5, for me it needs to be belting. I'm a tenor btw.
