Just did this job on a 94 Camry and it was difficult but manageable. Hats off to anyone that does it, be proud of your work and remember to take a break when things aren’t going your way. Thanks for the video!!!
I am impressed by the professional details, like keeping the bolt clean, the loosened fuel line clean with a clean plastic bag, etc. Also great is Peter did not go too fast. Excellent video! Thank you, Peter!!
You are the most calming mechanic I have ever heard. Thank you because I usually scream at the car when I have to work on it. I think you helped my anxiety. 😂😂😂
Two tricks for you. 1)The nut underneath can be hard to loosen. Use your 14 and 19 at the same time underneath the filter leave a 3" gap and squeeze them together, works like a charm, do the same to for tightening the last few turns. 2) put a line on top of the upper screw that aligns with the hole where the gas goes through, there is a small adjustment possible when you re-install and that way you can make sure the max fuel flow goes through.
what do you mean use your 14 and 19 at the same time im guessing wrenches why not just use his method of one I would use 2 the 14 and 19 if i would understand what your saying... are you saying both wrenches fit the flare nut on the bottom or use a 19 on top and a 14 on the bottom like hes doing im really confused
Stating the obvious that you didn't align the bracket on top for the gas line and didn't seem to use the two new gasket washers. But thanks for a very detailed explanation of all possible problems r/r the gas filter. Also, like the comment below about marking the top bolt so you can get maximum flow of gas.
I was going to say the same thing, The fuel line bracket at the top was not correctly installed. It needs to be rotated 180 degrees. Also, I had to turn the volume down at watch at double speed...
This is a great demonstration. You even show which direction to turn the wrench to disconnect the old filter which is important in order to avoid bending the fuel line. I would only add that a 14mm flare nut wrench helps too because it can grip the bottom nut better.
This is by FAR the best and most hilarious toyota fuel filter replacement video on internet. (russian accent) Before wrenching on the filter, on some cars you may also remove the EFI fuse (fuel pump fuse) and crank the ignition- which should remove fuel pressure without starting the car.
Thanks Peter, you made it look easy but this can be one hell of a difficult job. Just got through removing the old fuel filter on my '97 Celica. The lower fuel line was very very tough to remove, even with the recommended flare wrench. As soon as it stops raining will be out there to finish tightening up the new one, praying it does not leak because this seems to be a common issue on Toyota forum boards! If it does I will need to think of a plan B. How Toyota think this is a lifetime filter is beyond me, my car has 231,000 miles, for kicks I cut open my old filter and it was filthy inside, not even sure whether it was even the original one. How the fuel made it's way through the dirt and grime is beyond me!
Got it the bottom bolt loose Peter. Finally. Went and bought a set of line wrenches, PB BLASTER,and a very small wire brush and just kept spraying and cleaning rusted bottom 14mm bolt. Lined up the 14mm line wrench and the 19mm that's part of the fuel filter. Off set both wrenches about 8 degrees and squeezed very hard and pop it came loose. Yes💯
Thanks for the video -- it is very helpful and shares some good principles that can be applied more universally. I do want to mention that the filter's upper fuel line guides were installed opposite the fuel line. IOW, the filter was installed 180 degrees out from an optimal install. The upper line is supposed to pass through the "U" shape (that looks like a large gun sight). I'm not sure how much it matters, though.
Thank you so much for your video. I have been working on my Toyota Solara for a couple of weeks now all on my own, which means I watch a lot of videos on each part I am replacing... spark plugs and wires, MAS, ignition coils... your video is the best one I have watched yet!!! you were so thorough I really appreciate the detail you went into. It is really nice to have a mechanic be so thorough on here :) and as everyone else said, I love your accent :) great job!!!!
This how-to video is quite good: it is thorough, well shot with a very steady camera, and well instructed, giving lots of good advice for best results. It it both easy to see all of the parts and bolts and easy to hear the instructions (Our guide's accent may be a tad challenging for some but I enjoyed it.) My one, very minor criticism is that it could be edited a little tighter to make the video move along more quickly. If you want to learn how to replace a fuel filter on a 1991 to 2002 Camry, you couldn't do much better.
It may also pay to check that you have the filter facing the correct way when you put it back in the bracket and tightening the 10mm bolt, so that the fuel line can rest on the little cut-out that's made for it at the top of the filter... (like it was on the original filter before it was removed).
I wish I had that calm of yours to do mechanics Peter, very funny accent and great video, very helpful to replace my filter👍🏼 Cheers from California USA from a Mexican 😀
The position is wrong. Under the label there is anothet bump that position the filter 180 degrees so the fuel pipe is holded by these two upper flaps. These flaps holds the metal pipe in the right position so the fuel bolt (the one that has a hole in the center and a hole through) keep aligned with the hole. Thanks for the video. It was very useful.
2nd video of yours I've watched in 15 minutes and you do NOT know - as I do NOT know or remember - exactly where the 2 copper compression rings are placed. Everybody is vague, wrong or just skips over it! The best tip was a guy said he eyeballed where the banjo bolt orifice lined up with the fuel inlet and placed the rings accordingly to best make a smooth straight flow. I even have the official repair manual and it is not covered (but, I'm gonna go check again...)!
Always do bottom first, its hard to get out , and can twist the line. Keep bracket on and top line for more strength....to be honest it is in a bad spot i have cut one off before and put in barb and rubber hoses instead... Much easier to replace.
I just got a 1996 Toyota Camry with a 2.2, 211,xxx miles and still going strong but due to some signs of neglect, I plan to change the fuel filter along with a few other worn parts to keep it running good. Is there anything else I should look into? No check engine light, runs strong and quiet with lots of power when driving
Great detailed and well explained video. Unless I missed, aren't you supposed to replace the two metallic gaskets (bronze or brass I guess) with new ones when reconnecting the outlet fuel tube and bolt to the filter . By the way I like the sockets you are using. Who makes them and how can I get a set. Thanks.
Hello sir, most factory instructions suggest pulling the power supply from the fuel pump either the relay at the fuse box or disconnecting from the fuel pump. Maybe you did do this and I didn't catch that. Have a good day.
I didn't see him install it either...as careful as he was about safety & all else! I don't think one goes on the bottom/Inlet side as the gas line is flared at the end...but on top for sure. But then again, there always are 2 compression rings included with a new filter kit...so if you know for sure where the 2nd one goes I'd be a thankin' ya!
I got a 94 celica with a similar filter placement. I installed an OEM replacement filter but when I got everything tightened back up,the fuel line on the bottom leaks. any suggestions?
great video.....I just have to say, I'm sure when you had to go to tools with more torque it was like.....Camera off....cuss for 5 minutes trying to loosen it.....then the camera comes back on with it ready to go....lol....at least thats how my car repairs go.
Working on changing out the fuel filter now. I just took off the top bolt of the fuel filter. No problems. I took gas cap off. Now how do I get the bottom bolt off? The car will run fine for 40 minutes or longer or less. Then the problem occurs. The car will cut out for a second. Hiccup. It might do it several times or just once. Peter I put one bottle of dry gas in the tank. Also I put fuel injection cleaner in the gas tank also. No luck. I sprayed fuel injection cleaner in the intake with the rubber part of. Wiped the inside of the housing out and cleaned the butterfly times. Used more than a spray can of cleaner in the intake area. It's t process of elimination. I checked the spark plugs and in number one cylinder the oil is bypassing the oring seal, but no oil is on the electrode. It's nice and clean. But I changed all four plugs out. Still have to change valve cover gasket and oring seals. The problem does not seem like it electrical. No backfiring. And the car never completely shuts down. But I want to fix the problem. There's no warning lights on in the dash. ANY IDEA PETER WHAT THE PROBLEM MIGHT BE, PLEASE!!!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME!!!

Hi Peter I'm stuck. I have everything off to get the fuel filter off my 2000 2.2l Camry . The top bolt came off with much strength from my old arms with penetrating oil. But the bottom nut on the filter is rusted on. After much penetrating oil and a open end wrench the nut is still rusted on. Please send me some ideas. I bought some tiny wire brushes in which I'm going to use with more penetrating oil. I don't know what else to do???? YOUR IDEAS PLEASE ☹️

Peter,do you know the technical name of the line that runs from the the fuel rail to the filter?mines split and dumping gas but I can't find any info on it anywhere?
why didn`t you line the fuel filter up properly ? on the top there is a bracket that is part of the fuel filter housing, you have it facing the fender not towards the engine where it is supposed to go to cradle the fuel line and position the line as the maker intended. look at how the fuel line was attached at the beginning of the video ,then where it is at the end with the new filter.

I have a question. I changed the fuel filter for my toyota camry 1998, but when I tried to disconnect from the metal pipe which is the input, then semi-twisted the metal pipe that connects the chassis. after that my car turn on normaly after some starts, but my question is... how can this semi-twisted pipe (input pipe) affect my car's performance , so far it turns on normally but t th e metal pipe or hose or whatever u wanna called it is semi-twisted because I tried to unplug it from the input pipe..... any suggestions. advices. .. Im open to take them....Thanks
@@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor Every source I've read or watched agrees; always use new washers. The reason is that the pressure has already flattened the old washer to the maximum and the new washer seals by the same process that flattens it. In other words old washers have outlived their usefulness.
I am a mechanic also and my specialty are simi trucks...I got a 98 Camery 2.2...Theirs maybe 2 bad gallons of gas in it...When I have the filter off can I just turn on the car and the fuel pump gets the gas out from that point?
WRONG both the gaskets go on top of the filter (fuel out) around the fuel inlet hose opening, top and bottom of it. No copper gaskets on bottom of filter torque bottom 30-34 nm top 29 nm.
Bro I tried this today and when I turned it on it leaked mind you the two cooper washers that came with it I only installed one thinking it was one for top and bottom I guess bottom side don’t tKe one top side takes two. But how would I know if when I took it apart it was only one so
I also worry about using a non-Toyota filter for something like this. They look the same on the outside be we don't know the quality of the filter paper inside. compared to Toyota's filter which costs 2 or 3 times more.
Peter Finn I used a brand called NPN. Made in Japan. It even came with a new mounting bracket. Apparently they are an original part supplier (at least for fuel filters) for several Japanese auto companies including Toyota. They should last the same amount of time.
Damn is it really that difficult for the video to be 36 minutes long? I had a TS Astra, all I did was unscrew it off the underside of the vehicle and pop the ends off and swap. I thought being an older Camry, something like the fuel filter woulda been an easy job :( I'm going to pay someone to do this for me lol
Any luck with your car? You can take the fuel filter off and have someone crank it to confirm that the fuel pump is working. Obviously put the one end into a glass bottle to catch any gas that comes out... this is just to make sure its pumping and not just making noise like it is... if you do have gas come out, id check to see if theres spark.... take a plug off the spark plug and put it next to grounded area... if you have spark then it could be spark plugs.. or even the wires...are they old?

I have a question. I changed the fuel filter for my toyota camry 1998, but when I tried to disconnect from the metal pipe which is the input, then semi-twisted the metal pipe that connects the chassis. after that my car turn on normaly after some starts, but my question is... how can this semi-twisted pipe (input pipe) affect my car's performance , so far it turns on normally but t th e metal pipe or hose or whatever u wanna called it is semi-twisted because I tried to unplug it from the input pipe..... any suggestions. advices. .. Im open to take them....Thanks
I think of course I did it wrongly because it was my first time, I put too much force for unplugging the input pipe
u did the best video
Hello, Thanks for comment. :-)
OK, one more thing; I did not see any washers being used on the new filter. Did it work without the washers?
Yes, I used old washers
@@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor Every source I've read or watched agrees; always use new washers. The reason is that the pressure has already flattened the old washer to the maximum and the new washer seals by the same process that flattens it. In other words old washers have outlived their usefulness.
Excelete video!!!
alevtx Thank You for your feedback.
Put in the filter backwards if nobody noticed
great video very helpfull
Thank You for feedback. :-)
ive loosened the bottom one but I cant pull the filter off. The bolt wont loosen anymore either. Really need help
I am a mechanic also and my specialty are simi trucks...I got a 98 Camery 2.2...Theirs maybe 2 bad gallons of gas in it...When I have the filter off can I just turn on the car and the fuel pump gets the gas out from that point?
I really dont want to drop the tank...
Good idea, please test.
You sound like my brother-in-law. Are you my brother-in-law?
Is he?
Great job
Thank You. 👍
where is the vacuum hose of the gas pressure regulator connected? I read that in the intake manifold but I can not find the hole
Hi, there are rubber hoses in fuel injection system. Unplug one and connect tester. And I will do new video too.
Wait a minute what about the copper crush washers. You don't have any installed??
You are right, they are important
If they are important, you should include them in the video.
WRONG both the gaskets go on top of the filter (fuel out) around the fuel inlet hose opening, top and bottom of it. No copper gaskets on bottom of filter torque bottom 30-34 nm top 29 nm.
Thanks Sir 👍
Hi is there. I don't see you removing the air box first. Why?
Thank you. Good comment
Is that a 1/2 inch ratchet you are using on a 10mm bolt?
Yes
How do you get leverage on a super tight inlet tube?
I use Two tools
WOW amezn👍👍👍
Thanks 👍😀
Bro I tried this today and when I turned it on it leaked mind you the two cooper washers that came with it I only installed one thinking it was one for top and bottom I guess bottom side don’t tKe one top side takes two. But how would I know if when I took it apart it was only one so
👍Thanks for comment
Please respond. I'm doing the filter and the bottom bolt is still stuck snd won't come off. Here we are 5 hours later and nothing. PLEASE HELP!
Hi, you need a very good big long tools 👍
@@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor Thank you for your response. Would you please elaborate?
SO DAM COMPLICATED SO THE DEALER IS THE ONLY ONE WHO CARGES 400 DOLLARS TO CHANGE IT.
YEARS AGO YOU COULD DO YOUR OWN WORK ON THE CAR
Wouldn't it be easier to leave the bracket attached to the car and just loosen the bolt that keeps the holds the filter tight and then pull it up?
DEE K I found out that you can't pull it through but it makes sense to loosen the bottom screw and the side screw while still attached to the frame.
sorry i couldn't really catch it with the accent what tools sizes, etc am i going to need?
Aaron Green Hi. It is 19 mm socket.
I also worry about using a non-Toyota filter for something like this. They look the same on the outside be we don't know the quality of the filter paper inside. compared to Toyota's filter which costs 2 or 3 times more.
rkgsd Hello, you are right. The Toyota original part only last 15 years. These copy products last one year.
Peter Finn I used a brand called NPN. Made in Japan. It even came with a new mounting bracket. Apparently they are an original part supplier (at least for fuel filters) for several Japanese auto companies including Toyota. They should last the same amount of time.
Thank you! =)
+ExoticSpeedLovers Thank You.
Nice but you left something VERY IMPORTANT: the size of the top bolt !
Thank You for comment. Best Regard Peter Finn
19 mm
Urs
Yes
19?
Better use a flare nut wrench on the bottom, do you DONT want to bend that tube :)
Thanks for Your comment. :-)
100 percently similar!
what size socket do I need for the top bolt? 15, 16, 17 mm?
17 mm
K
K
What is the torque on the banjo bolt?
20 Nm
Thank you.
Noted 👍
I'm having problems with my Camry 00 will not start & I have changed fuel pump multiple times...the pump comes on but no start
Hi, have you check your spark plugs. Are they wet ?
Any luck with your car? You can take the fuel filter off and have someone crank it to confirm that the fuel pump is working. Obviously put the one end into a glass bottle to catch any gas that comes out... this is just to make sure its pumping and not just making noise like it is... if you do have gas come out, id check to see if theres spark.... take a plug off the spark plug and put it next to grounded area... if you have spark then it could be spark plugs.. or even the wires...are they old?
i need a video for a 93 camry v6, the engine compartment is totally different, fuel filter is in the shittiest spot ever, not even close to this easy!
+Jared Fournier Yes, difficult.
did you torque the top bolt
Yes
what amount?
should you disconnect battery also ?
Yes
Yes
K
The inlet flange on the filter is too long for the fule line to seat into the filter and gas leaked all over.
Thanks for info 👍
what happened to copper washers?
Ok 😀👍
Does this help gas mileage?
Engine runs better
Night turn to day lol... helpful tho
Thank You. :-)
