  • "What good is sitting alone In your room?
    Come hear the music play.
Life is a Cabaret, old chum,
    Come to the Cabaret.
Put down the knitting, The book and the broom.
    It's time for a holiday.
Life is a Cabaret, old chum
    Come to the Cabaret.
Come taste the wine, Come hear the band.
    Come blow a horn, Start celebrating;
Right this way, Your table's waiting.
What good's permitting Some prophet of doom
    To wipe every smile away.
Life is a Cabaret, old chum,
    So Come to the Cabaret!
I used to have a girlfriend Known as Elsie,
With whom I shared A four sordid rooms in Chelsea
She wasn't what you'd call a blushing flower...
As a matter of fact she rented by the hour.
The day she died the neighbors Came to snicker:
"Well, that's what comes from too much pills and liquor."
But when I saw her laid out like a Queen,
She was the happiest... corpse... I'd ever seen.
I think of Elsie to this very day.
I remember how she'd turn to me and say:
"What good is sitting all alone in you room?
    Come hear the music play.
Life is a Cabaret, old chum,
    Come to the Cabaret.
And as for me, And as for me,
I made my mind up, back in Chelsea,
When I go, I'm going like Elsie.
Start by admitting, From cradle to tomb
    It isn't that a long a stay.
Life is a Cabaret, old chum,
It's only a Cabaret, old chum
    And I love a Cabaret.

I believe that, with this performance, Liza Minelli stepped out of her mothers shadow and proved that she was an artist that didn't need a famous mother, and that she was a singularly unique talent

Judy was NOT a call girl like Elsie and didn't die from too much pills and liquor but an incautious overdose.it looks as if they meant Liza to be singing about Judy but far from truth! Like Elsie Sally was going to live the rest of her on her own terms.Incidentally Liza is brilliant in this song! Look at glistening tears when she talk sings the line "Life is a.... Cabaret old chum! Then with arm out and fingers wiggling " come to the Cabaret " just heartbreaking. She deserved that Oscar

The song has nothing to do with her mother, Judy. The lyrics were written by Fred Ebb with composer John Kander for the 1966 musical Cabaret, based on the play "I Am A Camera" which in turn was adapted from "Goodbye To Berlin" by Christopher Isherwood.

LIza's performance is one of the greatest musical moments captured on film.
Others: 2. Judy's Get Happy, 3. The Man That Got Away, 4. Over the Rainbow,
    5. Gene Kelly's Singin' in the Rain,
    6. the Ensemble rendition of Tonight in West Side Story,
    7. Julie Andrews and the kids in Do Ra Me in The Sound of Music,
    8. Barbara Streisand's Don't Rain on My Parade in Funny Girl,
    9. Fred and Ginger's Night and Day in Top Hat,
    10. Fred and Eleanor Powell's Begin the Beguine in the Broadway Melody of 1940,
That's my Top Ten. What's yours?

+Steve T. 1.Judy's The Man That Got Away. 2. Astaire and Charisse Dancing in the Dark from "The Band Wagon." 3. "The Broadway Melody/Ballet" from "Singing in the Rain." 4. "Cool" and the ensemble dancing from "West Side Story." 5. Astaire and Powell's "Beging the Beguine." 6. The American in Paris Ballet. 7. Judy's The Trolley Song from "Meet Me in St. Louis." 8. Fred and Ginger's Let's Face the Music and Dance from "Follow the Fleet." 9. Judy's "Over the Rainbow." 10. The last 20 minutes from "Stormy Weather" with Lena Horne singing the title tune, the Katherine Dunham dancers, Bill Robinson's dancing, the one of a kind Cab Calloway and the amazing dancing of the Nicholas Brothers. We share some similarities and you have good taste my friend.

Begin the Beguine, both the Trolley Song and have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Singing in the Rain, and Somewhere Over the Rainbow all bring tears. Joy, melancholy for a lost era, and then I watch a Thin Man movie and things are better. Thank you two for the chance to share!
