- I occasionally get comments on why people do calisthenics when they could just go to the gym.
There are many different answers for this, but I give mine in this video. While there are many modalities in fitness, I've always felt that it was special that we have the tools to get fitter and stronger attached to us.

Because it doesn't just improve the muscles, but the joints, and the ligaments and reduces cartilage deterioration

I love that all I need for it is my own body. Sometimes, I'm just raising my heart rate or needing to be present in my body. I don't always need weights
I mean a pull up bar is more expensive than weights
Also gravity but to be fair can take that for granted unless you’re an astronaut
Raising your heart rate is just cardio (by definition). Calisthenics are exercises that USE weight, it just happens to be your body weight. They're functionally no different than any other exercise, but very limited in the weight that you can use and the muscles that you can train. There are so many muscle groups that are very difficult or downright impossible to train with calisthenics, that your own body is DEFINITELY not all you need. That's why gym equipment exists. Because it makes training accessible, easy, safe and optimal.

And even when I got one for my home, I made it from scraps with my dad to fit my needs
Also, don't forget that weights are used for different things from what a pull up bar is used for and this is both a pro and a con.
Weights don't allow you to do same things as a pull up bar (for example, decompress your spine), but they allow you to do more exercises, at a cost of eventually needing to get more, until it's unreasonable, and space in your home.

I don't wanna pay to go to the gym when calisthenics can give me the strength I need. I've been following your workout routine for a few months now and I feel amazing. I still haven't gotten to full pushups, etc., but I'm hoping I get there. Thanks Hampton
Now I have just mostly trained weights but two year ago I couldn’t do one push up now I can do 30 you can get there!
I've moved on from practicing his calisthenics routine to weight lifting after many months of following it, but I started with wall push ups as well and was able to get to full push ups around 6ish months in! Of course everyone will progress in unique ways and timeframes, but just commenting to give you the validation that you got this! Keep pushing!

Hi Hampton! I'm very fit for my age (maybe fit for most ages!), but for most of my life I've focused on distance running. I've been working your program for the past year and it has made me stronger and more confident in my movements. This is important as I age - improving bone health and mobility. Thanks for making a program for all of us!
I find that body weight exercises give me good insight into my overall fitness. Is my balance good? my focus? strength? If I'm stiff and achy, gentle and slow body weight movements help ease my discomfort.
Using any sort of equipment makes it easier to miss the cues that give me insight into my current physical state. Do I use other things? Sure, but when I really want to check in with myself, body weight movement is the way to go, usually the slower the better. Lots of useful feedback helps me plot the track forward.
Last month I started actually following your app, it’s been a game changer. I’m middle aged, was overweight, and generally unfit but going to a gym and lifting weights isn’t for me. Learning a few exercises, allowed me to start on a path of fitness. I started to see progress pretty quickly and your app moved me right along to a harder progression. Combined with watching what I eat I’ve lost weight and feel stronger. I will absolutely share this information with people around me and be a multiplier of your mission to help people get fit!

calisthenics was a great start for me, it's what got me from unfit to somewhat fit, it also made me realize that i like challenging myself then found that lifting weights was prefered for me overall, if i didn't know about calisthenics i don't think i would've ever started working out at all (my introduction to calisthenics was actually your video about pushups progression lol, i started with that then added squats, situps and other basic movements, it took a long time to be able to do everything in good form but it was more than worth it, one of the best decisions ive made in my life probably)
Hampton, you're such an inspiration brother. Stumbling on your channel a few years back, it is as good then with your energy and patience as it is now with some humble wisdom to boot.

I agree, not that working out with weights is bad in any regard, but calisthenics are very functional, and like you said, it definitely is an art.
I want to say thank you for your program! I bought the book after having my daughter, needing a simple way to recover and rebuild strength after a difficult pregnancy. I have nerve damage in my limbs and struggle with balance and strength because of it, and your workouts have helped me to not only heal my core after having a baby, but gain mobility, strength, and balance I didnt have before. I'm so thankful for you, I can fit these workouts into my day as a busy mom and adjust as needed. God bless you!
While I haven't followed your program for quite a while now as I eventually moved on to lifting weights after many months of calisthenics, I will say I'm still immensely grateful that you give us access to it. I might eventually go back to calisthenics once I've gotten a bit further in lifting, but even if I don't, your routine is what got me started on training and fitness and made the fitness community much more approachable to me than it initially seemed. It gave me the discipline and drive I needed. Despite switching programs, ever since starting with hybrid calisthenics, I haven't gone more than a couple of weeks without working out. Thank you for everything you do!

I love that message because sometimes social media focuses very much on exceptional achievements that an average person might not ever be able to do or ever need to do to live a healthy life. I like that you emphasize that this doesn't need to be the primary focus. It can get discouraging very quickly otherwise.

I discovered at almost 30 that I didn't hate sports, I just never practiced it at a level that suited me and allowed me to progress and stay motivated. I remember distinctly the first time I came across your video explaining pushups progressions on reddit years ago. I had never heard of that concept before, yet it seems so obvious and natural once you know about it. I agree that more people need to know about this, I'm sure a lot would benefit from it just like I do !
Both sides of my family have all kinds of health issues so I decided to take care of my own health while I am young. I tried going to the gym several times but I just didn't enjoy weightlifting (I also hate driving and being in loud, crowded spaces). Calisthenics and walks was what allowed me to exercise and become healthier. I now sleep much better, my lower back pain is gone, I don't get tired after climbing some stairs, I even lost some weight(still not on my ideal weight but I am working on it) and I now have more motivation to do the things I have/want to do throughout my day. The fact that it costs me almost nothing(I paid for some ropes to make a DIY pull up thingy) is a nice bonus.

Being in my late sixties I follow exactly what you talk about. I increase my limit a little at a time. Sometimes I won't excercise for 3 days just walk. What I like to conquer is being able to do Asian squats. My hamstrings have been tight for sometime and cannot bend that low yet. I just wanted to give you a shoot out. Thank you for some reality. I picked up my desk and moved it from the truck to my room, all by myself, when I would normally need to call over a friend. I feel strong, and it's a *practical* strong. Your wall push-ups are my favorite midday break. I'm up to 50 from... very much not 50!

Sug a great vid. I have been lifting weights for the past five years but more recently have found more joy in calisthenics because it seems to be a better blend of technique, finess and strength than simply pumping iron. You also get some amazingly fast progression as you whittle away the pounds 🙂

There is something more spiritual and satisfying in moving only your body in increasingly difficult ways. Really spiritual.
Love your channel, I am trying to stay fit for as long as I can, now almost 67 and no longer working makes it easier for me. I do Squats, Pushups (can only do 5 good ones) and now I am stuck at the Jackknife Pull Ups (only 3x4) It will take a while before I can do a real pull up, but I practise every day until I get it.
Thank you for this work in helping people to become fit and more healthy.
I really like your channel because you encourage people to do something who are put off by all the very fit influencers. I do sports with people who are over 80 years old and they can still do some of the things you show, but they are on the unfit side. But they still take part and it is important for them to continue to lead a good, self-determined life.

Your comment on this not being taught in PE class is so spot on. When I had learnt of these concepts and basic programming that was my first thought as well.
In my PE class, there was subtle (but apparent) stigma over "girl pushups" - the actual word the extremely fit female teacher used. Kind of, "you can do this if you need to [but any person of value should be able to do it the "right" way]" 🤢. I could barely do knee pushups at the time, and they would periodically require us to do harder variations just because they said so. We also had to run the mile in a certain time frame - I think I was almost double that time because I literally couldn't run the whole way. Not to mention all the issues with team sports. I think that PE class is why I still have trauma-like responses to "formal" exercise. And I wasn't entirely unfit - at the end of middle school, the teacher I mentioned above asked me to try for the track and field team after I aced the shotput. I still couldn't run or do pushups, though.

Such wise words - I agree with you 100% sport is important for the people that are not that way inclined rather than for the fit one. I do park runs and I am always motivated by the last ones, not the first ones .

I prefer lifting weights, but showing someone a pistol squat is way more impressive than telling someone how much weight you can squat because unless you lift weights yourself the numbers are arbitrary but everyone has a body and has an idea of how hard a pistol squat is
You explain the importance of basic calisthenics so eloquently. A lot of it is about quality of life as we age. It's important to just keep our mobility and be able to move in a pain-free manner throughout life. When we're young and care-free we tend to take that for granted.
Well said from beginning to end. Once you start calisthenics, you realize that there is always a variation that you can work on. I will never belong to a gym. I have an indoor and an outdoor chin up bar and a set of rings. That's a lot of possibilities. Thank you for your inspiration.

I'm about to turn 72. One of the things I'm most grateful for is my familiarity, since childhood, with basic calisthenic movements. My physical fitness has waxed and waned a bit over the years, but I've always been able to get back on track with these movements when I've needed to. Learn them and teach them to your kids!

I think going to the gym for a lot of people can be stressful and intimidating. Not to mention the time and money sink. With calisthenics you can just do it anywhere. I found time and places at work to work on certain things when I had the random time to do them. Your pull up progression videos helped a lot. I went from not even being able to hang a year ago to doing 8 continuously now. I've lost 160 ppunds doing calisthenics. Up to 300 pushups a day. Where ever. When ever. The whole worlds a gym.

When I was younger I used to work out at the gym, and while I did make a lot of progress, it was all in numbers. Using my body gives me goals and accomplishments that feel much more real, like being able to do a full quat or a pull-up, or touch my toes during a stretch. I also like using my body as much as possible as it gives me more mobility, stamina, and general control. Plus it's super accessible. I don't have to drive down to a gym, I can just do some exercises throughout the day. If I want to do a heavy session, I can, but if I'm lazy or exhausted I can just do a few exercises and it still feels great. I work on my pull-ups every day, but usually just for short amounts of time whenever I pass the pull-up bar at home. My progress has been great doing it this way.
I just turned 30 and have been an athlete since I was a kid and have gone somewhat hardcore but something changed when I turned 30 that I never focused on. I now am focused on longevity and functional movements for my life in general. My muscles may not be as big but my health is in a lot better of a place and I hope to be the guy still doing pull ups in my 70s and 80s and keeping up with the kids 💪

You definitely need a bit of both. Having enough strength to carry your groceries and having enough strength to get up after you've fallen on the ground. Great vid as always
The wealth analogy is great! Unlike wealth, happily it's within almost everyone's reach to lift themselves up by their bootstraps, if you will, and revolutionize their lives. (Going from 10-50th %ile to 50-90th.) It's not zero-sum. Like wealth, obsessing over getting from 99 to 99.9% of your potential and "setting records" will probably make your life worse overall versus more balance. But humanity needs its adventurous freaks, so that's fine, and they aren't taking their health from anyone else.

You’ve done videos in the past about how to ease into a new fitness routine. Could you possibly share a routine that is entirely made up of “modified” sets for beginners or people nursing an injury? And going into what the correct form feels like when you’re rotating the right way and engaging the right muscles? Additionally, can you post a refresher on what “good v. Bad” sensations are? Like, what is the difference between risk of injury pain versus muscle fatigue? Maybe even reaching out to medical professionals and interviewing them to help describe the difference between building up cardio health versus what exercise-induced asthma feels like???
I had a thought watching this video and I don't know if you've covered it before, but have you thought about covering calisthenics exercises available to people with various physical disabilities? In the spirit of the ultimate accessible form of exercise, it might be a useful topic for many, and still an interesting topic for those it doesn't apply to

Another advantage of calisthenics is that most of the exercises naturally include a lot more muscle groups and develop coordination between those different muscle groups. It makes you more resilient to injury, athletic, functionally fit, and prepared for using your muscles in unusual and unexpected ways like for example carrying an awkward load.

Calisthenics is so much more exciting to me than weight lifting. The idea of just lifting heavier and heavier things forever is so boring to me and doesn't make me excited to work out. The idea of someday being able to do a dragon squat or a full bridge from standing is SUPER exciting to me, so it's really incredible to me to find something that makes me Want to get active. It's also super beginner friendly for actual beginners who can't do things that a lot of weight lifters think beginners should be able to do. I've failed so many "beginner" workouts because they were too hard for me, but calisthenics makes me think that I *can* achieve my goals someday even though I'm starting from wall pushups
I really like having progressions of exercise to make my body more functional.

I was one of those guys that was so bulky from the gym that I couldn’t scratch my own back. I switched to calisthenics in college, and stuck with it for 15 years! A few years ago I was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and after several surgeries, come out on the other end with only one side effect, a form of intermittent vertigo which is caused by my brain, not my ears, which instead of causing dizziness, causing some pretty serious balance issues. So now, while there are still many calisthenics exercises I can do, I also have a $4500 total gym which allows me to strap myself in so that I don’t risk falling for the things I want to do that involve more than my own body weight. It’s actually pretty sweet 😂

To do anything you need some calisthenic/mobility base. Thats why its the best way to train for regular people. You dont need some skills to learn pull ups ,push ups, squats and some core work. Once you have that its easy to switch to something new. But the most important thing is that you can find time and place for calisthenics anywhere. Too busy? Do one set of push ups until failure. Thats like 1minute max. Next day do the same but squats or some core hold. Even doing small things like that daily will transform your body. Ofc with some normal nutrition.

I train a little bit of everything, calisthenics, weighted calisthenics, strongman powerlifting weight lifting, swing training, circular training, sprinting rucking and jogging, martial arts, and a tiny bit of bodybuilding. I also do grip work, bite strap training, neck training and feet training. Oh, yeah, and flow training. It's all fun and supplemental to life itself

the physique says it all
I've been watching for years at this point, but I've never done calisthenics, but I'm starting to do it because I've never been in as much pain as i was at the end of a 9 hour shift last week. After pushing 600 pounds of jacks around the store and tossing jack stands and other heavy shit around, my back was killing me, and i couldn't even stretch my back to try to relive the pain. I've had hip pain my entire adult life, and i found a way to reduce or remove it through calisthenics.

Dumbbells are cool. I use them but they're expensive and I'm not buying a set. I use them at the gym but I don't need them to be able to stay fit by using my own body weight. Everything has a purpose, time, and place.
