Damn, I'm 25 now, but for some reason despite our age we keep rewatching this game made for kids... Like if they defined our childhood. Sweet memories. Also, it's enjoyable to watch adult speedrunners mastering such games. xD
So much respect. This must have taken an extremely long time to do and hearing the science behind how you get your time and all the tricks is nothing short of mind boggling.
Fascinanting TAS, the8bitbeast. Congrats! I'm kind of late in the commentary section given the time of the video publication, nonetheless I believe a profound gameplay exploration like this is worth the appretiation by the niche community no matter when. Your commentary adds value and teaches interesting details, both technical ones and others deductive by visuals alone. It's also relevant to the RTA speedrunners. It was a pleasure to watch and listen to it. Thank you.
I checked the WR for 105% category and it's 2h 1m and 9s. I find it absolutely amazing and confusing that this TAS only saves 4 - 5 minutes from a regular human player's run. This game is extremely well optimised.
Yeah, the regular human run is extremely well optimized. However there are many differences in timings, rulesets and emulation for this TAS. Once the time is adjusted for all of this the TAS would get a 1:46:20. So there was much more than 4-5 minutes actually saved
Brilliant mate. So glad I found these...at last lol. Brilliant game..playing warped and FF7 atm...ps1 ofc. I'm just a lil rusty as I need tips for last boss lol.... And now having binged every video out there.. This one's definitely the best and most helpful 😎👌
Awesome TAS! Lots of tricks in the entire run. My favorite parts are the 2 gems and plat in Tomb Time, Dino Might, the cool glitches, and the Flamming Passion's bonus round. That bonus round is hard without bazooka lol. Road Crash is too hard and kills a lot of speedruns. It explains why you didn't get the Platinum Relic lmao
you sound like tom the sound guy from aunty donna and I rly like this video. You're so informative and it's so sick to hear all the little tricks and glitches and reasonings in speed runs explained
37:40 the button 31 pops up only if you have 31 or plus crystals (you get them through item glitch of course) and your crystals are not a multiple of 5. With 30 crystals all buttons in warp 6 disappear, it probably tries to load a boss battle button but there isn't any boss so it's just an empty warp. I covered all of this in a video a couple of years ago. I can link it here if you give me permission.
Nice explanation video, I knew that you needed extra crystals for the button but I didn't realise that 30 crystals makes all the buttons disappear, that's cool. Linking the video is fine, especially since I forgot to give an in depth explanation in the commentary
Alright, there we go: ruclips.net/video/qXc9Q4GNwW4/видео.html I'm glad the explaining was understandable, my english skills weren't exactly shining 5 years ago.
Dear the8bitbeast, Four years late and I'm here commeting again on the masterpiece of TAS you created. I would like to ask this: that you consider reupload this TAS with better video and audio quality, alongside new commentary dedicated exclusively to the content instead of answer at the same time the chat. Would be possible? I feel that even more pertinent and rich analysis can be done and that this TAS wasn't exhausted it's potential on two hours video. Your commentaries on Crash 1 were excellent and I enjoy listen to then at least one time per semester. It's help relax, be informed and have fun. I hope I'm not asking you to think too much on something maybe you believe is finished or being indelicated based on your judgment. Best wishes.
Thanks! Unfortunately the commentary was only recorded in this quality but there is an uncommentated version with much better quality here: ruclips.net/video/0MIXcWuCmqM/видео.html
Can the original TASer rerecord this in 4k and reupload? Super enjoyable and great commentary but the 720p super low bitrate recording quality is really bad. Needs better quality to do it justice!
I can't spot anything unusual at 1:04:05 unless you mean the shaking when I enter the jetski level? That shaking is caused by doing a button glitch and body slamming and hitting the ground just as you lose control and the level loads
So with a slide spin, you start zigzagging as soon as you hit the slide input? And it's always faster at an angle? How much faster would you need to zigzag in RTA for slide spins to be better than NSJ's? I'm very curious to know specifically why speedrunners avoid slide spinning.
Yeah no matter what you're doing you should always zigzag a slide. Then the only difference is that when you jump you let go but if you spin you zigzag. It's been a while since making this TAS so I cant remember the actual numbers but a slide spin is barely faster than a NSJ so it is likely not worth it RTA unless you can literally zigzag frame perfectly.
@@leftear8010 it would pretty much be swapping from up right to up left 30 times per second (so 15 rights and 15 lefts). I dont think it would really be possible. Not to mention d-pad gets slightly less range than analog, so thats also a disadvantage
There are some slight differences in timing between the two versions due to frame rates. Also there were some bug fixes since hot coco used to use the wrong times (which is fixed in PAL)
This has been a good year for Crash TASing. Good work, dude. Beautiful run. The damage-sound Crash makes at times - is it because the mask hasn't ''reached his face''? :-P (@ 1:27:02 & 1:41:35)
Thanks, I'm really glad you enjoyed it! That's a really cool observation about the damage sound, I never noticed it before since I don't hear it when TASing. Not sure what the cause is but the mask not reaching his face seems right
Wouldn't jumping away from the warp zone still be the same amount of time being that the game still stays that way as if crash was in that warp animation through the portal.
What i don't understand is how you get the white gem when you do not break all the boxes. You missed some between. 5:00 and 6:42. Please let me know as I have seen this in other videos by other RUclipsrs too
The movement in the warp room worked out a tiny tiny bit faster that way. Also making the TAS of Orient Express was really exhausting so I wanted a break before I had to do it again for the relic
How is it possible to pull off three gem routes, including the All-Gem Challenge, and one death route while still pulling Gold or Platinum on each!? Even if that was TAS, it blew my mind. Also I didn't know you could combine gem pulls with Relic pulls if you were clever enough.
Thanks! Yeah you can combine a lot of stuff. Sometimes I also use the button glitch which loads the wrong times for the time trials, allowing me to get platinum for a level by beating the platinum time for a different level. But for most levels I beat the normal platinum time too
ok this is amazing, i did google TAS but i didnt get if a human plays or just the computer plays, can someone please explain to me id the uploader played or it was just the computer who did play? because this is unreal :R
Some of the movement in the any% TAS is completely insane. Why is that sort of movement not implemented in this run, for example for time trials with no gem?
That was a decision made to make the TAS more entertaining, so it's worked into the rules for the TAS (along with no item glitch for example). Personally I would prefer using movement like in any% but the feedback I received from that TAS was that most people prefer more human-like movement.
I did a glitch when entering the level called button glitch which messes with the time trial times. The time that I got in the TAS would have been a platinum time if I hadn't done the glitch
A TAS (tool-assisted speedrun) is made by slowing down the game and carefully choosing the button presses that will be fastest. I can go back and redo sections as much as I want. For that reason it shouldn't compete with human gameplay and is not considered a WR, even though it's faster than a human playing normally can complete the game. tasvideos.org/ is a great resource for info about tool assisted speedruns
You have no idea how much this kind of content means to me homie, it helps me sleep, it helps me stay calm, it's informative and fun. Much love.
Lots of tricks would have gone overlooked if not for your commentary. Thank you so much for all the effort you've put into this.
Man, I'm 29 now, I'm amazed by this, if 14 year old me could have seen this I would have lost my shit.
Damn, I'm 25 now, but for some reason despite our age we keep rewatching this game made for kids... Like if they defined our childhood. Sweet memories.

Yes, yes, and all the yes. The Crash TASes are why I came here, and I'm excited to see a new one.
It's just the new cup of tea. Speedrunning and TAS make the life worth living. Lmao.

I like that you got a gold on Road Crash. It's super confusing and funny that that perfect run didn't get a platinum!
It actually deserved the platinum, wich requires 1:17:10 but it's glitched since he does the little trick before entering the portal
Well done for the video of crash bandicoot warped
i havnt seen a rrun of this in a while, i used to race it on SRL, a lot has changed in just a few years thanks dude this was awesome

You are the best
10:40 okay I would love to see this glitch in action!
_You still get 105% whether you get Platinum or Gold relics as long as you have them all right?_
Yeah you just need golds
Very glad to see this finally come out. You mind uploading the vid in a higher quality? For the boys.
Thanks! Unfortunately the commentary was only recorded in this quality but there is an uncommentated version with much better quality here: ruclips.net/video/0MIXcWuCmqM/видео.html

Wow U r the best in crash bandicoot
Pura cuddleskip Most depressing skip ever
32:40 you don't slam the reinforced box. How does it count for white gem then?
1:46:21 not platinum :c
I havent seen a 105% run in a while, what happened at 1:52:50 ?
Once you have done all the time trials with at least gold relics Coco gives you a gem as a reward
The8bitbeast Oh, haha. What about 1:04:05? its there just for a moment
I can't spot anything unusual at 1:04:05 unless you mean the shaking when I enter the jetski level? That shaking is caused by doing a button glitch and body slamming and hitting the ground just as you lose control and the level loads
its directly at 1:04:05, the time trail time changes to something ridiculous for a frame or few
edit: its 364:-2145536748
Wow that's so strange. Only thing I can think of is maybe it's because of button glitch. I'm not sure though

@@The8bitbeast Very interesting, I appreciate the response, and I look forward to the Crash 1 tas :)
Good job but what changes the game in a tas
Is it really faster to slide spin rather than nsj without invincibility that surprises me
Yeah it is faster with perfect zigzagging becuase it lets you get back to quick sliding more often. Not worth it in rta though
Why are the pal time trial times different to the ntsc time trial times?
There are some slight differences in timing between the two versions due to frame rates. Also there were some bug fixes since hot coco used to use the wrong times (which is fixed in PAL)
@@The8bitbeast hot coco - pal time: 19.96
Ntsc time: 1:17:10
Lol
@@The8bitbeast but i dont care, i got all platinum relics but the hardest was rings of power because the plane is much slower in the pal version
@@wholelottaleif Oh whoops I had that the wrong way around. It's the same reasoning though
@@wholelottaleif I believe it was impossible to get a Platinum in Rings Of Power on the PAL release.

Because when you’re invincible you have a huge hit box that destroys them after you’ve ran past them (off camera)
@The8bitbeast - Is there any reason why you decided to collect Orient Express' relic later?
The movement in the warp room worked out a tiny tiny bit faster that way. Also making the TAS of Orient Express was really exhausting so I wanted a break before I had to do it again for the relic
