This might be the best "how to" video I've seen. There are a lot of steps here and everything was explained in enough detail I could pull it off. Then I couldn't get audio to work and I find the reason why in the comments. This video is impressive.
Hello. I hope all is well. I was on a trip and took the laptop with me. When I turned it on, there were no Wi-Fi drivers as before. I didn’t know what happened and do not remember installing an update with kernels. Thankful, I remembered your channel and this video. I followed the “make clean” steps and was able to get the Wi-Fi drivers after rebooting. I did not have a Ethernet cable because I remembered that you said to save the drivers in the laptop. The process was easy and quick. I was able to log in the internet and get work completed on time. I just wanted to say thank you again for this tutorial. It helped again when I needed it the most.

@moniquemm5536 Raspberry Pis are a great introduction to 'embedded devices'. Portable electronics and pretty much anything that has motors and sensors use embedded devices. The regular RPis are hard to find at the moment, hopefully supply improves soon. The Pico version is easier to find but it's quite different from the others, it doesn't run linux or any OS. I plan to cover both. And MicroCenter is the best, if you ever see me there be sure to say hello haha! 😆
You are the only resource I could find that covered this issue, and had a concise solution for it. I legitimately thought I had messed up a setting while configuring the settings in the BIOS menu that disabled the wifi module. Thank you for this. I wish all how-to youtubers were of your calibre: top-tier instructional quality.
Did a treat for me using this $60 laptop. I put another 30 into it by buying a 256Gb SSD and taking out the LTE card. I'm running dual boot Windows/Linux. Thanks for the video!
Just got mine today and it's a V1 so I couldn't be happier. I'll just backup the drivers just in case and install Linux, but even in stock settings windows 10 runs way better than expected and the screen is much brighter than what I was thinking, amazing.

Thank you! I tried to make it clear while also moving fast. I bought a $15 HDMI to USB capture card from Ebay and recorded on my desktop through OBS studio. It only does 1080p/30 fps but good enough for this application and works great for an RPi too. Also the laptop requires a mini HDMI adapter to convert to regular sized HDMI. Oh yea, did you get a chance to try Linux on the 2nd one yet?

is there any way of making this WiFi update permanent rather than reload per kernel update also is there anyway to get rid of the dkms failure of the newer one that hangs when an upgrade is run? your instructional was dead on but i guess you didnt mention that every episode of make requires a coldboot in order to see the revission reboot just wont do it.. never the less thanks for great instruction Chaz
Thanks, you're right that's one detail I forgot to mention. I'm not aware of any way to make the WiFi drivers permanent. It's probably possible to write bash script that automatically runs after every kernel update and installs the WiFi drivers, but I haven't looked into that. Hopefully the drivers will find their way into a new kernel eventually.

That's great to hear, thanks! To be honest I'm not 100% sure, I think it's possible but the process would be a lot more involved. However another viewer recently told me the newest Ubuntu version 23.04 has the Wi-Fi drivers built in, so I suggest trying that!
I checked and kernel 6.0 RC1 has the wifi driver in the kernel. I'm going to get one of these laptops this weekend and make a Debian Bookworm (testing) with 6.0 RC2 (out today!) distro for it that works out of the box.
Well maybe I jumped the gun a bit. I'll know for sure about the wifi once I get one on Friday. It supports many versions of the rtl8723 chipset but I am trying to confirm if the rtl8723du is included.
Take a look at my pinned comment I left on this video and check which version of the laptop you got. With the help of others we were able to find out there are two versions of this laptop. If you have v2 then unfortunately audio isn't working in Linux at this time. It might be added in a future kernel update, but I don't know when.
it seems like this laptop has a sim card slot, wonder if that actually works? But I'm running ChromeOS Flex on it right now, kind of wonder if the LTE? would work instead, but it runs wonderfully with two catches, no wifi or audio. I'm pondering if I can do some kind of work around that doesn't require full time Ethernet over USB and possibly Audio over USB?
I haven't tried the sim card since I replaced it with an SSD. But I've heard from others that it does work. I don't have experience with ChromeOS but Linux works great and so do the WiFi drivers if you follow my video showing how.
@@PhazerTech yeah I tried the LTE but there must be a setting I need to change for it. I want to try and get hooked up with the Windows driver for it, or maybe try to get it to work in Linux. But I'm probably gonna retry ChromeOS Flex again and contact the carrier to see if there's any settings I could try if it doesn't work this time. I'll have to try the wifi drivers from your video into chrome since it seems like it has some Debian/Ubuntu things in there.
Linux should run no problem, except audio isn't working with that version. It's a driver issue so hopefully the drivers get updated sooner than later. Also WiFi drivers need to be manually compiled on all versions, but that's all covered in the video!
I haven't gotten that far yet. I did figure out that when I did the sudo boot it took abotu 5-10 mins for the software to get back to a point where I could do anything. Is this normal on this unit?
Which part are you at? Did you mean "sudo reboot"? When installing the OS or doing updates for the first time, it certainly can take 5-10 mins to finish.
I did everything. Took out the dongle but my wifi network is not connecting? How do I ck. I see the ssid of my network and the pw is right but no connection. Should I do it over?
If you see your network and other nearby networks, the installation should be fine. Some areas are very congested when it comes to WiFi, especially 2.4Ghz, which is why most routers now support 5 Ghz. However this laptop only supports 2.4 Ghz.
Yep, unfortunately this is the case right now with the v2 in Linux. After making this video I was able to find out with the help of viewers that the v2 has a different audio chipset. The driver for it hasn't been made yet, so hopefully it gets added to a future kernel update. I'll keep the pinned comment on this video updated with more info.

I installed your fix as per your video. But, after rebooting the driver does not seem to be there anymore, and I can't see my, or any, wireless networks. What did I do wrong?
I don't believe you did anything wrong. It sounds like your system did a kernel update, which doesn't take effect till after you reboot. As mentioned in the video, you'll need to reinstall the WiFi drivers after each kernel update. Fortunately these kernel updates don't occur very frequently. I recommend keeping the driver folder you downloaded. Whenever this happens, run these commands inside the driver folder: make clean make -j4 sudo make install sudo modprobe -v 8723du Very similar to the original commands, but you need to do 'make clean' first. I wish the drivers would be added to the kernel already, then this process wouldn't be necessary!

@@georgemitchell2288 I'm currently running several printers with klipper on a regular desktop with Linux. It shouldn't be any different on this laptop. Which part of the firmware flash is failing? I can help you debug it. Doing a video showing how to install klipper sounds like a good one, although I'm already working on a few others right now so I'll see if I have time to do it soon, but thanks I appreciate the support! As far as running the laptop with the lid closed, that can be easily done in the settings menu. Go to settings -> energy saving settings -> then there will be an option called "when laptop lid closed" with a drag down menu. Change it from "sleep" to "do nothing" or more preferably "turn off screen". Let me know how it goes.
You probably have one of the newer revisions. They use a different audio chipset and unfortunately its lacking built in drivers. @@moniquemm5536 Interesting, it's possible the drivers were finally added to the latest kernel. I'll look more into it. And I think that's an excellent idea! One of the advantages of KDE is the customization. I'll add it to the list and will try to get to it in a few weeks.
All you have to do to get wifi to work "out of the box" is to check the box "Use proprietary drivers" during the install. That option is easy to miss. I did two installs, the first time NOT checking the box, and wifi didn't work. I went back and did a second install and checked the box, and wifi and audio worked great OUT OF THE BOX.
Which edition of Mint did you install? Also do you have the original version of the laptop or v2? I can't seem to find the "use proprietary drivers" option, which part of the installation is it in?
Unfortunately I don't have experience with the SIM card on this laptop, so I don't think I'll be able to help much. I removed the LTE card in mine and replaced it with an SSD. Sorry!
You must a magician. I personally cannot access internet after installing any linux with a wifi connection a an ethernet connection. I bet you cannot do that. neither can I. So why don't you remove your video until you get it right.
The evidence is in the video. Also look at the other comments, obviously other people were able to do it also. Maybe you can try a different USB to ethernet adapter.
Here is a simple way to install the driver for the Realtek RTL8723du internal wifi device. Before you begin you will need to disable secure boot in the security tab in the bios if you installed your system in UEFI mode. An internet connection is also required. Use a USB ethernet adapter. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kelebek333/kablosuz sudo apt update sudo apt install rtl8723du-dkms reboot

All I could find is model: MZB1164G64GW10 at Microcenter. Does this have a prayer of running Linux?

@@PhazerTech hello. Yes. It’s said kernel. I am loving KDE but do not see an updated tutorial on building a customizable desktop. Some of widgets like the weather does appear on my desktop.
@@moniquemm5536 Interesting, it's possible the drivers were finally added to the latest kernel. I'll look more into it.
And I think that's an excellent idea! One of the advantages of KDE is the customization. I'll add it to the list and will try to get to it in a few weeks.

All you have to do to get wifi to work "out of the box" is to check the box "Use proprietary drivers" during the install. That option is easy to miss. I did two installs, the first time NOT checking the box, and wifi didn't work. I went back and did a second install and checked the box, and wifi and audio worked great OUT OF THE BOX.
Which edition of Mint did you install? Also do you have the original version of the laptop or v2? I can't seem to find the "use proprietary drivers" option, which part of the installation is it in?

Unfortunately I don't have experience with the SIM card on this laptop, so I don't think I'll be able to help much. I removed the LTE card in mine and replaced it with an SSD. Sorry!

You must a magician. I personally cannot access internet after installing any linux with a wifi connection a an ethernet connection. I bet you cannot do that. neither can I. So why don't you remove your video until you get it right.
The evidence is in the video. Also look at the other comments, obviously other people were able to do it also. Maybe you can try a different USB to ethernet adapter.
you have to follow the video. wifi driver does not work out of the box. I used an old usb wifi dongle to set up the driver.
It worked for me, and I'm no Linux power user, just a beginner. Try harder!
Here is a simple way to install the driver for the Realtek RTL8723du internal wifi device.
Before you begin you will need to disable secure boot in the security tab in the bios if you installed your system in UEFI mode. An internet connection is also required. Use a USB ethernet adapter.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kelebek333/kablosuz
sudo apt update
sudo apt install rtl8723du-dkms
reboot
Thanks for pointing this out, it seems this newer method automatically rebuilds the drivers after every kernel update too!
