True enough to form Eddie was the apex talent with this switch of cordiality to wisenheimer within mere seconds, I was 12 and recognized it immediately. I remember reading in some interview that Eddie Haskell was originally intended to be just a one shot character but they loved his performance so much they made him a semi regular. You have to admit as great as the show is it wouldn't have been as good without Ken Osmond
Even though Ken Osmond was almost two years older than Tony Dow (he was already 14 when the show started) his voice didn't start changing until several months after Tony. Tony was lucky that he was able to transition quickly to be the teenaged older brother and had a baby face.

I remember the episode (forgot the story line) where Eddie pulled a real stunt and got everyone mad. In the aftermath, Eddie and Beaver are talking, and Beaver said, *"Nobody* likes you, Eddie. Gee, I mean, Wally's your best friend, and even *he* doesn't like you."
I think it was the voodoo episode where Beaver sticks a doll with a nail and pin to hurt Eddie. Beaver thinks it actually worked because Eddie got "sick" out of nowhere, he was actually faking to get out of school I think, he found that out when he went to visit Eddie. Then after Beaver tells Eddie what he did he starts believing the voodoo thing worked and starts feeling pains where the pins were in the doll.

I just started watching leave it to beaver at 58 years old and I’m enjoying it so much. I’m mostly enjoying the clothes/fashion on that decade. Psychology today did a whole article on the Eddie Haskell character. ..Two face, sycophant. Actor did a great job on this character.
How he switched sooo fast from cloyingly polite to smart aleck! One of my favorite scenes of his different reactions to the same situation depending on who he was talking to was when Beaver got stuck in a bowl on a billboard. Of course, pretty soon there was a crowd to see what's going on - including Eddie and Wally's other friends. He's all cracking a joke to Wally about "some dumb kid fell in the soup", but as soon as Mr. Cleaver shows up, he's the picture of concern: "Some poor child fell in!"🤣

putting the character of eddie haskell in is far more important than people think. it was no accident. They could not have a cheesy flat series one dimension with flat bland parents. It would not have lasted. They had to put in some bad guys. Eddie Haskell enters. fake and contriving where the parents want to kill him. That also gave the parents depth as "real". How many episodes could you have them just eating dinner and making standard comments? I think Eddie Haskell was a MAJOR contributor. I am 70 so I remember him coming over being sticky sweet go upstairs door closes "get out of here half pint hows the weather down there" I think it was a great series that was much more in depth than people think. The people that created the movies were highly advanced and used the series to show "a preposterous family"----------------------- that the writers hated. But they stayed middle of the road and broke people in slowly. There was no abuse or exploitation.

@@danielhixson3717 LOL! You know, it wasn't that they made him occasionally, and very briefly, likeable that made me empathize with Eddie. Sometimes, when another attempt to be cool fell flat, you could see the hurt and confusion on Eddie's face as he had that moment of realization that he was never going to be that guy. It was brilliantly nuanced acting by Ken Osmond.

@@IncogNito-gg6uh Well, they couldn't be too accurate in the depiction. I mean, Eddie had to be somewhat likable. Otherwise Wally would have killed him, then stuff him into one of those trash cans that he and the Beaver painted.
@@danielhixson3717 LOL! You know, it wasn't that they made him occasionally, and very briefly, likeable that made me empathize with Eddie. Sometimes, when another attempt to be cool fell flat, you could see the hurt and confusion on Eddie's face as he had that moment of realization that he was never going to be that guy. It was brilliantly nuanced acting by Ken Osmond.
@@IncogNito-gg6uh I do remember when Eddie got his feelings hurt, I felt so bad for him. Didn't last long though.
