The VSCC Prescott hillclimb - the SIGHTS & SOUNDS of historic racing cars at speed (ERA, Bugatti +)

  • Our visit to the VSCC Prescott hillclimb meeting in September 2022 is the subject of this video. I'd been hoping to visit this VSCC (Vintage Sports Car Club) meeting all year, and fortunately the weather gods were on our side as we trundled over to the Prescott hillclimb venue in leafy Gloucestershire.
A mouthwatering array of vintage and post-vintage cars were in attendance, with some interesting classic cars to also be found over in the public car parking area at Prescott, long-term home to the Bugatti Owner's Club.
Cars competing for VSCC hill climb honours at this meeting including a fantastic quartet of ERA single seat racing cars (including the famous ERA R4D), Bugattis, a varied mix of Rileys, Frazer Nashes, Austin 7s, Edwardian-era cars, and many one-off "specials" too, most of which have competed in hillclimbs and similar speed events for years, decades even. Just walking around in the paddock area felt like a real privilege in itself, surrounded by all manner of wonderful vintage and classic cars warming engines and being prep'd for their runs, enveloped by the smell of Castrol R and cooking bacon.
After having a good look around the paddock, we headed over to the hill course itself and stationed ourselves in different positions throughout the day to capture the cars as they raced by from different angles. To see some of the larger-engined cars in particular being hurried through the Prescott hillclimb's bends was a proper treat for the eyes and ears. I think watching historic racing cars tackle a hillclimb is even more entertaining than watching circuit racing in many cases.
Our walk around the car parks didn't prove to be time wasted either as there were some great cars - vintage and classic - to be found, many of which have also made it into this upload. In all, 364 separate clips - each edited and tweaked - went into this upload.
Likes, comments and subs welcomed as always, please take a look around the rest of the channel before you leave entirely, footage from previous VSCC events in addition to a great deal of other classic car content can be found - including other shows featuring classic cars, motoring museums, garage tinkerings, barn finds and more.

Bacon mixed with Castrol R. Does it get any better. What a delicious paddock full of mouth watering cars, being used as intended.

I'm not sure thrashing the bollocks off all these old cars is a good idea? I don't know because I'm not mechanically minded, but it seems odd to me.

The green ERA (original ERA factory team colour) is a "toolroom" copy which appeared last year. It's a fabulous re-creation.
Nice to meet you and Harley on the hill.

The ERAs seem to be particularly well suited to hill climbs - I'm assuming that they're putting in some pretty good times. Thanks, Rick. Springtime is slowly cranking into action - a bit of a sputtering start - here in New Zealand (just seeing how many engine references I could fit in). 🙂

I have to say that my Favorite is th MG monoposte with the dual wheels. I have been sourcing parts to build my own for my RUclips channel. I have been assembling a small machine shop for making parts to restore my 1928 Morgan/MG Special 3 wheeler with 4 wheels. I am using an experimental aircraft opposed twin engine with a hand cast aluminum 2 piece adapter to mate with an MG 4 speed manual transmission. This goes to an MG differential with beautiful wire wheels. The frame is wood over steel and then covered by aircraft cloth and sprayed with plasticizer. The next project will be an R-100 BMW based front engine Brooklands style Boat tail race cyclecar similar to a Pembleton. I am recovering from getting run over on my 1957 Harley Panhead so as soon as it is warmer I am starting the channel named machines and motors..Hope to see you all there.

Ref your comment about the Bentley at 41.26. The only visible difference between the MK VI and R Type, is that the boot on the R Type is much bigger; twice the capacity, apparently. If you Google the number plate, you'll find it's an R type that spent most of its life in Scotland. It's also had a lot of work done to keep it in good condition. What you might call a real Bobby Dazzler. ;-)

@Old Clasic Car there's quite a detailed wikipedia page on ERA R4D - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ERA_R4D. There's no mention of Riley Motors on the page, but you made me curious, so I had a look and learned something new (I try to, every day). Riley Motors trademark is apparently now owned by BMW, if Wiki can be believed - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riley_Motor. For an ERA connection See Lord Nuffield's mention - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riley_Motor#Nuffield_Organization.
Then I went and got my reading glasses and my copy of 'Raymond May's Magnificent Obsession' by Bryan Apps off the shelf. (I've read bits of it, but I'm in the middle of K Horsman's 'Racing in the Rain' and other 60-70's Sportscar reading. I'll get there)... Anyway, I skimmed Chapter 1 again, and R4D is indeed a very special car, what a delight, thanks for sharing! I see someone else has requested Closed Captions (CC) with each car's information, that would be beyond amazing, and make these videos even more historically important. Who knows, one of these pieces of history might be sold to a garage queen collector, and never seen again. Sadly, private collections are a reality.

  • @jogge1980

is it normal to drive these expensive vintage cars so fast? after all, several are close to a car accident ... or right on the edge ... I know cars must be used, but I didn't dare drive so fast with a priceless car…

    • @oldclassiccarUK
      @oldclassiccarUK  Год назад

That's what they're for, I'd rather see them being driven properly than gathering dust in a museum somewhere. If something breaks, it gets repaired, just as when they were new. Thanks for watching

It baffles the mind how you, a person who makes regular long form videos, is still to this day walking around filming car shows with a handheld phone???? How you're not at least using a gimbal I can't quite fathom. I guarantee you there's been 100's if not 1000's of people who've stumbled across ur channel, and although fasinating, have like myself stopped watching after 5min of jerky videography. It can all be solved by purchasing a gimbal. Anyway ill check back every so often. 🙂
