I think that he might have beaten Tyson if he had trained more diligently, and come in about 12-15 pounds lighter. That was his one weakness, not being able to consistently keep himself in shape.
Your daddy has fastest hands of any heavyweight, him or Michael dokes.i remember in 90s the Lewis camp brought Tony in to show Lennox stuff, and they nicknamed him the professor.Tubbs,Page,Witherspoon,Dokes,Berbick, they don't get enuff credit.
The 80s heavyweights were heavily flawed, but they didn't lack for raw talent. If you saw Greg Page, Tony Tubbs, Tim Witherspoon, Tony Tucker, and Carl Williams as young prospects, you would have thought that the 80s would be better than it ended up being.
All these guys had Talent all these guys can fight but as someone else mentioned it was the 80s crack and cocaine was Heavy in the streets and many of these brothers got caught up in it sad reality many of these fighters from the 80s could have been really really great👊👊
He was still fighting in 2004. Saw him beat Brian Minto. Most of the ppl in the audience didn’t even know who he was but me and my boxing coach did. I felt homered to be able to whiteness a true legend in the ring!
Tubbs was Very Very talented & super fast hands. Won the WBA title winning an unanimous decision over Greg Page. After that he lost to Mike Tyson by KO in Japan. But years past his best he fought a prime Riddick Bowe & many felt he won & was robbed of the decision.
Man if he had stayed in shape and gave it his all he could have been the best of his era. Tyson and Holmes still would have been serious obstacles but the talent, speed, head movement, footwork, and ring IQ were way up there.
@@King-qu6bc that makes sense because a guy who relies on speed and jabbing like Holmes hates having to fight tricky jittery guys like Tubbs. Holmes would probably never KO him and every round would be competitive.
Just saw him again last Saturday. An extremely cool guy that had a Nicolino Locche esque uncanny ability to dodge punches when he was right. Super slick heavyweight with incredible athleticism and great fundamentals.
@@E5C4P377 IDK man. Did you see that fight? Tubbs did really well and he was the size of a house in that fight. I mean seriously some of his inside boxing was beautiful in that fight. He caught Tyson with some peachy left hands coming in as well. Its not impossible to think that on another night, in better shape, he might have beaten Tyson. And im not one of those "tyson was a hypejob" guys at all. Im just saying Tubbs was quality and could feasibly have done it.
@@Shovelhook yeah OK but do you also dismiss tysons later career where he loses to mcbride and Williams? If you understand that if tyson was fitter and more motivated than he could have easily beaten them then how do you dismiss the idea that Tony tubbs who was enormous during his tyson fight and still performed well might have won on another night?
Here's a real facts Tony never got in shape a day in his life he always came in overweight untrained and not fit he had very excellent hand speed and pretty good feet he had very little pop💪 the rest of it is dust in the wind 👊💯👍🤗
By the end of 1985, Greg was shot. Buster was lucky he caught him around the time he was faded, as did many after. Buster wasn't all that, he had the perfect night against Tyson.
Tubbs turned pro in 1980, Page in 1979. When they were in the amateurs, Page won 6 out of 7 against Tubbs. Greg's problems with Don King are well noted. By the time Tony fought Greg, Greg was not the same fighter as he was from 79-82. If that version fought Tony, there would be problems for Tony. Like a loss.
Tyson made every good fighter during that time look average. Tubbs was a very good fighter but Tyson was beast in his prime he blasted through the division until that uppercut caught him
No real boxing fan would say this. Tubbs was quality in that fight. He didnt look a chump at all. Tyson was just in his absolute chainsaw phase where nothing could stop him.

Right on the money
Dude was no tomato can... Deceptively fast despite his package & the inevitable plays on his surname... Tony knew how to throw 'em.
What about his chin?

He’s a pad man now
Very impressive for a guy weighing 240+
I haven't seen much of Tubbs before, it looks like he was a solid heavyweight with some fast hands.
dude had fast hands, dokes, ali,Patterson and Mike also had fast hands for a heavywieght

@@tonyh8965 Bowe was still developed at time but I agree, Tubbs was out of his prime. Tyson had faster hands than him.
He got robbed against Bowe. He definitely won that fight.
Old Skool slick...huge respect, those were some serious skills.
Nice montage. Too bad you didn't have the Bonecrusher Smith fight, which showcased some of Tubbs' finest and fastest combination punching.
Couldn't find it in good quality unfortunately.

I actually just met Tony today at one of my amateur matches
That's my Cousin champ of the world
Imagine if he could have stayed more deticated to a proper diet he always had a problem with his weight but he was still slick even when he was pudgy

untill he met tyson.

Greg Page at minimum, was every bit as fast and talented. He caught Greg on a wrong night. But Tony was a damn good fighter with great hand speed.
