Out of all the jazz GREATS, I dunno it was something about the sweet and low vocals of Sarah Vaughn that changed me forever. With every drop of sweat she was sharing something extremely personal with us. She exemplified if you are going to be a singer, of any kind, do it RIGHT!!!!!!!
What a brillant, sultry rendition of "Summertime" by one of the greatest contralto's who ever lived. Her musicality brings me to a higher level and invokes the deepest embers of my heart.
With immense elegance and opulence, Sassy Diva, Sarah Vaughan, eclipse me to the majestic fisrt soprano jazz hemisphere evoking me to have a vocal organism: this rendition of " Smmertime" is immensely moving, riveting, soulful, operatic to my soul. Sarah Vaughan was a " badass" vocalist whose vocal range, style, phrasing, sustained breathing and pure jazz splendor will certainly be remembered in decades to come. There will never be another Sarah Vaughan; she is an American international legend and icon!
To my mam, a beautiful redhead with hazel-green eyes now in her 80s who as an alto, sang this to me, and I dedicate this to her with the entirety of my heart and all my love*
Not just her best version but THE best version probably ever recorded by any singer! No words can describe her voice, that tone. Mesmerizing doesn't still quite capture it.
Wow, the raw emotion with which she interprets this song is just spellbinding, a performance of such virtuosity as to leave the listener breathless. What a gem. Thanks for uploading this. You made this languid summer morning complete.
i love this song.. i also sing this song in my set.. im a singer.. blues.. now ive heard different women cover this which i thought were good..and up until i heard Sarah Vaughn sing it .. i loved Janis Joplins version best. Now i have to hand the crown and septula over to the Queen miss Sarah Vaughn.. This is so amazing i am speechless and thats not an easy thing for me. Its so amazing to hear all the colours in her voice..(the different textures or dimensions) .Pure artistry masterpiece.
Just awesome Sarah's voice is like no other! The pianist is playing beautiful as well, and I love that little move he makes with his hand @ 3:08. Nobody compares to Sarah!
I've heard different versions of this sublime song by SV, each somewhat different, but each demonstrating her unique ability. For me, hers are the best vocal renditions of Gershwin's masterpiece.
am always baffled by those people who dislike a song that has so many likes, the fact that there would be 12oo likes and two likes makes you wonder "are you sane???"
@ziphoism I´m glad you like it. One can like or dislike the way she sings but it´s clear she´s one of the greatest voices ever listen the lows and highs(not only but also) ...such a wide range! Who else can do this?
Did you hear her voice when she came out? She is definitely a mezzo. But like many singers, her voice darkened with age and her lower register got fuller (although she always had a strong one). Even Aretha who is a Falcon Soprano hit has voiced powerful G2 live. And Maria, who also a soprano has also a powerful register. Sarah is not a contralto because her belts gets lighter as they ascend, they do not carry the heavy texture that contraltos carry through their belting range.
I adamantly concur with your accurate assessment of Sarah Vaughan' s impeccable range and splendid. She is an authentic mezzo soprano thunderously and lusciously employed the higher and lower register with immense depth, soul, elegance, ebullience, and whimical animation.
One of these mornings You're goin' to rise up singing Then you'll spread your wings And you'll take the sky But till that morning There's a nothin' can harm you With daddy and mammy standin' by Sorry, but all I can think is that that's another way of saying "You're eventually going to die. But don't worry about that now.".
The greatest female singer of popular music in the twentieth century --- rip Divine One -- I love you

In my opinion she was the greatest female singer of all time! True legend!
Opinions vary! (Sarah-Ella-Dinah or Billie; take your pick!)
I agree
She is still the greatest!!!
She was just too much. She never sang a song the same twice yet we knew which song it was. Love Sarah
I cried, I'm just so sad that amazing people like her can't share their gift forever. I really wish there was more music like this being made today.
This is my 5 time consecutively assiduously listening to 'Summertime'and spellbound.

It was in the musical "Porgy and Bess" in 1940, but it's been covered by many artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday, even Janis Joplin.
