i went to victoria for a day trip on friday september 6th of 2024 (september 6th is my birthday) and rode the spirit of BC both there and back and not once did they sound her new whistles. Just the old one which sounds like a shy cow mooing.
@@Mayah_Abelman Radar and other navigational equipment is so advanced they don’t need it like 70% of the time, so they use the quieter one to avoid complaints from residents.
@@Mayah_Abelman they probably do but they’re the only whistles those vessels have, whereas the Spirit’s have their quieter whistles, see what I’m getting at?
I just went on the Spirit of BC on May 9th of this year, it was the 2:00 ferry from Swartz Bay and they actually sounded the loud horn which I was surprised by. Wish I could have recorded it... But I've travelled the spirit class vessels so many times and they always used the quieter one. It was a special treat that's for sure.
@@alexmcintyre8229 These recordings are from 2020, they seldom used the three tone in 2021 where I was recording. Nowadays I hear them sound it around the bend in active pass sometimes but not at the start where I can record it.
I believe BCFerries is incapable of tuning the whistles, most people are and the only few who could have most likely passed away or are not accessible. How ever the issue is just one trumpet not sounding. Just replace the solenoid valve for the highest tone and it’s back to normal. Will probably have more videos in the summer as that’s when I go to the island.
@@ferriesbc agreed, this is probly my favourite whistle after the queen of Nanaimo or Vancouver, Rob Swanson would be real upset if he heard the new west though lol.
@@TheCobalt5 the New West’s whistle has been very inconsistent over the years, no idea why but if he were here to correct it I would love it. The SOBC definitely has a better voice now but in my opinion, it would’ve been nicer with something sounding closer to the Nanny or the Vancouver. There’s also the Queen of Cowichan’s whistle, it’s quite good.

They don't sound it regularly anymore sadly. That trip to Mayne that I took they sounded it nearly all the time!
@@ferriesbc they should i feel it’s a lot safer than the quiet one. Having a loud horn makes for better safety and communication with other boats.

@@ferriesbc The horns from the other ships (new Westminster, queen of Surrey, etc) are also very loud. Surprised residents don’t complain about them.

Nice, 2020 was really just a fluke summer because I rarely hear them sound it.
The last one was the spirit of Vancouver island
Read the description.
Ok thanks
No way! Both Spirits got new horns now. Wow!
The BC has had it since 2018 and the VI since 2019. They just never used them for whatever reason…
It used to be so quiet now it’s loud as .
It is a whistle, it’s supposed to alert boaters. The old one tone is still there for the mornings but during the day it’s better for boaters.
@@ferriesbc at least they warn you before they sound it.
@@mayahabelman3660 They still mostly use the quiet horns on these ships(BC & VI)
@@ferriesbc I was on the Spirit of BC during the middle of the day a few weeks ago and they were only using the quiet horn.

Amazing video man love it
The loud horn really suits the sheer scale of the S-Class ferries, the old one didn’t do her justice, horn sounded small.
Hope they fix the whistle so it hits all the notes, could you make another compilation of it in summer 2021?

That quiet horn is just stupid lol. People can barely hear it
It’s actually quite audible. You can hear it all over the island it’s just not very loud like the others. It resonates more than the others however.
