Oakland auditor blames 'lack of leadership' for crime-fighting grant blunder

- Poor leadership, management and communication; that's what Oakland's acting city auditor says is to blame for missing out on a crime fighting grant worth up to $15 million. Acting auditor Michael Houston reported the city of Oakland "prepared but did not successfully submit a grant."

1. Stop the catch and release.
2. Enforce the law.
3. Mandate the homeless use shelters and get them off the street.
Trying to stop crime in oakland is like putting a screen door on a submarine.
The problem is that the mayor and the DA are inept. They need to go ASAP.

so they want to create new positions or group just for grants. but if you didnt defund the PD you wouldnt need the grant. if there is a deadline why are they encouraging to submit early?
I bet that audit cost another $1MM just to conduct
The only thing they regret is that they can't put their hands on that money (officials couldn't pocket that money) 😢😢😢
It shows that addressing crime is not a priority for the current mayor. The moneyed interests are playing into the social justice infrastructure in Oakland, perhaps to buy up depreciated property. A couple decades from now, the community will have someone else to blame for their woes. Someone other than themselves, of course.

They are too incompetent and lazy to even waste money. That's like a thief who is too lazy to steal.
We needed a 37 page report for that? How much did that cost for a “6 month investigation”.
Even with that 15 million, would Oakland be any different than it is without it?
This misstep is unforgivable. Considering that much of the crime in Oakland is caused by a tiny fraction of the population, this money would have gone a long way to put criminals behind bars. Recall Thao and Price!
If you think those that commit crimes in oakland are a tiny fraction of the population, I've go some land there to sell you.

City of Oakland police are under Federal oversight -The Federal Government should have done the job(in part) for Oakland Police receiving the grant funds.
Funds are not necessary. Changes in behaviors are required. That's all.
Are you going to change the behavior of the criminals? As an Oakland resident I have zero faith that behaviors will spontaneously change for the better. Some people need to be locked up so that they change their behavior by force. I did nothing to deserve living in fear and constantly looking over my shoulder.
Behavior is learned from birth, and the government has no right to tell people how to raise their children. Once some teen is arrested it’s already too late.

this is true, how much money are we pumping in to crime prevention, and how much more do we need to continuing pumping into crime prevention? let look at other city and compare what we're putting in vs what we're getting out.

They should have a full-time and part time grant writer in each dept. Those positions pay for themselves. The afterschool program I worked for missed out on so much grant money, they all feel threatened by empowering people to apply forgrants in their name when it's a win/win scenario-especially of youhave someone who wants to do it.
