The problem with power limit ‘undervolting’ is that when a game or benchmark doesn’t fully utilise the gpu, there is no power saving compared to stock. Say, a game requires 65% gpu load. When using the powerlimit, the gpu will be running as stock. So, about 1050 mV at 2800 mHz. When using the voltage/frequency curve undervolt which has the same maximum performance as the 80+ powerlimit, it will run at about 950 mV and 2700 mHz. 80 watts less, with the same performance. This is what my testing concludes. So, using power limit is suboptimal, even when using +120 mHz core clock.

I enjoy undervolting. On my 3080, I undervolt and instead of consuming 300-350 watts by default. Which generates XXX amount of heat, which means the fans spin more, which creates more noise.
I undervolt, I get about 95% of the same performance, which is negligible to what I can see really. But only run 200-250 watts. Generating way less heat, which makes it a way quieter computer.

It's the best thing for many years, always preferred underpower to undervolt. The best thing to do is core oc + memory oc + temp limit (usually 65 degrees or lower, so as to have hot spots and memories at 75 degrees maximum in gaming and under stress, not mining. In short, adjust the temperature so as to have memories and hotspots at no more than 75 degrees).
So the PL is based on temperature but you have to remember to choose to prefer the temp limit to the PL in MSI afterburner.

Higher clock speed and slightly lower FPS sounds like the GPU correcting for instability. Sometimes in Overclocking, you’ll speed something up and get lower or equal performance and that’s an indicator of instability. There are some methods of error correction in BIOS and I don’t know what they are or how they work but they do result in lower than expected performance. Ex: if you add 200mhz to a CPU and it doesn’t crash but your cinebench score is 300 points lower than before, chances are you would be able to detect instability in a prolonged torture test

I use Msi Kombustor to check the Difference between Clock and effective Clock and make different Profiles in Afterburner
The Asus 3070EKWB i currently use has only 250w PL but with my Curves i can beat Cards with 300w+ because the Chip only needs 0.950v for 2000mhz instead of running into Powerlimit at 1.075v default...Insane Powerlimits are only good for Benching, for 24/7 you go with the Sweetspot.

@@juan-in3cw Using the curve editor I was able to set 950 mV to 2805 and 960 to 2850. When hitting apply it seemed to help flatten everything after 960 mV to the same value. I also added 1000 to the memory clock. Using unigine Heaven as a benchmark I saw modest improvement over stock. What was interesting was that at stock it didn't go north of 80% power often anyway. With stock at 70% power limit, sometimes it briefly went above the power limit. But after using the curve editor, regardless of power limit the card never hits 70% on this benchmark. So it's running at a consistent 2850 Mhz with 11501 Mhz memory with power usage in the %60s, temp is averaging around 60 c as well. Still don't know what I'm doing though, basically just copying him.

Does getting a high refresh 4k monitor in the future actually do anything when 4090 is hard locked to 4k 120Hz due to DP 1.4 ? No one has done a topic on this yet and I think it's a critical one that questions the future proofing ability of 4090

Even when I start by sliding my core clock as high as can without crashing and then start sliding the power limit back I can go down to 70% with seemingly no change in games I do notice the core frequency not remaining quite as steady resulting in slightly lower score in 3D Mark but it seems like something you are more likely to see in synthetics than normal gaming.

Thanks so much for your thoughts on this topic, super helpful. I noticed for your tests, that you are using a 850w power supply (which I know is what Nvidia recommends for a base line). I was curious what your thoughts are on people that are wanting a 4090 and needed power supply?
I have seen such a wide range of advice on this from 850w being enough to needing a bare minimum of 1250w power supply. I have a 1000w power supply and at the time I was purchasing it I wasn't considering a 4090, now I am. I would get a 4080, but knowing the dollar to value is so poor compared to the 4090, I want to just go for the 4090(assuming I can get it). But I fear I wont have enough power with 1000w(And a 7950x cpu) to run it without problems. Your videos give me hope, with just the base line for what power draw looks like out of the wall, our systems are not that different. I plan to seriously look into the undervolting you talk about in this video, assuming I can with a Asus motherboard. My machine is more for productivity (Motion design and hopefully 3D), gaming is secondary. Besides most of the games I enjoy playing these days are nothing new, so performance would almost be no different for me.
Thanks again for doing these videos.

Add +100 memory clock, run a scored benchmark, see it finish and note the score, then repeat until you see artifacts, the benchmark is unstable or the score begins to decrease. Then fine tune the exact peak score with repeats at +/- 25 mem clock.
And you should do this last, and separately from testing stability with power targets and voltages/core clocks.

Or the potential deficiency in the pci voltage regulator on the cards (opinion) via monitoring pci power vs voltage drop as measured/reported by the card (voltage drop more than desired, still within 5% spec but...).

But the temperatures are already low as standard in my opinion it does not make much sense especially on the 40/90 which is already a monster of Power.
Indeed I could say that in some games at 4k you lose a lot of FPS the fact of running the gpu at a lower voltage
