    To think those P2k locos are at least 20-30 years old, wow!.They still compare with anything now days

      It’s pretty crazy when you think about it: vintage models that, with a little TLC, can have a decoder and speaker installed. Currently working on a couple of first gen P2K that are so old they aren’t DCC ready yet have detail that rivals today’s offerings. Thanks for the feedback!

    Will be pleased to watch your progress on scenery, buildings etc. On small layouts , I find it best to have cars that are a max of being 50’ cars (except for an occasional bulkhead flat or center beam flat that is about 60’ long) that makes the layout seem larger.

      @@SouthDown The only other thing I would do is make the backdrop about 24” high. The small museum type opening is fine, but I think you miss something that way when viewing and filming. I know, unsolicited opinion given - for what it is worth.

      I appreciate the experience. I’m currently at 40 cm high or about 16 inches. This usually works well with my height or when I sit with a stool.

      Thanks! It's funny looking back at this video, which isn't that old at the time of writing this, yet nothing now looks like it. The green and black engine is now weathered. There are two more buildings. There is a road and three additional paved surfaces. The white is gone and while some wood is still visible, a good portion has already disappeared behind soil, gravel, grass. I started enjoying, inch by inch, the process of ballasting. The performance of the engines remains the same but acting out on a stage that more resembles their ideal setting makes it even more poignant and present. Thanks for your feedback!

    I'm slowly getting the hang of the shelf layout theme, and your suggestions have been quite helpful. Your work is incredibly neat, and you put a lot of effort into getting a good picture and sound.

    • @SouthDown

      You’re very kind with your generous feedback. I try to put on a good show but the suggestions are from Lance. I’ve only been following his advice. I’m looking forward to showing the demise of the black and green engine and the paved surfaces and structures that have since been rolled out.

    Tangent have recently released HO-scale pigeons that you could use in lieu of a rooster.

      I certainly hope they also make HO scale guano, so I can smear it down the side of the whichever building they'll decide to perch on! Thanks for the reply!

    Officer! That man! (pointing). He said he wants to see my Rooster! 😁
    I'm not picking on the builder or his layout in particular, but something about locomotive sound always seems off to me; like it's too loud for the scene, or the distance between the operator and the locos (yes I hear idling and moving diesels in the rail yard only 2 blocks from my house, but it's more muted). Or lacking the size of real locomotives the sound somehow makes the trains oddly more toylike. I've never quite figured it out (gee, really, ya think?!).

    • @SouthDown
      @SouthDown  Месяц назад +1

      You’re absolutely right! Even with the biggest speakers that would fit into those models, you’ll never get true-to-life sounds, so at some point you accept it versus no sound at all. Having said that, I’d like to try connecting a decoder directly to an amplifier with a subwoofer and see how that goes :)

      Thank you! It's actually funny that by the time this video went out so much more has happened on the layout. The warehouse grew, another warehouse popped up, a road is done, the team track is in place. Perhaps I'll showcase at the next switching video.
