My cottage border … planted densly to suppress weeds

- Here I’m showing my cottage border in naturalistic style - planted densly to suppress weeds. Bulb plants - daffodils, tulips and alliums - are growing together with perennials, shrubs and small trees. I’m telling how I’m planning a border and talk about colors, shapes, forms and repetition. And the best is, that I don’t need to weed, because seedlings don’t get space!
My name is Claus Dalby, and I live in Risskov on the outskirts of Aarhus in Denmark. To date, I have written about 30 books on flowers and gardens in Danish, and my garden has been featured on many TV shows. In March 2022 my first book in English will be available. I consider my home (built in1908), and its garden with its neighboring wood, as my sanctuary. When I started gardening in 1996, there was just a large lawn covering approximately 1 acre (4,000 square meters), but today the grass is long gone - replaced by 15 hedged rooms with varying colors and moods. Additionally, one of my great passions is growing in pots, arranged to create spectacular container gardens, which I will share quite a bit about on this channel. Decor and creating moods have always interested me - both outside and inside - and I love to use the flowers from my garden for bouquets and to inspire other crafts that create a sense of hygge.

So can we talk about how Claus Dalby coming to RUclips is one of the best things to have happen! 😩😍🌿
Definitely agree! I'm a huge fan, but now there are so few new videos! I wonder where Claus went?
I just love this border and really appreciate the focus on a few of the plants in it that you’re enjoying now. That Philadelphus is quite the stunner. But Claus, you must introduce us to your adorable pup, unless you are afraid that he or she will steal the show. 😀
I agree, he/she is adorable and really wanted to play some fetch!
Hi Erin, thank you so much. It’s a pleasure to be here on RUclips
Because Odin and Dorothy never, ever steal the show
Now l think my lawn has to go and all my boarders replanted. So inspiring! Thank you.
This is exactly how I want my garden to look full of flowers and no soil showing.
You Sir, are a garden genius! The Einstein of garden borders! I adore your voluptuous, ever evolving garden! Thank you for sharing it with us!
Claus I love your garden. I could just spend hours looking at everything. I love how tightly everything is planted and your spikey plants are gorgeous.
THANK YOU for adding closed caption. My mother, 98, loves watching but can’t hear well.
I am presently creating a cottage border.......planting densely to suppress weeds, thank you! Beautiful gardens!
COMPLEMENTING AND EMPHASISING
The white creamy cow parsley airey flowers that "float" above the lovely mix of perennials and bulbs knit the whole garden together and act as a calming counter foil to the exicting jumble of colours and shapes of all the flowers and foliage.
The straight edges of the borders and the pond and the confinement of the space work so very well in complementing and emphasising the naturalised and balanced look you've achieved.
I don't think I've seen any thing quite like this in a garden before; except that it reminds me of the energy and promise given of a wild deciduous woodland floor in the Springtime.
It's unique and magical.
What an ideal secret garden. I could spend every day not just enjoying the beauty of the garden but studying each and every flower, insect and plant! Garden artistry!
I love the “wild” look of your planned borders.
Your garden is stunning and I really love how you showed the previous months . Looking forward to seeing the next changes.
Hello from north Idaho USA. Love your videos Claus. Such beauty. What a tranquil garden to meander through. ❤️
You need your own tv show!🌸🌷🌼🌻🌺🌹
Your little friend was wanting to play ball. 😎
A truly stunning garden Claus you're so inspiring! That was a masterclass in horticulture
I have developed an appreciation for alliums as well. They look good any where in the garden.
Love the contrast provided by the Philadelphus coronarius Aurea and purple of Alliums
Good morning Claus. Your garden is spectacular. Please introduce us to your dog.
I love your gardens! So glad Garden Answer suggested your channel to us...
I am very much looking forward to seeing this border again in a few weeks. Thank you!
That's retriever behavior 😉 The dog will gently place the ball so that you can see it. Or they'll stand in front of you, wagging their tail hopefully. My sister's dog used to do that with her horse, hoping that the horse might one day throw the ball 😂 What a lucky dog to live in such beauty 💚
I have a huge garden and watch all utube gardens but yours is my favourite cause you show every few weeks and tell all names of plants ❤
What a lovely comment - thank you so much and thank you for being here.
Fabulous. U must introduce us to your cute doggy.
Can you imagine watching a video like this and doing thumbs down? Who is a person that would watch Claus, Lauren (garden answer), Erin (impatient gardener), Yuliya (Y garden) and many other great channels and feeling compelled to thumbs down?? No. I don’t believe it’s real people because these channels are pure joy and wonderful knowledge 🥰
Thanks for your kind words
thank you! that is so sweet for you to say ☺️
I love your lime green colours with all the purple flowers!
Thank you for giving this opportunity to see your garden. For a garden lover it is a real treat!
Greetings from Germany.
I think the cottage border is my favourite of your videos Claus
Pure joy! Thank you!
Such a beautiful garden space! Thank you for sharing with us, Claus.
Love the way the Ravenswing floats above the garden like a cloud. I'm trying to create a similar effect with verbena bonariensis except mine will be a blue cloud 😁
I’m using the same verbena to float above my little limelight hydrangeas!
Such an easy to grow plant too. It can become a bit weedy, as it self sows prolifically in my gardens.
I am so happy you are finally doing garden talks in English. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Dear Claus, this cottage border is so lady-like! The soft shades of pinks, yellows and a touch of blue. Each plant compliments the other. I can understand your joy in showing your hard work to us to enjoy. So you should share, such beauty and clear talks are so inspiring to all, young and old.
Hello from Texas. I am very much enjoying your amazing gardens. Thank you for sharing them with us. They make me smile.
Thank you for inviting us in to your heavenly garden.
Thank you for sharing names of flowers as they are different than US.
Thank you for showing your garden through different stages of growth.
I love the frothy exuberance of it all. Like a beautiful meadow - but more.
I love all of the variety! It has almost a wild look, but like a very tamed wild garden.
OMG Claus! So glad to see that you started a RUclips channel! YAY!!!!!
A walk in heavens garden. Pure beauty. Thank you for sharing your lovely garden. Looking for to more. 💕👍
Beautiful Claus. Well done sir
Simply put, Eden on earth.
With the extremely hot weather, we are all sleeping in the living room, the coolest room in the house so I have to watch your video without sound. I couldn't wait to watch your video as soon as you post, I'll have to rewatch the video laterwith sound. Your garden is amazing and I was imaging how the flowers must smell. Your dog is really well-behaved, the dog stays in the walk way and patiently waits for someone to throw the ball.
Time for a good set of earbuds! I watch and listen to Claus.... and Laura of course, every morning while my hubby sleep next to me. Perfect start to the day!
So bummed Claus didn't introduce us to the dog. Since Laura and Aaron take off on Sundays, nice to have Claus post his video today.
Sleeping in the living room on hot summer nights ...... brings back childhood memories of doing same ...... long before the first window AC unit was bought ...... which went in my parents' bedroom window ...... mom was ill that summer ..... after that we would pile in with pillows and a blanket and camp out on the bedroom floor making sure mom had a path to the door ..... didn't want to get stepped on ........ how did we ever survive with out AC ...... How did my parents survive the summer heat without AC ...... both were farm kids (born 1920 and 1926) ..... the most they had to get cool was to hang out in the spring house along with little black snakes, toads and bugs ......
@@tinydancer7426 we survive without AC just fine (zone 6b). 😉 It’s a matter of timing - when to let the outside air in and when to shut it out. Of course if you’ re in a hotter climate, it’s hard
@@aksileb The "how did they/we survive" was rhetorical. Obviously we and she survived. Yeah, my mom employed all the trick of the mother trade of shading windows, fans, tossing the kids in the bathtub to play in some water, playing in the basement on the tiled concrete floor, etc. But, I still stand in my wonderment when I think of my mom and dad both growing up on farms without electricity to run electric fans, still dependent on actual ICE boxes and spring houses to keep perishable foods as cold as possible, little to no insulation in the homes to help keep out the heat (or cold in winter) ...... and my grand parents and great grand parents (and further back), particularly the women, having to contend with the heat and oppressive humidity while wearing those long skirts AND THE REQUISITE PETTICOAT, during the summer heat. There were no SHORT SLEEVED blouses in those days for women to wear ...... sure they could and did roll up the sleeves, but it was not
seemly" to do so in their social circles (yes, farm folks had a "social" circle) ...... and it was worse for my dad's mother ..... she was a preacher's wife and had an "image" that expected to be adhered to ...... which meant sleeves down, even when standing over a wood fueled cook stove in the middle of the summer, not to mention ironing clothes with sad irons heated on the top of that stove, and all of the other cleaning.
Wow, every season is amazing! If we add drama for every season then we don’t need to worry so much about weeds.
Your border is beautiful Claus. It looks natural and yet orderly---very pleasing. I saw several tree trunks planted in there and was wondering what kind of trees are planted so that they don't over-shade the whole area. Thank you for sharing your lovely space with us!
Cottage boarder is beautiful 🌷❤️🌷❤️
Fabulous! Thank you so much for taking the time to show us your garden ❤
The pleasure is all mine - thank you for being here.

I love your borders and I believe your heart is really that of a florist. The Gardener in you is there to supply the Florist in you 🌹💕🌹

I love the slow moving camera shots of the garden at the end. It gives a chance to take it in without words, and my eyes pick out flowers that I must have in my garden based on how it makes me feel. My “Claus Dalby” plant wishlist continues to grow!
Mine too!
Such a beautiful evening walk! I would give anything to have that peaceful evening walking. Again, thank you for sharing your breathtaking garden to us. It's such a peaceful stress reliever.

Your cottage border is stunning 💖🏡🌳
,
Thank you so much for the tour. Your plans for the channel are ideal as it is very helpful to see seasonal changes.
Can you show us the trees and shrubs that work in a dense border like this
Thank you Claus for a lovely tour.
I’m also very fond of shrubs within perennial beds. Your garden is beautiful in all seasons.
Thank you for sharing the plant names. It is very helpful! What an incredible space!
Thank you so much. Could you also start listing the flowers in your garden? I especially love your cottage garden and would love to utilize some of the beautiful flowers and shrubs you have planted. Happy gardening!
It was surprising to see that so many of your lovely plants here grow wild around my house; some classed as weeds and difficult to keep in one place. In this contest they are perfect, and you have made me re-think my attitude to 'difficult' borders so thank you Claus.
The pleasure is all mine - thank you for watching my video.
The poodle is sweet
Simply beautiful, thank you for sharing this with us. Your dog was the highlight! I’m guessing he/she is a poodle?
Very exciting to see the transformations in your garden as the season progresses.
Margie waterman and John Waterman we are getting so much rain now in the Midwest and cannot wait until we can get back into our gardens in the meantime drawing inspiration from gardeners like you!
No room for weeds, love this garden ,and all his other plantings.
Your borders are BEAUTIFULLY done! Your dog is precious! Your videos are such a pleasure to watch! Thank you for sharing your love of gardening!
Variety, that's the theme in your garden. I love wild varieties along with the cultivated varieties. 🥰 I love the music too.

Wish I was there to walk through your garden, and play with sweet doggy!!!!! love, hugs, prayers.
So beautiful flowers in your garden.
Claus, thank you for sharing your border with us...beautiful arrangement of plants with a variety of colors and shapes that really catch the eye. Watching your channel from Louisville, KY, USA
Such a beautiful garden and lots of mixed colors and a great ideas to grow them densely to prevent weeds.
Claus you inspire me.
How lovely. So lush 💕
Beautiful Klaus, thanks for sharing your gorgeous garden with an avid Australian gardener.
Really enjoyed the walk in the garden. Would love to see the canopy of trees over this garden. Thank you for this visit.
I also love plants "that look like they are dancing above the border." Beautiful cottage borders!
