Still, it is best that it stood. It is an old house, new houses built in past twenty years can withstand this one. This building’s flaw is its weak design on the point of the V shape, so that’s why you see the building tilted towards the glass wall side.
I am in Taipei on a business trip. This morning's quake is the strongest among the many I've experienced while traveling to Taipei for work. However, we are having endless of high-energy aftershocks, of at least 4 that was so severe that it has to be a 5 or 6. The aftershocks have continued for the last 7 hours.... literally one every few minutes or even every few seconds. This is unusual for Taiwan's "normal" earthquakes. A lot of cracked walls, fallen bricks and damaged waterpipes in Taipei. I truly hope everyone is OK...
@@brendachilders4879 Thank you! Taiwan does have modern seismic-related building codes similar to Japan. However, in the middle of core Taipei and many outline communities, the buildings are 30/40+ years old and they were not built to modern standards. As such in many of the busy parts of Taipei - you see old building next to new buildings. I am staying in a hotel of older build, 10 floors up, and it was a frightening experience. The higher floors definitely get the effects of all the shakes.

Don’t worry too much. Earthquakes are part of life in Taiwan. Major earthquakes in Taiwan occur roughly every 25 years. The 921 earthquake in 1999 was the biggest earthquake I’ve ever experienced. The epicenter was in Nantou, and the quake was so powerful that it caused the ground to arch up to the height of two stories. The second floor became the first floor, and the first floor was buried underground like a basement. After 25 years, the Hualien earthquake occurred, but based on time estimates, it might be another 25 years before we encounter another earthquake over magnitude 7. After the release of energy, Taiwan is actually safer. Experienced numerous major earthquakes, Taiwan's buildings have become more robust. Big earthquakes expose the shoddy workmanship in buildings, causing poorly constructed columns to break. During the 921 earthquake, some buildings in Taichung had columns that broke, revealing the use of gasoline barrels as a substitute for steel reinforcement, leading to the arrest of many unscrupulous builders. Now, few builders dare to cut corners.

7.4 is still huge, but obviously 7.8 is stronger! Where were you and when did it happen? I live in Southern California so I’ve been through many, but never that big thankfully!
I was in one smaller on a second story and it was still scary af. Remember just grabbing my son and my husband grabbing us and holding us till it passed because there was no way we'd be able to make it down the stairs with how bad it was shaking

In Taiwan and other Asian nations it has been common to wear masks when sick for a long time (for example I saw it all the time when I lived there in 2011). This is a practice that more than predates the pandemic and has nothing to do with covid. It’s considered polite and is just a different cultural practice. Similar to how when someone sneezes we might say “bless you”; this has nothing to do with feelings around covid- it’s just a thing we do.
Alex called it right, Sasq. I have spent quite a bit of time in the Far East, and I observed the custom that he describes - _long before_ there was COVID.

I wish you safety. The initial pictures are graphic. Does Taiwan have the same earthquake building codes as Japan? Thank you for updates.

這座傾斜的建築是上次6級多地震的危樓,在台灣拆除房屋價格太昂貴。一般正常的房子7.3級的地震不會倒,但是很可怕,我是921地震倖存者😢
The accident brought tears to every eye

So it can. That other, taller, reddish wedge-shaped building is not far away, at the south end of Xuanyuan Road.
Prayers 🙏
