      Check out the Default Settings category if you want to see speedruns on a random seed: www.speedrun.com/factorio#Default_Settings
      As for races, AntiElitz's channel (commentator on this GDQ run) has a lot of speedrunner races, sometimes with wacky settings: ruclips.net/video/lLWsx1bkAgw/видео.html

      Many of the speedrunners do default settings and random seed runs and those are really fun. You can actually see them plan almost everything while looking at the map preview before they make the world, Ive also seen a few of them join a random seed without looking at the map for more challenge.

    I don't agree with the statement that you should look at cost per hour to determine how cheap a game is. You need to look at cost per enjoyment. If you love games like this, thirty dollars is a drop in the bucket, especially considering total enjoyment accumulates over time, but I think shorter games can have incredible value if their runtime is especially enjoyable, though. After all, people will gladly spend ten dollars to see a movie that's an hour and a half long. If you spend thirty dollars on a game that only lasts four and a half hours long, that's like seeing three movies. If you enjoy the game at least as much as you enjoy movies, and you're willing to spend that kind of money on movies, then by that metric the game was well worth the money.
    That all said, games that cost thirty dollars typically (though not always) last much longer than four and a half hours. I think the worst cost-to-runtime ratio I've seen in a game was Gorogoa, a game that costs fifteen bucks that I finished in about an hour, which compares pretty unfavorably to movies. That said, that game was also beautiful, more so than any movie I've seen, so the money was worth it. The point I'm trying to make is that looking purely at cost per hour is kind of shallow.

    54:03 I wonder if chat can help the run attempt by giving advice, does that not give people who have a large following a potentially unfair advantage? I can see why it's a rule, if one small mistake out of thousands of actions can kill a run, but it introduces an outside element. At a certain level of skill, you might have a chance of better runs by building up your streaming business and getting followers than actually practicing the speedrun itself.

    • @Viper607706
      @Viper607706 3 года назад

      It does have diminishing return, you do also get trolls that try to mess with you and so a big following isnt desireable. Having ten peeps watching and reminding you to place a power pole is kind of ideal. You can end up wasting a bunch of time chasing ghosts otherwise.

    Question. Since this isn't explicitly a glitchless category, even if the devs do a great job at fixing them immediately, doesn't it still allow for someone to find a glitch, record a WR using it, THEN report the glitch, wait for it to get patched, and then submit the run, thus basically bricking the category unless you find a better glitch?

    • @Sandromatic
      @Sandromatic 3 года назад +1

      Most games speedrun communities let you go back to an old version if it's faster if not explicitly banned. No idea about factorio but I assume that if there's glitches found that actually make things faster then you can downgrade to an older version if you want.

    • @joshbored15
      @joshbored15 3 года назад

      What's the point in setting a record time if nobody can compete with it? There's no prize for being a world record holder, the scene would most likely just ignore your run andd carry on

    • @crazydude610
      @crazydude610 3 года назад

      I assume that the Speedrun would then be version dated, if it manages to save you 3 minutes I assume it would be valid because it isn't glitchless. Unless the speed running forum has rules on that.

    • @unique_two
      @unique_two 3 года назад +1

      From the game rules: • Runs that used bugs that become fixed in later versions may be invalidated depending on the bug, on a case by case basis that anyone can open.
      Every category in Factorio is glitchless. We also haven't had any bugs that made the game faster to run in the time that I've followed speedruns.

    • @Kihanacloudy
      @Kihanacloudy 3 года назад +1

      WR runs require documentation to be accepted, I.E., video proof; moderators would review the footage and recognize the use of glitches no longer in the game and, likely, flag the run as invalid before it's even publicly viewable. Either that, or move it to a different category. People who moderate speed games are usually highly knowledgeable on that specific game and are not compensated positions- so there's no likelihood of someone being unable to notice foul play, nor corrupt enough to let it slide.

    • @etienneschramm83
      @etienneschramm83 3 года назад +3

      When you build a base, especially a megabase, it is not uncommon to let it run for hours when you are AFK. There are mainly two reasons : in the building phase, some components you need a large quantity of are very expensive (modules, in particular), and in the late phase, it is the only reliable way to put light on the potential bottlenecks.
      These hours can be counted in the total game time. Maybe that's a part of the explanation.

    • @abebuckingham8198
      @abebuckingham8198 3 года назад +4

      I've owned the game for just over two weeks and I have 210 hours already. The assumption that you'll only be playing for 8 hours a day is the mistake you're making here. People like me who don't work have a lot of free time on our hands.
