- Imagine seamless upshifts without using the clutch or rolling off the throttle. Sounds fun, right? Well, that’s exactly what quickshifters allow you to do, and we’re going to explain how they work in this video from the MC Garage.
--
Like radial brake calipers, single-sided swingarms, and inverted forks, motorcycle quickshifters were born at the track from a desire for faster lap times. In recent years this tech has trickled down to the street, bringing clutchless up-and-down shifting to the masses. In all honesty, it's a completely unnecessary feature for the street, but damn if it isn't entertaining and addicting.
How Does A Quickshifter Work?
Normally to shift gears you'd roll off the throttle slightly and pull in the clutch, because the transmission needs to be unloaded for the cogs in the gearbox to slide into the next position. With a quickshifter, that momentary unloading of the transmission is achieved by manipulating the ignition spark. Here's how it works: There's a sensor integrated into the shift linkage that detects when the shifter moves and cues the bike's ECU to interrupt spark. So right as you're toeing the shifter there's a milliseconds-long cut in power that lets those gears down in the transmission shift over on their shafts, no clutch or throttle blip required.
What Are The Benefits Of A Quickshifter?
Clutchless upshifting may only take a split second, but those half-seconds add up when you're racing. With a quickshifter, upshifts happen so fast that drive is essentially uninterrupted, so you can grab a gear while transitioning between corners or even while you're banked over exiting a turn. Quickshifters also free up attention since shifting goes from being an action that requires at least two precisely timed, synchronized motions to one independent movement.
Factory And Aftermarket Quickshifters
On the street, none of that stuff really matters, but a quickshifter is still a fun, convenient feature, and an easy way to make any bike feel sportier. Manufacturers are fitting them to everything from naked bikes like the Vitpilen 701 to touring bikes like the K1600, and there are plenty of aftermarket options.
Dynojet offers the Dynojet Quick Shifter (DQS) that works in conjunction with its fuel-controller kits. Bazzaz makes accessory kits for pretty much every bike, and you can get the Quick Shift as a stand-alone module or as part of a kit.
The Drawbacks Of Using A Quickshifter
Some people say quickshifters are for lazy riders, but if you’re not a fan of quickshifters, that’s likely because you haven’t tried one yet. They really are fun. The only downside to using a quickshifter regularly is that your clutch and throttle finesse are likely to get rusty, which is a legitimate concern.
Also, as with clutchless shifting, the smoothness of the shift is somewhat dependent on engine speed. Some engines just don’t quickshift well at lower rpm and it makes the ride uncomfortable. Luckily, most aftermarket kits-like the Dynojet Quick Shifter and Bazzaz Quick Shift unit-let you adjust the ignition cut time and sensor sensitivity so you can dial in the best performance for the way you ride.
What About Downshifting And Auto-Blippers?
And if you're wondering about auto-blip downshifting, that's the cutting edge of electronically enhanced gear changes. Like quickshifting, auto-blip lets you downshift without using the clutch. It's available on a few bikes and there are aftermarket kits, but the bikes have to have a ride-by-wire throttle so that the system can electronically auto-blip the throttle plates. It's seriously trick stuff and likewise, a lot of fun to use.

I love how informative these videos are. Up and down quickshifer is going to be my next R1 mod.
Death Wish83 auto blip man
quickshifer and auto blipper
cant have your quickshifter go down without an autoblipper as well
i must agree a quick shifter is a lot of fun, my cbr1000rr sp also has an auto bliper now that is so good, it has transformed my street riding, it gives you as a rider more time to improve riding skills, body position, braking. As an old biker it has breath new life into my riding here in Thailand
I just got my first bike with a factory up and down and it feels like a bit of an evolution in riding mechanics. It changes what it takes for me to teach someone to ride, I know that. The casual, mid-corner shift is just so easy now. What a blessing, thank you Mr Kawasaki.
I have a buddy who rides S1000RR. I've been riding along with him and hearing the sound of the quickshifter is so addictive. The pops and bang of the quickshifter make is just so beautiful...
So it’s basically turning your bike into a semiautomatic?
What’s a semi automatic?
Yes
I would have a quick shifter if I do track days or race my bike all the time but in city and long distance touring totally unnecessary. I tried it and is an amazing piece of kit but I don't want a semi automatic bike. Just my opinion.
@@BelfastBikerbasically any car with paddle shifters is a semi automatic, no clutch but you need to tell it when to shift
@@BelfastBikera auto car with variable shifting mode
Great video. I mainly use my quick shifter on my R1200GS to downshift in corners if I'm wanting a little more engine braking. And it is fun.
I have a quick shifter on my MT09 and I love it. At low speeds I use the clutch even though the QS works. To me it is now an essential bit of kit. Sounds great too on full bore.
It doesn’t come standard?
@@marcosalarcon3341 it comes as standard on MT09 now!
Please cover Cornering ABS vs normal ABS
aaaaah this is a super good idea! there can also be quite the variation in normal ABS systems. Some of them are tuned extremely conservatively...annoyingly so. Some cut in before your wheel actually slips. Others are better. Honestly, there is so much room for improvement in ABS. The current systems cycle so slowly. They are easily beatable by an experienced rider (in a non-panic scenario)....but they're there for when you panic!
yes please!
@@skunkhollow1 yes please
@@DearMajesty
Just like drive by wire throttle.
It's so nice to ride something with a throttle cable occasionally and realize how much delay dbw has.
@@MrTheHillfolk yeah crazy how much smoother some old school throttle cabled bikes feel
Yey, at least Motorcycle Magazine understands me. Girls still not..
Lol😂
My wife/pillion seriously enjoys the quickshifter, no more bobblehead back and forth................................
What the hell 😂
hahahaha
KRAL VİDEO AT
Love my down blippers and quickshifters! Can’t believe even a 790duke comes with a decent up and down now :)
Yes quick shifter works great, feeling very engaging to ride. Great addition on any street bikes.
Short, sweet, and straight-forward. Perfect.
I just cannot get enough of Ari and Zach's Videos! MC Commute and MC Garage are lifelines. Just went over to the Motorcyclist web page to see if there was any way to get MC gear like the t-shirts they usually sport but alas no go! Are they staff-only apparel?
Hi from the UK! Excellent delivery, informative and I learned a couple of things too. Subscribed!
I've had one on the last 3 bikes I have owned. On thw street they are a great saver of your clutch hand on long journeys qhen you end up in irritating traffic situations. They're not just about the track, although they're so much more fun there
Great Video again, like all the other ones befor! Your doing a great Job there!
But i still remember the Video in which you told about harmless wheelies, i'd love to lern the right tecnique from someone as knowledgeabel and responsible as you guys are!
Greetings from Germany
This was great! I share this video with people who rent my bikes that have quick shifters
I love my quick shifter, I love to do regular shift with the clutch too, when I'm am just cruising... But when its time to race that shit is fun
Ya it's the only time I'll power shift when it's go time, cruising after 45 year's of using a clutch becomes muscle memory.
So you can still use clutchshift when cursing around the city
Got spoiled with the s1000rr. Cant imagine riding a motorcycle without a quickshifter again
try one of automatic transmission hondas. i was making so much fun of them and now i feel like not riding sport bikes again
SLAV agreed lol adds a whole new fun to riding and the noise it makes, it’s addictive
My first experience was a 1290 SDR demo ride, full throttle from about 30 to 100 mph. Bang bang bang. Wheeeew! what a rush.
Is it damaging to the bike to not use the quickshifter if you have it?
@@jakemandel92 as long as you're shifting properly it's perfectly safe
Very good video, you drew my attention with those crazy backwards leans at the beginning of every sentence.
Thanks brotha, so good to hear what new... and that your new aprilia kicks freakin a**! 😈💜👍
Informative and simply said. Nice forearms too🔥🔥
Great vid! Very informative
Simple but perfect. Thank you very much
very well-explained, thanks!
i love these videos, keep it up dudes
Good job! Never thought I would want one till after riding a few bikes with them. Though they are a bit pricey.
Great video as always.
thanks for the effort and the sharing. i was never clear on "slipper clutch". thanks in advance. thumbs up.
i know you asked for the video but i might as well try to explain, slipper clutch works in a way that it prevents the rear wheel lock when aggressively downshifting.
if you're on 3rd gear and downshift to a 2nd, the rear wheel will have more rotation than the engine is providing, causing the rear wheel to lock while the engine is trying to keep up.
on a slipper clutch, when this happens the clutch is mechanically engaged to avoid the rear wheel to lock
Good shit. Always on point. As mentioned, there are definitely some motorcycles that just don't like quickshifters....especially at high RPM. My Versys 650 doesn't really like clutchless upshifting at lower RPM. It has a rather clunky and quite stiff gearbox. Most bikes will happily do it at higher RPM's though
Very informative, thank you! 👍
exactly what i needed thanks man !!
Mc garage you missed me so much! I'm a vary big fan from Italy, and I owe to you all my skills!
You could make some video on aftermarket! Like from mounting led blinkers, to playing with acu!!
I hope to see new material very soon, best wishes!
Great timing with this subject, was just thinking about getting one. I don't know anything on or about blipping but am going to look it up now. I have ride by wire. Thanks again MC Garage
You got one?
I'd love you to explain why Zack always talks about changing the gearing!
So cool! I should really try one of these on my next road bike!
Have a quick shifter/blipper on my 22 and 24 s1000rr and LOVE it
I just got my KTM 790 Duke delivered. It has quickshift up and down with autoblip. It really is fun to use!
Very informative. Thank You
I just bought the brand new 2023 Yamaha mt-10 sp and it's the first quickshifter I've owned and it really is amazing
Informative as usual.
its absolutely tru. my new yamaha tracer gt with qs convinced me about it!! to need to try
A channel worth subscribing and a video worth liking! Great job :). Got a query though, any thoughts on the quick shifter on the Aprilia RS 150?
I tried one yesterday on the triumph street triple 765 RS absolutely addictive
Remember...”Shift happens”... 😏
So true. I have a GS and I love my quick shifter
Another mystery cleared today. 🤔Had been wondering how quick shifters work. Is it just mechanical or electronic thing? Thanks for making this video. 👍
There's no such word as addicting!it's addictive!
Great video. My 22 busa has one
I'm so used to my quickshifter up and down on my tuono factory that it was a must in my next bike that's why I got the ktm adventure s 👍🏽
LOL, you are totally wrong, Quickshifters are a must on normal streets as well😁 After having a test ride on a ZX-10R I was convinced. I do not know how riding is possible w/o.
Hii Ari,
As usual videos from MC garage r both informative and fun to watch. Could you make a video on how to find out the worn valve seats and crankshaft?. I have faced these issues on my CBR 250 and couldn't find till I opened up the block.
Love my quickshifter. Never do track again without one.
Test rode an MT-09 SP the other day - first time I've ridden a bike with a quickshifter. Came in handy on the 'on-slip' (entrance) road to the motorway. Also I seem to have a habit of realising that I'm in too low a gear when I'm mid-overtake, so it'll be handy then. Ordered the bike after test ride, but those are the only 2 scenarios where I can see myself using the quickshifter.
Thank you for this topic. 🙂
Haha, I'm working on my license atm and shifting up is actually the most fun part. I'd prefer quick shifting down for stop lights and stuff. I'm still pretty jerky there 😅
Well . . . at the risk of being controversial, let me inform you about a definite negative to quickshifters.
Triumph have been fitting them for some time and my Speed Triple RS had the option from new and my S1000RR has one as standard. The problem comes when on the rare occasion you hit a false neutral when changing gear. This has never happened to me on my S1000 but the 1050 motor on the Speed Triple is occasionally prone and in particular, if you aren't firm with the shift lever. Now consider the scenario with a quick shifter fitted. As you change up, the ignition momentarily cuts and unloads the gearbox but because you weren't positive enough, instead of selecting the next gear, you are now in a false neutral but with the throttle pinned. The next stage of this mechanical armageddon is the power comes back on line as the ignition reconnects. The dogs are scrambling desperately to connect but can't do so because the speed mismatch is so high until all of a sudden, the graunching and knocking terminates in an almighty bang as the required gear slams under full load. This has cost Triumph a whole load of new gearboxes under warranty, indeed, in most instances they didn't bother repairing the box but merely replaced the whole bike. Don't believe me . . .go on the Triumph owners forum and do a search on broken gearboxes from quickshifters!!! I'm not saying for one moment that all bikes with a quickshifter will grenade their boxes and my S1k has been fine to date but I'm sparing in my use of the QS. Would I touch one on a Triumph?? . . . not a chance in hell - your bike is a two-wheeled IED just waiting to grenade itself. Research it properly before fitting one. Other than that, have fun with your quickshifter!!!!
Brilliant stuff 😉
Great explanation
You don't need quickshifters here in Philippines since under bones here are popular, ranges from 100 cc to 125cc, they're pretty comfortable, but they don't speed much
Still... Thanks for the information about quickshifters
I noticed that most racing videos change gears without the clutch and researched how they did it
good explanation!
Make a video on shorter gearing ratios and Taller gearing ratios.!!!.
Please.
It's just leverage and fulcrums...
why?
why? less teeth in the rear (or more in the front) decrease acceleration but increase top speed, to a certain extend ofcourse and vice versa
there's nothint more to say
Yep
Thats a sprocket setup and not a gear ratio joren vangoethem
Exelent explanation!! Thank you "Mister MC garage" ❤🍀
Love my Healtech Quickshifter.
Hi Ari, I hope you are well
I have one of the best quick shifters one of the best designs ever made, the toe on my left foot, Made by GOD and utilized to perfection by me!
Hey just joshing, good video always enjoy your presentation style;
All the best from England
Make a video on different types of suspension adjustments on a bike
For front forks and as wellfor the rear mono suspension by Ohlins or etc etc
Would be really helpful!
Nice intro logo bung, incredible
May i ask if quick shifter is good & ok to use everyday in city traffic road?
Another advantage of quikshifters is your oil stays alot cleaner due to the lack of clutch fibres contaminating the oil from not having to use the clutch
I thought people would hate this so I am kinda caught off guard. If they took the clutch pedal away from our manual cars, there would be riots. But I guess motorcycles are different... or the people are different... .
I'd love to see a video on changing your gearing from standard to GP.
It’s different on every bike but the same idea and would be a 39 second video: flip the knuckle that the shift linkage attaches to.
Just got a GSX S1000 that came stock with auto blipper and quick shifter. Pretty cool stuff.
I shifted quickly from cathub as soon as i knew this episode was on...
Whenever I watch your videos about Versus Versus stuff, I feel so freakin down that my bike is useless😢
Thanks for your sharing 👍
I don't even know how to ride a bike but still this video is very informative 😂😂
This technology has been out for decades. Vw used it on the clutch on the semi automatic transmissions in the 60's. When you grabbed a gear it sensed the gear change and disengaged the clutch.
Thanks... that was what I was wondering...... and I wonder no more. ☺️
I’ve never used one, curious that downshifting is a different solution. Thanks for the explanation 👍
nice and clear , Than you !
I’m glad Kawasaki implemented downshift for the 2020 model. It works awesome. My 2017 10r was upshift only.
Oh so for dwn shifting you would have to use clutch etc ?
Best explanation
If your old carpenter's hands are sore with arthritis and pulling a clutch lever three hundred times a day is painful and limits riding, there's nothing superfluous about quickshifters and related upgrades.
I never thought I'd consider an "auto" trans on a bike but nowadays, my wife's NC700X DCT is looking more and more attractive.
Well, a quickshifter on my own bikes is starting to look like a medical necessity. I've never much shifted without the clutch but I'm starting to do it as the cartilage gets scarcer.
So quickshifter for the upshifts... but then, what about using one on, say, my FJR1300 (Gen 2) and then self-blipping on the downshifts? Will that work?
Or, the Missus' other bike, a Ninja 650 she had fitted with a Rekluse auto-clutch; that could be a good thing, too, and even I dispensed with the clutch lever during a brutal in-traffic ride home. Yeah, I'd vowed never to use it, but the hand was calling for Advil and that's not a good solution. Self-blipping downshifts? I'm ready to try it.
Old. It happens, or you don't get old.
Please make a video about rebuilding inverted forks
I kinda have filosophical issue with this. And I've tried quicksifter couple of times.
I mean mastering clutch and throttle on up/downshifts is in my opinion part of the fun. It's little like manual cars. I've never tried a car that was more _fun_ with autobox. And I'm not talking about laptimes or performance, that's totaly different case.
I'm not particulary good driver, but I generally want to become better at all things I like.
See, I don't get how people think a quickshifter totally removes the clutch from riding a motorcycle. There's more use of a clutch then just shifting up and down...
You don't even need the clutch to shift, you can just roll of the throttle and click it into the next gear. In fact, on dirt bikes the main purpose of a clutch is setting off and modulating power, not shifting.
Yeah, and you can manage quite far without clutch if you have to. Dropped bike on mud few years back and broke clutch leaver :/.
And I don't have anything against quicksifters per se, I just don't get how they make driving more fun.
Matti Sillanpää you can upshift quicker, and whilst at full throttle. What's not fun about that? And on my bike with a full exhaust system it crackles when I shift up using the QS. It sounds awesome and it's also alot easier around town.
Maybe in a near future, motogp races will use fully automatic bike
Litre scooter maybe
Hi, could you do a series of videos on handling dynamics of the bike, why does a phenomenon occurs and how to troubleshoot it.
Eg. bike pulls to one end while hard braking and downshifting.
Or tends to shoot the rear end out on left corner yet feels stable on right corners.
Well a lot of similar dynamics comes into play, a little troubleshooting advice and what to look for tips would really help out. Thanks.
QS is allot of fun. I don't use it all the time. But like I said its just fun and smooth as heck on my 2019 Yamaha MT10
man I just bought my zx-6r guys that sold it to me never told me I had a qs...I bought a new ninja ex300 abs 3 years ago before this so qs is completely new to me. I've got barely 20 miles on the bike and I was wondering why I was losing speed every up shift lol...now knowing this I wanna jump on it and try it out so bad...it's raining and dark out side ne tires imma wait be safe...
man you don't need to let off gas nor clutch??? that's crazy and so cool. love your video's btw
Awesome!
Thanks for this video.
Can you guys make a video to explain how honda DCT works? and if the time it takes to change gear can be change? (sort of slow from factory)
Good info.. 👍
Can you make a "MC riding tips" video series? luv u
Now I know. Thx MC Garage :)
If you are a pro course racer it is a must have now
I got the factory quickshifter with my 2017 R6... Its not a fan of low speeds, but otherwise, man that sound when shifting with the throttle wide open, damn!!
Concept cleared.
Great vid,any chance of doing something on engine type (twin, triple, 4 pot etc.) characteristics and how manufactures use different technology to make engines more distinctive?
You saying addicting sent me on a massive Google spiral 😂
Addicting Addictive arghhh time to figure out where to use which word
Both are applicable 👍🏻
And of course we must remember an early incarnation of this introduced in 1958 Triumph TR6-C's. (Slick Shift option) I bought one new in early 1959 and it worked flawlessly but was superfluous to the bike's optimum operation, not contributing anything to the performance but merely allowing clutchless shifting on the move and as long as you kept the lever toed down in 1st. You could sit at a stop-light and fake out the person in the next lane by using your left hand to do some innocuous activity like picking your nose, thereby making him believe you hadn't yet put 'er in gear - light goes green, you grab some throttle, allow your foot pressure off the gear lever - et-voila you're outta there with a juanty left-handed wave (preferably a non-booger attached one) at your opponent as you go up through the gears using only your foot.
My K1600 has both quick shifting up and auto blipping down, yes its awesome! (BMW calls it gear shift assist pro)
Good to know about the bmw thank you!
