- Got this 45 the other day and I noticed there is no high quality recording version of this online. This is uploaded under fair use and for nostalgia purposes nothing more. For those who were around during Channel 4's launch back in 1982. As I was born in 1993 I didn't experience the launch myself lol.
I recorded the headphone input from my Marantz 2225 Receiver Whilst the record played on my Sansui XR-Q7 Quartz locked turntable. - Видеоклипы
RIP Martin Lambie-Nairn :(
“Good afternoon. It’s a pleasure to be able to say to you: Welcome to Channel Four.”
Seems like it was only yesterday, we first heard those words and I can remember all remember all the expectation and excitement of the launch of Channel 4. Happy days.
Channel 4 did return that phase when they rebranded in 2022 then in 2023 they made the Channel 4 logo green a neon green
this is the best piece of music, based on just 4 notes and various great musical rifts that are divine. and i was just 15 when channel 4 came to tv's everywhere. and now i'm 53 and still love channel 4 to this very day, well done to the great David Dundas for composing this superb masterpiece.
I’m the same age as you and I remember at the age of 15 I installed a new aerial on our roof in anticipation of Channel 4 coming. This brings back great memories. Don’t forget Fourscore 2.
Fabulous. I remember rushing home from work to see the new channel opening up. It was exciting. Today, we wouldn't notice, or even if we did notice, we aren't that interested in new TV channels opening up. In those days, new channels promoted a real identity.
channel 4 was groundbreaking at launch and a real breath of fresh air
Here's to another 40 years of groundbreaking television, I hope! There's nothing like Channel 4, happy birthday!
Now I want this to be on CD and Cassette!
Happy 40th Birthday Channel 4
Beautiful ❤️
I was born in 83,
But I remember everything from channel 4's early years with the moving 3d coloured blocks. It's crazy how deep our memories can go back.
Thank you! You've done a great service to humanity!
I was around in 1982. I Remember the launch day well. I was watching the station launch at the time. I think I also watched the first Countdown and Brookside programmes. I loved the ident visual and the music. Great opportunity to hear the piece in full. For years before this channel we only had 3 stations; BBC1, BBC2 and ITV. They didn't start normal programming until the mid-afternoon. Prior to that, in the morning, it was the engineer's test card or information films. Good old days. To see a test card just search BBC test card.
AIRWAVE ORCHESTRA - FOURSCORE (THE CHANNEL 4 THEME) - 1982
I remember it well a kid making sure I was on home from school on time. No one believed me at home that we had a new tv channel. You had to keep on tuning into the signal ready for launch so that you were on the right signal. Not like now where everything is done for you. In those days you had to turn the knob left or right and that’s how you turned tv those days. You had to make sure that the the dial was dead centre on the signal. Those were the days. I remember watching countdown and thinking huh this is what I rushed home for?
How much does RUclips shave off the quality as this sounds bloody lovely! Warm and rich, loads of little details and clarity. Never heard it like this before. What a score! Thanks for uploading!
We will miss public service broadcasting when it's gone, brought us gems like this theme and it's channel.
That’s a really good deck there. No discernible wow or flutter, nice and steady. Great stereo image.
Thanks its a Sansui XR-Q7 one of the first computer controlled systems from 1982

What is your faverite jingle? 🤔
Browsing the Internet was the only way I've ever heard about Channel 4, and by extension, this tune.
You'd love to actually see it.
THIS IS A GEM!
Managed to get a vinyl copy of this last year.. not easy to find.. pure luck
Listening to this on the day the privatisation of Channel 4 failed - 4th January 2023.
#savechannel4
Wonderful! Thanks for taking the time to do this.
Fantastic quality - Thank You!!
Have so many good memories of this piece between C4 shows and movies, especially when they'd show the Friday night Frankenstein and Dracula movies. All my immediate family together watching; goodies, crisps and soft drinks. Thanks for uploading this.
I remember when channel 4 was launched. I was 8 and remember seeing the testcard on the run-up to its launch. I think Countdown was the first program. I don't remember hearing this full tune before though.
This music was used in full in the opening montage programme "Welcome to Channel 4" which aired at 4.40pm on 2 November 1982, immediately before Countdown. See: ruclips.net/video/XLokvD0A4kM/видео.html
Also, in the early years, Channel 4 didnt advertise on thier own, they shared advertisements with ITV as well as ITV content, and this music can be heard in some continuity moments where advertisements weren't available
@@ItsRickysChannelSHORTS Channel 4 didn't get to show its own advertising until 1991 IIRC. The local ITV companies sold the slots, inserted the ads into the transmitter feed and passed on a proportion of the revenue to C4.
This masterpiece must have cost Channel 4 a fortune as the station weren't on air for most of the day as it was only broadcast in the afternoon, Remember the launch of the station well.
The first few days of C4 I remember there must have been a problem with advertising (at least in my region) and quite often when a programme went on break there would be a follows shortly holding slide and this music played up to the start of the next part.

Love it..!!! 👍
I’ve heard this but alongside the launch video on Channel 4. I had no idea it was released as a 7” single…
The next question is.. where am I going to find myself a copy?!?!
Thanks so much for posting. Wonderful to hear this stirring track as it was meant to be heard ❤
ebay, discogs, record shops, charity shops, basically anywhere that people are selling their vinyl...
(I got mine I think on ebay about 8 or 9 years ago)
Four notes which say "Da-vid Dundas".
I remember the cover of TVTimes. 4 logo in colour on black. I was 6
It has a certain production sound to it doesn’t it!
Any chance of recording the B Side - FourScore 2? I love that version.

My favourite is at 1:06
Please would you upload the other side too? It sounds like you have a much cleaner copy than the version already on RUclips. Thank you 😊
Absolutely love this piece of music. Out of interest, what is on the B side.
Hi Mark, this is: ruclips.net/video/2ueBOGPnr68/видео.html
Fourscore II, a synthesized version.
The best song Matt Berry didn't cover for his Television Themes album.
Guess we must be thankful for small mercies. 😉
who composed Fourscore?
David wrote the 4 notes. Rick Wentworth orchestrated it.
P.S. I was the engineer. John Mackswith.

I love the casual way you’ve just dropped that in to this thread.
