  • This keyboard is a safe bet for many people. It's also expensive and imperfect. This is a deep dive into the Logitech MX Mechanical keyboard, highlighting the features, reviewing what makes it unique, and discussing the problems that I've found. If you're thinking about buying the MX Mechanical, make sure you review each point so that you know just what you're getting. If it turns out this is the right keyboard for you, check out the links below to get yours:

The Logitech MX Mechanical is a low profile mechanical keyboard designed for productivity. It offers classic Logitech style with a two tone black and gray appearance. It features 2 height settings and is available in both 75% and full size. The keyboard is made from 47% recycled plastic and has ABS keycaps which are not my favorite as they catch finger oils easily. The switches are available in Linear, Tactile Quiet, and Clicky, and the keyboard has Multi-Device connectivity for 3 devices via Bluetooth in addition to the included Logi Bolt USB dongle. There is white backlighting that turns on automatically when hands approach and adjusts based on ambient light level. The Logitech Options+ software allows for customized mapping for function keys, application-specific key mapping, and more.
The Logitech MX Mechanical has a few drawbacks, including limited function keys and no option for RGB. It also requires more actuation force to press the keys, making it a very different typing experience than comparable keyboards. Additionally, it is wireless only, meaning it has no wired mode, which can be a problem if bluetooth does not work with your desk setup. Lastly, though Logitech's software is great, it may be blocked on company computers. Despite these minor issues, the Logitech MX Mechanical is a solid product for those who want to try out mechanical keyboards while enjoying easy connectivity and the benefits of the Logitech ecosystem.

Well, there you go, the most detailed and honest review of this keyboard that puts all important topics on the table. Once again Cameron, very well done! I love to hear that the bluetooth is the same on the mx mini, it is indeed so good that I can't tell it is not with a dongle. But it is sad to hear that the actuation force needed is so much higher than on the mx keys mini. I love this keyboard exactly because of the way I feel after typing on it 8 hours straight - nothing. I tried the mx mechanical in the store nearby and it really seemed oddly hard. I was wandering if this hard feeling would soften up after some time of use.

I was looking for a review of this specific keyboard of Logitech. I just watched your video and scrolled through the comments and someone said your channel is still small.
I seriously did not notice it. I thought I was watching a serious, big youtuber because the video is just perfect. I have never seen a video so good like this.
    Keep up the good work!

I really like the Logitech MX Mechanical. I just wish they made a palm rest for it.

This would be asking a lot of Logitech but a killer feature for their mx line of keyboards would be the addition of a digitally customizable function row. Imagine if the function row had buttons like a stream deck where the picture on the key could change. If battery was a concern they could have those keys use an e-ink screen instead. I own a an mx keys mini and my biggest gripe about it is the useless emoji/dictation keys and the lack of a forward/backwards media control. Another benefit of making those key caps digitally customizable, would be that using their software to customize the function buttons for specific programs would be infinitely more useful.

What do you think of this compared with the mx keys? I much prefer the look of the mechanical and the placement of its function keys but, oddly, found the mx keys easier to type on. I didn't really like the typing feel of the mechanical (I've only tried the tactile switches version), it felt like the keys had a LOT of travel on the mechanical somehow and I was more inclined to mistype on it. MX keys is a lot quieter too. I wondered which you preferred?

Great review! Logitech looks old school in a bad way at this point, when other keyboards rely on onboard memory and can change all the keys and switches, and some have layers and actual programmability with code executed inside the keyboard.
It's really weird to have function key functions still being a problem in the top of the line keyboard like they could've been in the 90s

I am programmer and a casual gamer, I recently bought the G502 lightspeed mouse and I have an old cheap mechanical keyboard, I'm sick of wires now, so do you consider the 100% version of this would be useful to work and casual gaming? O it would be better to go for the G915 TKL?

my MX Mechanical tends to sleep after a short amount of time, and needs to reconnect via bluetooth to my Mac - do you have this problem?

The emoji key is genius af.
On Mac you have to press 3 keys to open the emoji picker. And it's totally different on windows

Are you planning to do a keychron k3 pro review? Your channel is small so probably buying lots of keyboards isn't a priority to you, but right now there are barely any reviews of it online

I’d say it’s on a maybe list right now. I’m constantly trying to figure out the best bang for the buck purchases since the channel is small and I’ve got limited resources to dedicate to it. I’m gonna take a closer look at the K3 Pro now though since, if there’s a shortage in coverage, that’s an opportunity for me. 😄 Thanks for the call out!

    • @NJ-wb1cz
      @NJ-wb1cz Год назад

@@CameronDoughertyTech Yeah, on one hand, it doesn't have a lot of coverage, on the other - it didn't yet blow up like K3 did (maybe yet?) so not many people search for it... It's been out for couple of months but for some reason the bigger channels have been ignoring it, and there's not a single comparison between it and Logitech atm
It basically fixes most of your problems with K3 with full VIA support (so the pesky lighting key can be easily changed along with all other ones) and PBT caps with standard stabilizers, except (kind of) for the default 10 minute bluetooth delay which can be changed to some other one only by compiling QMK which isn't a very user friendly way, even though they provide the instructions (at least, I haven't found another way like a shortcut accessible in VIA)

The only keyboard that I found that can even compete with MX Mechanical Mini is the KeyChron K3 v2 (the K3 Pro is a regression), though its battery life doesn't even approach the Mini.

MX keys is trailing K3 Pro and Nuphy by few inches. That, plus Logitech starting to operate in Ecosystem mode like Apple puts it even further behind.

Never doing logitech again. I have had 3 MX boards, the 780 and 2 0f the MX mechanical all fail with in a week.
My first 780 I loved, but the keys wore out after some time. The second one I bought had the top keys start failing and their cheap clip on keys. So I went to best buy and bought the MX mechanical mini for mac. The command key sticks now after day 3 of having it. Returning it, and just getting rid of my logi devices - donating them to people who need them.
Logi has just let me down so much lately. They have SERIOUS quality issues. I burned 300 bucks, and overall, I regret it.
I love the layout, the keys, and the feel, but their key quality has been terrible.
Then I heard you say Keychron, and all I can think of is the one I had which had a bad USBC slot. It lasted about 6 months, so I have just avoided keychron as well.
I do have the moonlander and love it, but I need another runner that is more standard. I have yet to find a solid quality in a lot of the 'premium' boards.

lol what are you doing to your keyboard man? I've found they don't work so well once you get dried jizz in between the keys and sometimes they get gunked up with spicy cheetos but otherwise they have been very reliable for me
