- Experience the unique and rare world of お座敷遊び Ozashiki Asobi (traditional Japanese parlor games) with maiko and geiko at Takegawara Onsen in Beppu. In celebration of Beppu City's 100th anniversary, these maiko/geiko offered free demonstrations over four weekends (April 21, 28, and May 19, 26 in 2024) in the community space on the second floor of Takegawara Onsen.
Normally, these games involve drinking alcohol, making them even more challenging and entertaining. I hope this video gives you a glimpse into this traditional cultural experience, which even many Japanese people have never tried.
The performers, Madoka-san and Hisano-san, are a mother-daughter duo who honed their skills at Awara Onsen in Fukui Prefecture for three years before moving to Beppu Onsen. They are dedicated to making the traditionally exclusive art of geiko performances more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
