I live in Japan grew up in Japan. Any adult that doesn't know about the geisha is stupid. It's even mentioned in the school textbook if I remember correctly.
He was the same age as me, it really hits home when someone is young like that. Rest in peace and thank you to him for the wonderful work he did on this video and others.
@@shaikm5151 geishas were sometimes known as performers, entertainers, and at times were seen as sexual objects or beings. some only performed or entertained by music, dancing, art, etc, but some others sold or were sold for their body especially their virginity. some geishas were highly respected, but some were not. being a performer or entertainer was not always looked at very highly by some people in the noble classes. lots of them got a lot of admiration but not a lot of respect.
Thank you Hao Tang for your service. He was taken too soon but he left an impact on his co-workers, family, friends and even us, the viewers. I hope his spirit is in peace.

My condolences to Hao Tangs family, 29 was so very young to meet his ancestors. The Geisha tradition is so elegant and graceful. The ladies are highly cultured and beautiful to gaze upon. I can't imagine how hard it is to learn and perfect the skills needed. Kudos to them all for upholding the tradition and values in Japanese culture.

I started tearing up that a bunch of their guests gathered up money so none of the Geisha would have to quit.... Its heartwarming to know how much love there is out in the world.
This is so calming to watch honestly. Everything from the music, to the tea, to the clothing and make-up is truly amazing. I sadly don't speak Japanese nor do I live in Japan but I would honestly love to see more people part of this type of culture.
They learn singing, musical instrument, and tea ceremony everyday. And their postures when they sit. They are more refine in every aspect. I admire their perseverance

@@nathanielmills4678 there’s several tutorials from Maiko/Geiko on how to do it online, it’s not really for the appeal of mystery, during the era it was created, teahouses were dimly lit so they painted their faces to illuminate them

I've always been so enamored with geisha/maiko. They have unmatched beauty and grace and I just love seeing them in their element as living masterpieces of craft and tradition!
Oh this was absolutely enlightening!! I’ve learned as much as I can about Geisha Culture as possible from outside Japan, this is the first time I’ve seen any Ozashiki patrons/guests interviewed on their continued interest in more Ozashiki and it’s wholesome. I’m also beyond thrilled that fan clubs stepped in to ensure Geiko and Maiko wouldn’t have to quit during this pandemic. This was all around a wonderful video

I've always been engrossed by the geiko and maiko of Kyoto, but just a month or two ago I came across Tokyo geisha, and they're just as beautiful. I love how beautifully diverse the geisha culture is in Japan. Thanks for the video Boss 👏
Yes and each enclave in the Tokyo hanamachi has slightly different visual traditions as well. In Asakusa & Shimbashi they require their apprentices (called hangyoku) to wear wigs, while in Mukojima, Kagurazaka, and Akasaka they allow their apprentices to have their own hair styled similar to Kyoto maiko. In Nara the last 2 maiko appear very much like Kyoto maiko do with the long trailing kimono hems and natural hair. Their visual traditions are slightly different though.
Red lipstick was also a popular in early black and white, silent movies in Hollywood. Red lipstick would contrast nicely in black/white movies and the lip movements could be clearly seen.

I just want to say thank you so much for this glimpse into an okiya!! I’ve been into geisha since I first read “Memoirs of a Geisha” in high school about 11 years ago and at the time, I was unable to find very much to help teach me about what they really do. This is my first time really getting to see the reality of being a geisha in modern times and I am so excited and grateful!!! :)

@@johnmarston5600 Isn’t that like most college based professions nowadays? 20 somethings going into a program because of peer, family and financial pressure rather than what they’re really want. And even if they want something nowadays they aren’t even sure if that’s what they want anyways so they end up studying for a job they might come to love or hate in the future?
@@johnmarston5600 Absolutely nobody pushes girls to become maiko/geiko/geisha. Many of them actually became maiko against their family's will (because you have to forgo highschool). If anything most people just want their daughters to go to college or marry and have children.

Rest in peace, Hao Tang. This is my first time watching Asian Boss and I am so honored to have this video as the first video to watch from this channel. Although I am not a long-time watcher, I can tell from the heartfelt words and dedication photos, and videos that he was a treasure to the team and he will be greatly missed. On the other hand, I am so intrigued by the amount of information that this video presented about Geisha. I always thought that Geisha was a very well-known part of Japanese culture, so I was surprised when they asked Teruha about her parents' response to her career and that they didn't know who Geisha were and what they did. Additionally, I am so glad that they went over the difference between Oiran and Geisha, as I thought that they were the same but clearly, they are not. It's unfortunate that Geisha have a negative view due to media and such, but I am so glad that the culture is still being practiced and that there is still major support from the Japanese community. I fully support the Geisha who are still passionate about the culture and practicing the culture even though times have been difficult due to COVID and other factors. @@TheP0lix Yes. Geisha from different cities and enclaves have different visual traditions and performances. You can look at a Kyoto geisha apprentice (maiko), and compare her to a Tokyo apprentice (hangyoku) and identify that they are from different cities. You can look at a Kyoto geiko, and then look at a Hachioji geisha and see the subtle differences in the way they speak, dance, and wear their attire. there is more but it gets a bit more extensive.

My condolences to Hao Tangs family, 29 was so very young to meet his ancestors. The Geisha tradition is so elegant and graceful. The ladies are highly cultured and beautiful to gaze upon. I started tearing up that a bunch of their guests gathered up money so none of the Geisha would have to quit.... Its heartwarming to know how much love there is out in the world.
This is so calming to watch honestly. Everything from the music, to the tea, to the clothing and make-up is truly amazing. I sadly don't speak Japanese nor do I live in Japan but I would honestly love to see more people part of this type of culture.

Oh this was absolutely enlightening!! I’ve learned as much as I can about Geisha Culture as possible from outside Japan, this is the first time I’ve seen any Ozashiki patrons/guests interviewed on their continued interest in more Ozashiki and it’s wholesome. I’m also beyond thrilled that fan clubs stepped in to ensure Geiko and Maiko wouldn’t have to quit during this pandemic. This was all around a wonderful video

I've always been engrossed by the geiko and maiko of Kyoto, but just a month or two ago I came across Tokyo geisha, and they're just as beautiful. I love how beautifully diverse the geisha culture is in Japan. Thanks for the video Boss 👏
Yes and each enclave in the Tokyo hanamachi has slightly different visual traditions as well. In Asakusa & Shimbashi they require their apprentices (called hangyoku) to wear wigs, while in Mukojima, Kagurazaka, and Akasaka they allow their apprentices to have their own hair styled similar to Kyoto maiko. In Nara the last 2 maiko appear very much like Kyoto maiko do with the long trailing kimono hems and natural hair. Their visual traditions are slightly different though.

I just want to say thank you so much for this glimpse into an okiya!! I’ve been into geisha since I first read “Memoirs of a Geisha” in high school about 11 years ago and at the time, I was unable to find very much to help teach me about what they really do. And even if they want something nowadays they aren’t even sure if that’s what they want anyways so they end up studying for a job they might come to love or hate in the future?
@@johnmarston5600 Absolutely nobody pushes girls to become maiko/geiko/geisha. Many of them actually became maiko against their family's will (because you have to forgo highschool). If anything most people just want their daughters to go to college or marry and have children.

Rest in peace, Hao Tang. This is my first time watching Asian Boss and I am so honored to have this video as the first video to watch from this channel. Although I am not a long-time watcher, I can tell from the heartfelt words and dedication photos, and videos that he was a treasure to the team and he will be greatly missed.
On the other hand, I am so intrigued by the amount of information that this video presented about Geisha. I always thought that Geisha was a very well-known part of Japanese culture, so I was surprised when they asked Teruha about her parents' response to her career and that they didn't know who Geisha were and what they did. Additionally, I am so glad that they went over the difference between Oiran and Geisha, as I thought that they were the same but clearly, they are not. It's unfortunate that Geisha have a negative view due to media and such, but I am so glad that the culture is still being practiced and that there is still major support from the Japanese community. I fully support the Geisha who are still passionate about the culture and practicing the culture even though times have been difficult due to COVID and other factors. Much love to the Geisha and to this channel for sharing this wonderful information with the world 💖

Geisha from different cities and enclaves have different visual traditions and performances. You can look at a Kyoto geisha apprentice (maiko), and compare her to a Tokyo apprentice (hangyoku) and identify that they are from different cities. You can look at a Kyoto geiko, and then look at a Hachioji geisha and see the subtle differences in the way they speak, dance, and wear their attire. there is more but it gets a bit more extensive.
