    Thanks for being such an informative/entertaining ballet personality. There really isn't much ballet content on the internet, so your videos are always well appreciated.

    i have totally done everything on your list when i was dancing lol. the saddest thing is that a lot of teachers and ballet parents encourage these behaviors and it just continues this vicious cycle of negativity. ballet the art is beautiful, but the community has a lot of vile, nasty people who bitter because of how they were brought up in the dance world so they take their frustrations out on young dancers. the ballet community needs to undergo a serious change, and if people make videos or write articles that offer valid criticisms like yours did i'm sure there would be a positive effect. hopefully things have changed more than i think they did, since i've been out of the professional dance world for about 6 years and i haven't set a foot into a professional dance setting since i was 16. thank you for making this video and i hope you make more like this.

    Love what you said about education. Tons of girls I danced with as far back as middle school would drop out and be homeschooled so they could "focus on dance"

      Ciara1211 I know this isn't a great example but Abby from dance moms always pushed her kids to be homeschooled

    I agree with lots of those points.
    I guess it's easy as dancers to get caught up in their own life to the point where they are very self-centered and cannot relate to any "normal" people's problems anymore..
    But I love when dancers form this loving understanding dance community together, that special bond between dancers is so unique :)
    Thank you for sharing xx :D

    Hahaha, I love this! Some of your comments reminded me of an experience I had last year as a supernumerary for a professional company. At our first rehearsal with the company we overheard one dancer ask another, "Who are all these people?" When the other said, "Supers," the first dancer responded, "Ugh!" The funny part is that most of the experienced dancers were SO kind; it was largely the trainees and second company dancers who found us annoying. Granted there are always supers who show up for rehearsals in pink tights and leotards being total bunhead wannabes, but still, by us standing in the background wearing 30-pound dresses and frilly wigs it meant that some of the younger dancers didn't have to be relegated to being human scenery and instead had the opportunities to dance! Love your channel!

    I was The Swan Queen in "Swan Lake" this year (I still have 2 more performances, tomorrow and Tuesday). And it simply drove me up the wall when people were clapping at half the steps I did. Especially when it was hard for me to hear the music they were clapping THAT LOUDLY.I HAVE I entered as Odile into the Ballroom scene, and the audience started erupting in applause and I was like "People, now is not the time to clap, wait until the Pas De Deux ". This one guy (Couldn't see him because of the lighting) kept initiating it. And I was like "You really should just WAIT until the dances end, or until the Act ends". But it really depends on the crowd, for a couple of performances, the audience clapped at what should've been clapped at. But at some, they were clapping at everything. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the applause and recognition, but there is a time for it.

  • @PLAleksandra
    @PLAleksandra 7 лет назад +5

    Fair points, I couldn’t agree more with you! What annoys me the most - dancers who after seeing your performance start with pointing out mistake and/or giving advises instead of just acknowledging someone’s effort and craft. I feel like that strive for perfection in dancers mind make their life’s and life’s of others miserable. It is not always about technique and being flawless. This constant focusing on area for improvements drives me crazy. Dancers forget to complement each other instead of criticising. I wish some of dancers just relax and enjoy the feeling of dancing.

    I'm not a dancer now, though I danced through my first year in college, but now play cello and played classical guitar. This vlog had some very true point. It also made me laugh because musicians act in some the same ways as ballet dancers. Love your videos! Thanks

    • @laurabelford2589
      @laurabelford2589 6 лет назад

      haha... I was just going to say there is a parallel list for classical musicians.
      I study violin and I aways felt that ballet training is the only thing from "the outside" that I could relate to the music training, because the level of sacrifice and dedication, and for that reason I aways felt sympathy for it, dancers inspire me a lot in music, in their physical musicality and sensitivity to tempos . But I guess the negative attitudes are also shared.

    I am definitely one of those people that talk bad about other sports😂😂 I am still a student but having a brother that plays soccer as intensely I dance, I tend to get competitive with him and say that what he does is "nothing compared to ballet"...but what you said honestly made me reconsider my actions because you're totally right!!

  • @gaiak3178
    @gaiak3178 5 лет назад +2

    your second point is so true. I do gymnastics and I have nothing against ballet, but some of my dancer friends will go out of their way to tell me that dance is so much harder and you need to be way more skilled for it than you do in gymnastics. the sport you do has nothing to do with how talented you are, its just how talented your are at the sport.

    Your 'Dancer Ethics' should be turned into a mini curriculum; the Pro-dancer version of 'if I'd only known then what I know now'. Very important observations for social success in any artistic field. They promote self awareness (the good kind) and would certainly help performers become more well rounded as they embark on a professional career. Well done!

    Oh boy do I agree with your fourth point about excessive self critique! I believe this is quite common in the whole western society, but it is also apparent in the Instagram #adultballet-community. Every post picturing a person doing something they love includes a caption saying things like "I know my turnout is not perfect, toes are not pointed enough and I didn't pull up as much as I should". It is all and good to recognize the things you might need to work on, but 1) living a life where you are more proud and excited about what you can do and have learned is way nicer than a life full of constantly nitpicking your actions and 2) it really reinforces the phenomenon you talked about and 3) nobody expects an adult ballet dancer to perfect their body in the way professional dancers have done in decades of intensive training.

  • @abitgaytbh4463
    @abitgaytbh4463 7 лет назад +19

    I don't like a lot of dancers because they struggle to realise how privileged they are. Anybody can be a ballerina if they started young enough. I was desperate to be a ballerina since I was three, but my parents simply couldn't afford to pay for it. It killed my mom because she knew how much I wanted it, but we could barely hold onto our house. I appreciate how hard dance is and how much dedication it takes, but I think dancers need a reality check and to realise that without parental/financial support they wouldn't be a dancer at all.

  • @h.v.1114

    I started ballet as a hobby when I was 31 (3 years ago) and annoying things people call out me doing are; when I wait in line or where ever, I always practice my fifth position and posture. I dance, everywhere. Getting a bottle from high shelf? Reléve practice. Picking up a thing I dropped? Glissé or... You get the point. If I'm stationary, it means stretching. Movie nights with girls and I'm the one who has her feet up stretching the back of my leg and trying to get it a bit more open at the same time... Picking up EVERYTHING with my toes at home. Handing things out with my toes. I don't know are these some dancer cliches but I laugh to myself that yeah, I can be annoying. :D

    Thank you for pointing out that being able to continue ballet as a profession as an adult is a privilege. If one of those dancers got an illness or injury that prevented them from dancing 8 hours a day, they'd realize it takes more than just passion to make ballet a career.

    I've belonged to many activities and clubs, and I've done many things before, and this is all just human nature I guess. I've seen the dumbest cliques argue over dumb stuff. Ballet vs. Contemporary ragging on each other over technique or history, musical theater vs. classic drama actors invalidating each others' style of their craft, cooks not talking about anything BUT food and techniques, tech folk talking tech a mile a minute and then mocking anyone who had an opposite opinions on specifics... It's ridiculous but it's a very human thing to do. Getting into something to the point of self-absorption lol. I think there's a lot of self-awareness thst comes with age, but not always at the same age lol.

During the last Olympics, there would be times I would catch myself thinking 'I could do those dance steps just like them' but then I remind myself that they are in the Olympics and I am not, and there are times I just want to remind everyone of that! Also this is the first video I have seen of yours and I subscribed right away!

    love your videos! The focus on self to the detriment of relationships is a problem for all of us. I live one of those "normal" lives you referred to (i grew up dancing in a studio but was never going pro) and I really usually want to stay to myself. It is really easy to decide I have too much to get done at home to make plans with others when the friends just want time with a friend. When i was in my 20s and first getting into the "real world" i had a larger group of people to spend time with and noticed the middle aged people didn't socialize nearly as much. Now I know why!

I admit I don't like her very much cause I can feel it, that she always seems to look down on me and my other roommates, I think mostly because of our 'normal figure'.
