    OMG I cannot even EXPLAIN how frustrating it is when people underestimate how smart and quick your mind has to be in order to pick up the combinations, stay in line, stay with the music, have the right arms, and more ALL on top of trying to look good!! This whole video was super relatable thank you!😊❤

    strange that people who choose a career in classical dance get so much criticism. In Japan classic arts are treated with respect.

    I happened upon this video randomly but I am an actor and so many of these are true for us too! People ask me if I'm famous all the time. Not even close, lol! I also have people talk down to me constantly and ask me when I'll get a "real" job. So frustrating. I think many people in arts professions experience this lack of respect for what we do. it's like the people who talk down to us don't realize that the people providing them with the movies and plays and concerts and dance performances they enjoy are actually humans too. Thanks for sharing your experience!

    if you're not a ballet dancer, i recommend seeing First Position. That was the movie that really opened my eyes to how difficult ballet is. That was before i started ballet, of course. Now i get to feel all the lovely pain i heard all of those dancers talking about in First Position.

    That last point is so important! I started in ballet when I was 4 and I still dance today but I am more committed to pursuing a professional career in circus and my apparatus is trampoline. I come from a family of doctors and scientists and many people act like I'm throwing away the genius brain that I inherited by dedicating myself to acrobatics. What they don't understand though is that I remember every bit of choreography I've ever been taught. They don't understand that my brain and my body are as in-sync as humanly possible. They don't get that when I'm in the air on the trampoline and I realize that my flip or twist is just a tiny bit over-rotated, I have less than a second to consider 5 different landing options (back drop, pencil drop, hands and knees drop, front drop or feet), choose the safest one, and get in position to land that way (which can vary between just getting my body into the right position, twisting completely in another direction, untucking early to stop my rotation or tucking to gain more rotation) and I do it every time. I also work drills in which my instructor may call out a trick either moments before I hit the bed of the trampoline (for twisting-related tricks) or while I am in the apex of a jump (for flip and drop-related tricks) and I have to act the exact moment that the words leave their mouth. Performing in dance and in acrobatics is the epitome of quick thinking! The sheer amount of choreography memorized takes serious brain power!

    This was so interesting!! I'm a classical musician, and we deal with our own barrage of pre-conceptions and people making comments (asking things like if we have a 'real job', it must be nice to just be 'playing' all of the time, do we have enough money to eat etc...) Thanks for sharing!

    • @TheConfidentDancer
      @TheConfidentDancer  7 лет назад

      I'm so glad it resonated with you! I'm sure most artists feel the exact same way. People often take for granted how much the arts enrich their day-to-day lives, so they naturally under-appreciate the people who create the things like music, images, designs, and videos that they regularly enjoy.

    I can relate so much! Specially on the food topic, I'm a type of person that stays skinny even if I eat a ton of food and Macdonalds I will stay the same weight and one day a family member told me " Wow youre super skinny, you should eat! I don't know what they tell you in your ballet planet but you should eat !" I was like woah man I do eat ! BALLET DANCERS DO EAT we do not prevent ourselves to eat just to stay skinny because it is what it takes to be a dancer, no ( and tbh that is so much stereotypical to say all ballet dancers should be skinny like wth)

    I am really impressed by your honest speech. everyone that talks you down should wear a pair of pointe shoes and let them only try to stand for a tiny moment on point....That might cure them. I always wished I was a Dancer, but my life just took another direction. so at the age of 51 - though fit and pretty pliable - I am taking beginners classes, that teaches respect for your profession.....Go on like this👍👍👍👍

    my first and last initials are e.d. in 6th grade art class, we had to incorporate something that we love with our initials. so naturally, I drew the letters e and d inside of a pointe shoe. I showed it to my art teacher and she made me change it because she said e.d. might interpret to stand for eating disorder because it was in a ballet shoe. all in all, she made me start over and put my full intials which are e.p.d.

    The last point was great and just the tip of the iceberg... much more detail could be touched upon for the individual who believes dancers aren't bright or believes an intelligent person shouldn't "waste" it on dancing. Would love to see them participate in a ballet class, professional audition or rehearsal or creative process... then let's have a chat.

    I came across this video by accident when I was looking for a video that gives the reasons why others like the ballet.
    But nevertheless I found this video very interesting that’s presented by a young lady who is quite delightful and beautiful like Margot Fonteyn.
    I am at the early stages of being an appreciator of the ballet and I have the preference for Swan Lake and the Nutcracker which is so lovely to me that I can watch it over and over again by various companies, although I have my favourites.
    The music, the sets, and the dancing and the costumes are so beautiful.
    I do believe that a good dancer needs to be a light hearted person. I find the ballet very lifting. Also I find that the ballet is terribly supportive and encouraging mostly happening unwittingly to the astute observing audience, who are free of those impediments which might impede their capacity to appreciate all that this great art has to offer.
    The ballet should be for everyone but alas many will be denied its pleasure, as I once was, for the beauty they are yet to see is being denied them as they have to view life through a distorted lens.
    Mores the pity.
    It is for the refined.
    Those who appreciate it are the cream of the crop. The cream of society.

    Glad you brought up the eating topic. As a male ballet dancer, it is so frustrating to hear ignorant comments about what I eat or how much I eat or even things such as I can eat more because I'll just burn it off. I wonder, do pro athletes hear such comments? I would think not because their body and what they do in life must be so fine tuned... dancers are the same. We must be in our optimal conditions to do what we do... for the same amount of time as a pro athlete if not longer actually.

    Although I'm not a dancer and never danced at all in my life (though I think Ballet is wonderful😊), I could relate so much, regarding my own job.
    I work in the publishing industry and people are all the time surprised that it actually is a pretty hard job sometimes! Of course, it's not rocket science nor brain surgery, but you do have to know your stuff too and it can be super stressful because there are deadlines all the time. I feel like people tend to consider jobs having to do with subjects that are not as "important" as food and health and daily objects everyone uses on a super regular basis more easy than others.
    I try not to, but I sometimes get offended if people are truly surprised that I work long hours every day and say "but why, it's just books?! Can't be that hard, can it??" Er, yes it can. I imagine, it's kind of similar with dancing (or other art forms), right? ☺

    I think a lot could be said for different professions and non as well. (working moms vs. stay-at-home comes to mind.) I, for one, am fascinated with dancers! Not one myself, but if I knew you, I'd be in awe and asking you all sorts of questions.
    Anyway, I'd love to see a post about dancers aches and pains, etc. Or what it feels like to be on pointe. (how the feet feel too) I've heard dancers are always in pain, and I wonder if that is just while they're dancing or even when not. Does the pain carry over into later life as well? I hope this makes sense, as I've always wondered about that. And how you mentally work through that pain. (I work out, but when I'm in pain, I listen to my body, and take time off. -- NOT saying you should be doing that, rather, when I'M in pain, working out is the last thing on my mind, even though I want to.) Hope that makes sense! Thanks!

      @EsotericTherapy 7 лет назад +2

      Have you seen the new show Flesh and Bone? Makes ballet companies look really nasty. Almost every character is a total asshole. I was hoping it would be more balanced than Black Swan and show some positive attitudes and behaviour.
      www.bustle.com/articles/122045-how-accurate-is-flesh-and-bone-to-the-ballet-world-its-realism-may-surprise-you

    • @maybewise
      @maybewise 7 лет назад +3

      +Cessily Well, it was about a struggling company, and going through serious transitions. It would make sense that people were stressed. I don't think that the goal was to represent for all ballet companies, and ballerinas, but to tell of a specific tragedy.

    • @EsotericTherapy
      @EsotericTherapy 7 лет назад +2

      Yes, of course one story doesn't represent everything or everyone it encapsulates, but I'm saying that it adds to a negative view of the ballet world that is already out there (as evidence by the article I linked to - a lot of people already think, and I quote: "there's often such a dark world behind the beautiful costumes and the images of women smiling..."). And the characters were not portrayed as just stressed. They were often unprofessional and largely had awful personality traits.

    • @maybewise
      @maybewise 7 лет назад +5

      +Cessily I summed up their being unprofessional, and having unsavory personalities, as products of stress. Of course there were a few petty characters, that didn't seem to have anything to be stressed about. But they weren't the focus. It was the girl escaping a twisted home environment, with little more than the clothes on her back, the woman with a drug problem, who's desperately trying to hold onto her ending career, the girl with a deadly disease, and the people struggling to keep the company afloat, and their pride intact. Being involved in ballet is only portrayed as PART of their issues; not the root of all evil.
      It's a drama/tragedy. Not a reality show, or comedy. Of course the main focuses are gonna be the hot messes, who are more likely to meet tragic ends. But if it makes you feel any better, you can imagine everyone besides them, being tight-knit, normal friends. But that wasn't the artistic direction production wanted to go. I know it must suck for ballerinas who want a different kind of representation, but it is what it is.
      Anyone can complain about film portraying their professions a certain way. Like construction workers portrayed as perverts, or lawyers portrayed as cold-hearted bullies, who don't actually care about the truth. And they're portrayed that way in the media, way more than ballerinas being depressed, with eating disorders are. There's like only Black Swan, and Flesh and Bone (and this short-lived reality show called "On Pointe"). Want to change the perception?... Make your own movie/show. The perception's already changing with ballerina vloggers, like this, and Teen Vogue doing multiple series' on ballet, that makes it look fun.

    • @EsotericTherapy
      @EsotericTherapy 7 лет назад +1

      A happy medium between "fun" and f**ked-up would be nice. Drama is fine, but realistically grounded in a more balanced or pragmatic view of the ballet world.

    I enjoy your vids. Perhaps some of the "ignorance" about ballet and ballet dancers is because many people have never attended a performance and don't know anyone who is a professional dancer. They believe what's in films or TV, or rumors, etc. Like dancers starve themselves and exist on cocaine, coffee and cigarettes. lol I know that this isn't true, but many still believe it is. Or that all male dancers are gay. Do you know what I mean? The assumption that you're famous is sweet and funny! HAAHA, I thought "troupe" was for circus performers! I love what you said about people who don't understand what you do, and they don't want to understand. Most professional dancers are elite athletes, imho. It takes immense mental and physical strength, it's truly amazing. Well, this comment is already WAY too long, so thanks, Happy Thanksgiving, and kisses to Alice. :D

    A little note on possibility: the sweet spot between hardcore and unattainable.
    I've always had the view of ballet as being hardcore, and it has been a surprise to me to learn that not everyone holds this view. Some of the things you went over in this video (thinking that ballet is not intelligent or difficult, or that it's infantile etc) is just insane to me. People believing that Natalie Portman could dance en pointe (of course it was her body double doing that) after just 1.5 years as an adult learner, also insane.
    I've actually had to learn that ballet is not as impossible as I thought it was. I thought that adults with no prior experience couldn't even take up ballet lessons (which I found quite sad, because I find the art/craft/discipline of ballet to be so admirable and beautiful) and have only recently discovered that that just isn't true: there are adult beginners, some of whom even make it onto pointe after a number of years. Amazing. The world just opened up for me in a way (at a stage of my life when many things seem to be closing down).

    ballet is probably the most masculine of things. for example- the balance between very masculine and very feminine choreography in a pas de deux is beautiful.

      You have to be able to achieve more than a split on the ground, then you will be able to do it in the air :)

    Have you ever wanted to give ballet up or had struggles with it? I was in a professional training program for 4 years and I have recently moved on from it because of mental illness and being unhealthy for so long... All I ever wanted was to be a ballerina but now I don't want it at all and I've had that thought in the back of my head for a long time now aswell:... Is that okay that I'm starting a new journey when ballet has been my life for such a long time!!??? Help :) xx

      Amy Talbot I'm in the same boat! I just recently walked away from pursuing a career in ballet due to my health and battle with mental illness. Walking away from ballet is what I needed to do in order to get to a healthy place, although I do miss it so much and am still sad that I lost it.

    I want to start ballet but I'm kinda embarrassed about telling my parents or anyone they will say it's for girly girls but I can trust my best friend but my mum said it might be too late but after that I haven't said anything I'm a bit embarrassed but I do love ballet

      It's never too late to start dance classes. I know lots of people start ballet really early and you might have younger girls thrown into the classes, but it's never too late for you to start dancing. :) Also, ballet is a very athletic and taxing thing to do, so it's not really entirely girly. I hope everything works out between you and your parents.

      One thing is ballet can be expensive sometimes! Also DO NOT use cups on your feet for pointe shoes! Just saying. If you want to start it, just slowly and express your interest by maybe dancing around the house or try to have her catch you watching ballet videos a lot. Just slowly express your interest by your actions and not by your words. When you think she is starting to notice your interest just wait for the right time and ask. This may take 1 or 2 months. You aren’t going to start of en pointe. You have years to go before that. You have to start off with your basic positions and gaining strength in your ankles. It will take time an sometimes you might not want to do it. But if you quit just because you are to bored or tired of it for one day, you’re going to regret it trust me. Just keep going! Hope this helped! Also gear is very expensive too! Good luck!

So I was the valedictorian in my graduating class and everyone told me like see you in college have fun at Harvard and becoming like a world famous scientist, and I just say no that's not what i want to do. I'm going to dance and they're all like oh interesting, like wouldn't you rather go to college and be a scientist or like my dad said he liked my idea of scientist or you should have a back up plan and I just wish people understood that we're not stupid competitive starving little girls but we're hard working people.

      Thank you! I totally agree with you. I even feel like there are times when I accidentally speak of being girly in a negative way because I want to distance myself from the image of weakness that is associated with being a girl. That makes me even more sad because I want women to feel empowered no matter what their personality is! I'm very sorry if I came across that way in the video.

    I believe that ballet is good for the body. ALTHOUGH I would never do it myself. I see it as a more of a feminine art, because all my life I have associated it with women. I also think that the whole dancing on stage to tell a story is weird.
    I see that the training and practice is very rewarding when accomplished. But it would be hard to convince me to do ballet and perform on stage.

    this video would have been way more interesting if you would have shortened it and talked about every thing for 2 minutes, bce it just gets repetitive and boring. i do understand that you don't have so much time to put all of yourself in these videos, since you're a ballet dancer, and fully understand it since im a dancer myself( though I'm not a professional, but still I've worked with and dance with few ballerinas). But it seriously would help your content and bring you more subscribers if you made your videos short, quick and clear.
    I truly respect what you're doing and i could only wish to achieve something in the future with ballet. You're seriously amazing.

      Aiste Norkute Thank you, I really do appreciate he feedback! I agree with you. I honestly think my discipline has been slipping a bit with my content since I've had less time to focus on it recently. Again, thanks for your feedback and support!

    Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the evil in this world, God is full of justice, mercy and love.
    Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans
    . The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom.
    If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us into His image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. We cannot purify ourselves, but Christ lived that perfect sinless, pure life and then allotted it to our "account".
    That's where our righteousness comes from. Not from any good, works that you or I could do.
    It is not based on the amount of good works we do. God starts the changes, He carries it on, and He completes it in those who let Him.
    It's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him, again, through His power and instruction).
    He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if YOU had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place.
    He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, forgiveness, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it.
    He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way.
    NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER
    If you have any questions let me know xx

    Stop right now ! Stop making ballet "easier to understand for dummies", coz no need to make things easier than they are, ever.
    Ballet must be a Mystery, a personal discovery as a part of Your life. If it's not happend in your entire life ---- pass aside, it's not yours...
    For me, I'm not a bit of any kind of dancer, - for me Ballet is a Mystery which origins I still can't explain entirely. Almost nude women, explicit moves, few clothes ? Yes, but not core thing, something at the edge and fainting away when I get to the core, which is a Dance itself, a Talk going through body, originally programmed to very tight moves... I do not know. Definitely it's not a sexual thing. It's about me, a human of feelings, but not specially of sex or something like that (which is downgrade of feelings). Rather it's about All, above all... And it's breathtaking.
    A Mystery behind glass. Let it be there, don't touch it, if you do it'll break apart and melt away in your hands...
    (any kind of backstage in ballet is evil)

    EXCUSE ME?! I AM SO TIRED OF THINGS LIKE THIS. OK, SO YOU ARE TIRED OF PEOPLE MAKING FUN OF BALLET. THERE ARE MUCH WORSE THINGS IN THE WORLD. I HAVE ADHD, ANXIETY, OCD, DYSGRAPHIA, AND TOURETTE SYNDROME, AND HERE YOU ARE BASICALLY TALKING ABOUT HOW AWFUL YOUR LIFE IS BECAUSE YOUR TIRED OF ALL THIS INACCURATE TALK ABOUT BALLET?! THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT THERE WITH ADHD, BEING TOLD TO PAY ATTENTION, AND CALM DOWN! THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT THERE WITH ANXIETY, WHO ARE BEING TOLD TO STOP WORRYING, WITH ALL OF THESE FEELINGS, AND PROBLEMS WITH THE WORLD, JUST FALLING ONTO YOUR BACK AS IF YOUR DESTINED TO BE SOME HERO, BUT YOU KEEP FALLING DOWN AND DOWN, UNTIL YOU FEEL LIKE EVERYONE WILL HATE YOU. AND YOU CANT CONTROL IT. YOU HAVNT FELT LIKE THIS BEFORE. YOU HAVNT BEEN ABLE TO ACTUALLY FEEL DESPAIR. TO FEEL LIKE EVERYONE HATES YOU. YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO EVEN HAVE POSTED THIS VIDEO. YOU ARE A TERRIBLE PERSON.

    • @TheConfidentDancer
      @TheConfidentDancer  7 лет назад +6

      Of course there are worse things in the world, and those issues you brought up are certainly terrible! I am sorry you felt that this video belittled those problems, but it is quite clear that there were absolutely no comparisons made between ballet being misunderstood and living with a disorder. This is primarily because that is totally irrelevant from the subject matter of this video, but also because there is so comparison. I never suggested that people misunderstanding ballet is higher up than anything in a hierarchy of problems that exist in the world. I believe I made it quite clear that this was just a light hearted discussion and that I do not pity myself in any way just because I occasionally receive belittling comments about my profession. I also want to remind you that you do not know me, therefore, you cannot make assumptions about what hardships I have experienced. It is clear that this tone of video touched a nerve for you, and I am sorry for that. Just know that this was not at all the intention and to believe so is to misconstrue the truth.
